There's a lot of enthusiasm for yuri-friendly action series, but when it comes to more bonafide yuri, your usual "girls at school" romance reigns supreme in terms of engagement.

We just like pairing things and filling in the blanks more than what's actually happening.

You see series about girls with superpowers or belong to some super secret organization acting as their teen girl task force to beat up grown men and giant monsters and stuff. Honestly you'd probably have better success just writing a one page intro about how one girl is a secret agent or an assassin or some shit, then the rest of the manga is just her coming home after a long day of murdering people and she cuddles and has sex with her girlfriend, and they talk about buying video games and new sheets for the bed.

I don't mind Horiguchi as much as the K-On haters but I really wish they would have used the Grimgar art as the default anime art.

And before you ask, up to you if you want to watch Grimgar. As an 'isekai' it gets Brownie points for the fact that the MCs are boring and invincible. However it tends towards the other scale in that they're so average there's little to no plot progression. It's the closest anime equivalent to watching paint dry. I don't believe there's a yuri relationship in the show either.

Back to 'yuri in 22/7' maybe it'll be a 'deconstruction' of Idol Anime and include a female manager who forces her girls to shave their head and apologise if they date outside the group with boys.

You're a giant retard. Have you ever tried to write a fiction or draw a manga? Contemporary romance reigns supreme in both het and yuri and yaoi because it's easy to produce. School age characters reign supreme in the manga/anime industry because that's the age of the main demographic.

In order to do other genres like action, historical, sport, psychological, etc, it takes a massive amount of research and formulating the plot. Action scenes are notoriously harder to execute as well. Plenty of yuri mangaka/doujinka I know on twitter whine about how they want to make action manga, but it's out of their ability.

There is a massive amount of het works that even if their action titles only account for 5% of all het titles, they still outnumber the amount of all yuri combined. So it's not a matter of yurifags favouring highschool romance more than hetfags, but a matter of statistics.

Murcielago is action/violence/horror and it's one of the most revered manga of /u/. ShizNat is the most popular yuri pairing of all time based on the sheer amount of fanfictions, and they originated from an action anime. NanoFate is the second most popular yuri couple (with about half amount of fanfics compared to ShizNat, based on FFN data), and they too hailed from an action anime. Madoka, Valkyrie Drive, Symphogear are hugely successful psychological and action anime and took /u/ by a storm. Akaiito and Aoishiro are horror/mythos/action and also ones of the most revered yuri games. All these examples showed that what yurifags want are well-written stories. They're just unfortunate enough to be caught in a niche that don't have enough talent pool to produce a variety of stuff, so they're stuck with school girl romance like starving college kids being stuck with instant noodles.

Manga writers should learn from Italian police films from the 80's and Die Hard. Normal setting, normal guns and other props, a turmoil suffering main character without much special power that goes through everything with brute force and gets injured a lot, seemingly implausible odds of winning, simple revenge driven drama to make the bad guy a bit more irritating, lots of violence (not the murcielago over the top violence kind, but something that seems more trauma inducing with more emphasis on pain), etc. It seems since most yuri artists are good at drama, they'd be good at making this stuff. They just need to shift the focus a little bit, from the sole emotional to physical emotional.

What you're thinking of is plotting a situation that leads to the fight and the general development of that fight, both of which are easy to come up with. But when you really sit down to materialize those ideas, you'll be crushed to find out there's so much research and practice needed:
- Write: how to make it easy to visualize the body placement? How to make it feel fast-paced while providing enough details for visualization? How to stave off boredom of a long fight?

Noir, Madlax, El Cazador, Caanan, Gunsmith Cats all have as much shooting or more than Gunslinger Girl and some yuri instead of pedo het.
There tons more anime with yuri and plenty of fighting and action that hasn't been mentioned yet: most mahou shoujo (one of the most popular genre for yuri) starting with Sailor Moon to some odd variants like Flip Flappers, Mouretsu Pirates, Black Rock Shooter, Simoun, Utena, Blue Drop, Akuma No Riddle, Kannazuki no Miko, Rin daughters of Mnemisyne, Yami to Boushi, Ange Vierge, etc.
Just this current season has plenty of anime with action and some level of yuri: Princess Principal, Re:Creators, Hina Logi, Battle Girls, Action Heroine.
Action series varies on quality and level of yuri of course. But some of the most successful and best series have been action-oriented. And there is constant attempts to make new action series with yuri. So I can't even begin to understand anyone complaining that action yuri is lacking. That is simply not the case at all.

There are quite a few action series that has prominent yuri characters, but they're pretty much never the main characters.

It's actually fucking crazy to think about it but KnM, YamiBou and Mai Hime/Otome, even after all these years, are still the only well known shows that actually had main character(s) who featured lesbians with no ambiguity.

While we're on this rant about ACTION, it disappoints me to no end that pic related got seemingly canned after one volume.

I've seen some posts here complain about one or two specific parts of the manga like that one scene with the shota seeing MC's panties, but I think the bottom line is that it just really didn't attract enough of an audience for the two authors to continue collaborating. I'd argue about the general fanservice being too much or maybe if the pace of the story was questionable, but other much worse series have endured and (sometimes) improved. I guess the spark just wasn't there.

Why would I not? Two reasons.
1. Foundation: I have been learning Chinese for several years at school. If I start learning Japanese immediately I'll be starting with year 1 and stuff I unconsciously learned from Japanese websites. When given the choice, build on what I already have or start from ground zero, I choose the former.
2. Comprehensive translation- As I mention the Chinese already comprehensively translate a lot of things. If the end result is trying to understand Japanese media then the Chinese already have most of it covered. That is as good as having the Japanese skill necessary to understand Japanese media at a native level.

They took out all romance and the male is kinda useless. It's a decent sports anime, but that's it.
Keep in mind that while there's a girl who likes another in the anime, they both have routes with romance with the male in the game. They don't care about it in the anime, though.

There's a canon yuri pair that stays yuri in the game, but they're irrelevant side characters.
In short, watch for a fun anime sports with girls being cool more than anything.

I haven't finished the anime yet, but I picked up the complete novel at a con recently for five bucks and flipped to a random page for kicks. I immediately landed on a page of two girls in a spring or something feeling eachother up before a fade to black.

Made me wish there was something similar airing today.

The way Shizuna completely dominates Nagisa into paralysis is so hot.

Something gay enough to have an incredibly intimate scene followed by a fade to blacks where you know for a fact the two characters did it but it's not shown. Or just an incredibly strong implication. Like if in Flip Flappers the second time the prettied up pipe house is shown there's a used box of baby wipes in the background.
