I finished it which already makes it worth watching because I am very eager to drop something.

It has been a while so my memory is a bit foggy. There is mech but not that much. The end is not that good and the story overall is shitty but the epilogue is nice, which almost makes me wish the anime started there and just skipped all the trash. But the characters aren't too bad. And I really mean it.

Explain to me then why after 13 years, Mai Hime is still the franchise that produced the hgihest amount of yuri fanfictions? It's so mindbloggingly popular that 95-98% of all Mai-Hime fics in existence are ShizNat, something that no other big series can claim (Nanoha still got paired at least of the time with Yuuno instead of Fate). Shizuru is the most popular character of Mai-Hime of all time, Natsuki is the second protagonist of Mai-Hime, and their romance has the combination of 1) canon 2) complex plot 3) good end - something we have yet to witness again after 13 fucking years.

Shizuru is also one of the only two anime girls in existence who raped a girl and still won. Find me another winner like that.

Hell no. The "good end" that comes about is a serious contender for the worst anime ending of all time and is possibly the biggest asspull of that generation. A death game's plot can only be so complex. And unless I'm misremembering how it went down (been years since I saw it), the way the victim goes from wanting her to stay as far away from her as possible to mutually in love really annoys the hell out of me. It only barely works in KnM, where both girls are gay and in love before it happens and get all the screen time to develop before and after it.

I don't read fanfiction, why would I want whatever franchises I like to have more? I can just watch actual yuri since we aren't starved for it anymore. Especially when even the seasonal subtext shows that air today have more screen time for yuri couples than mai-hime, with half as many episodes. To gauge success or popularity? It's revealed pretty early on that Tsukasa's player is female. And Subaru knows about it long before the ending as well. So it's not quite as twist ending-ish as you think it is.

My problems with the mech stuff are mostly that, that it's generic in a very old way, and also that I don't really care about the male dude who is fighting or who is he fighting against. The fight/conflict/whatever it was between Chikane and that purple haired lady baddie was a dozen times more interesting to me than any mech fight in the show, and I really like mechs.

I think Chikane is the deciding factor on whether I prefer the dom/sub in a Yuri relationship actually, Himeko is cute and everything but seeing just how much Chikane utterly adores and wants to protect her is pretty moving.

Souma just gets worse and worse in KnM, taking on 3 Orochi at the same time, then kisses Himeko. That aspect wasn't unprecedented, but as goofy as it was it managed to be less weird about it than many of its predecessors. The conclusion of the series is what really blew my mind at the time.

I ended up watching No Game No Life for non-/u/ reasons and it happened to have a fairly important yuri couple in it, in addition to two shameless bisexuals. So that was cool.

Not something I would recommend for yuri since there is so much het, but it was fun and unlike the het the yuri isn't the butt of every other joke (except in specials 4 and 5 where 5 would have short softcore yuri porn without the comedy). There was a lot of unused potential for yuri fanservice in the last few episodes though, so that was a bit disappointing.
