I found high quality scans of the first 3 series but Smoke and Shadow and North and South are pretty scarce. Plus I'm probably gonna get vanned for downloading the first ones anyways.

Anyone recall that chick that wrote the Asami fic Seeking Sato? It was pretty much the tumblr equivalent of Between the Wheels. Remember how she'd say something really salient and then follow it up by reblogging "Asami rejects capitalism for spirituality"?
She's at it again. She called out the Sozin homophobe shit as forced and cringey, but THEN followed it up by saying that Kya choosing to only tell her friends and family that she's gay (which she reveals is Southern Water Tribe tradition) proves that the universe is actually more homophobic than reality, which she considers super-homophobic.

You see, Mike; this is why you don't try to make a message beyond "they''re gay and that's that." You can never satisfy tumblr.

This is indicative of the overall writing of LoK. The airbender comics were a drastic step down from the animated show. But the Korra comics are written in the same vein as the Korra show.

I know you're being disingenuous and intentionally obtuse, but do you think that
a) that was the entirety of the SWT population? Because if we're expected to believe so, then it doesn't speak well to the quality of AtLA's writing.
b) that undergoing hard times where sticking rigidly to a tradition would be detrimental, so the tradition is relaxed during the hard times and becomes practised later again never happens (eg. chicken roast is traditionally eaten on Sundays, you're down to only one chicken and you eat eggs every day, so you eat something else on Sunday)
c) that picking something you don't like and claiming it's indicative of the entire show doesn't fly on /u/, so you should mosey off back to /co/.

All we know is that the men of one village went to fight. "Tribe" means ethnicity. If that truly the entire SWT population, then the events of North and South couldn't have happened. It also means 99.9% of SWT people we see in the comics and LoK are actually just NWT colonists that moved there when no one was looking.

Korra bites back at her father when the last time we saw them interacting was when Korra ran away. What a horrible reintroduction to their dynamic. A protagonist who has to save the world and they actually have living parents and this is what we see of them.

Korra might have known. Kya was just listing things to support her argument. But yeah the Avatar state bullying tactic was really thoughtless. That stuff is a legal issue. But of course, he doesn't have any legal claim to the land inside the portal.

I'm surprised how no one is commenting on the fact that Tokuga/whatever his name is is smart enough to start uniting the gangs, but inversely is so immensely stupid to go fight at the Spirit Portal thinking nothing is going to stop him (besides the air benders that is). He must've heard things from previous years about how it was at first when the portal was opened and how every spirit is it's own 'human' so to speak.

That seems like a pretty big thing to miss.

Which is an argument I would have liked Korra to use to show her development. The portals bother me enough and so does Korra's desire to leave them open, but she doesn't think to step up and put forth an argument like that. Instead she just uses the Avatar state to circumvent legal issues, scare people uselessly, and blow up at her parents.
And then there she is yelling back like a child at the president that if the spirits could vote he'd help them. There wouldn't be spirits there if she didn't just think things through in the first place. And her speech to the people is just empty platitudes.

It could be this is the first time he was able to go see his property so he didn't account for people to be what he sees as loitering around the place. Part 2 will probably have the police show up and Mako and Bolin will be on his side and Korra will be like she was in season 2 and yell at Mako for the Necessary Drama.

A White Lotus member not teaching the Avatar? The ex-general was withholding teaching Aang firebending which is necessary for the Avatar to master all four elements so he could defeat the Fire Nation and stop the 100 Year War that has decimated the nations. Roku appears without Aang's full conscious effort and informs the ex-general who "he" is and how they are capable.
While Korra used it willingly against an individual who has a legal claim to land that shouldn't have a portal there as even Korra says that this portal was a mistake to that rock spirit. And even Korra sees that the portal is causing problems what with how the spirits are agitated by the people milling about.

So one example helps the world and the other is Korra trying to help the spirits who do not even want to be there in the first place at the expense of humanity.

I'd need to rewatch the Wan part and the Book 2 finale, but I get the impression that maybe at the end of his life Wan felt remorse that he wasn't able to make peace between humans and spirits, and that closing the portals didn't actually bring peace either as humans fought each other. Korra felt that when she connected with Wan and she wants to correct that hoping that she can make it work.

Plus her direct predecessor believed in the "four nations should be four" ideal so hard that he was ready to flush out generations of cross-nation rapport at one point. Granted, Aang did reconsider, which is why we have Republic City. But his legacy is still a very heavily divided world, and has that actually brought peace? Not really.

Korra sees and understands this history in her own - albeit slighly naïve - way and actively looks for an alternative solution instead of trying to fight every fire in every corner of the world until she's dead from exhaustion. She's got a bunch of really powerful backers-up to work with too so her idea isn't really any worse than the next one.

Would assume at least some of the spirits that were left lingering around the human side of the portal are some kind of vanguard to keep an eye out on humans that would try to do the spirit world harm. I just finished rewatching LoK before I read the comic. Is it just me or is pretty much everything Kuvira ever did or said completely fucking retarded? Somehow she managed to bullshit her way to become literally Hitler while making the worst logical decisions and gambles at every turn, uttering complete nonsense regardless of whether her entire freaking army was within earshot or not. And nobody in her government or dominion ever thought to doubt her crock? Sow seeds of dissent from within or something? I'll try to give a short list, ignoring minor or more subjective moments such as Asami looking more or less concerned than other characters in a given scene:

-It must be pointed that right from the start and after the initial reluctance on Korra's side they actually get along well. They never blame each other for their issues with Mako through Books 1 and 2.

-(As a happy accident although there are no yuri intentions here, it almost looks like Asami is hitting on Korra on the pool and the car race, because that was the episode where Asami upgrades from background character to major character, we don't still know wich side she'll be on and they probably wanted to make her appear bold when talking to Korra. While not intentional, this helped the ship sail)

-So, right after Makorra is finished at the end of Book 2, we happen to have a scene where Asami is hanging with Korra for no reason, she handles her the keys of the car (looking at her kinda like in the racing episode and this time it is NOT unintentional on the writers' part) and we see them getting along really, really well. While not a romantic moment, the tone and placement of the scene at the first post-Makorra episode would have been enough to raise all alarms, had Asami been a guy.

-Generally speaking, they spend the majority of Book 3 hanging together, they troll Mako together, train together, they sit next to each other when having meals, etcetera. We also get them paired by circumstances all along the season and we get scenes such as the one of Asami riding away with an unconscious Korra which again would have been seen as way suspicious if Asami had been a guy.

-Asami offers to be the one to watch over Korra as she meditates, when there were plenty of friends around to do that, many of which were probably more qualified for the task. We've seen similar scenes before, with P'li watching over Zaheer, and Katara watching over Aang.

-Asami apparently takes care of Korra while she can't walk, with all the tasks, work and intimacy it involves. She takes her hand and says -She- wants -Her- to know -She- is there for -Her-, if -She- ever wants to talk, or -[long pause]-, -Anything-. She later offers to go with her to the fucking pole and stay with her while she recovers, even though she's got a company to run.

-Korra receives many letters while in the pole, eventually only replies to Asami, and decides to go to Republic City after that.

-Hugs Asami so tight that the animators miscolor Korra's abdomen. Blushes when Asami compliments her hair and she compliments back. Has a much shorter hug with Mako, and she's looking to the side as she walks into his arms. Asami gets mad at Korra when she suggests that her father might be manipulating her, but the amount of -You- and -Me- as well as -Three Years- makes it clear that it's not actually the comment about her father what makes her react so strongly. Korra immediatly tries to apologize and calm Asami, as opposed to how she argues with Mako. During the action and chasing scenes in the episode Korra and Asami are well coordinated while Mako is arguing with both. The final hug has Korra and Asami mostly hugging each other while Mako is hugging both from the side.

-Once Korra is settled back at the Air Temple Island Asami is apparently spending her time there with her and offering her some tea and talking to her about avatar stuff and encouraging her?

I know a mom exactly like Aang IRL. Three sons, middle one is really good at hockey, gets way more leeway in pretty much everything. Said mom loves the other sons just as well, the middle one just gets extra way easier.

It's really easy to be alienated as a kid, simply by not having as much as the next kid, especially if he's your own blood. Children obviously can't operate on an adult's level in a lot of the concepts that are required to understand something like favoritism, which leads to unhappy childhood memories no matter how well you understand those things later in life.

I doubt Aang was intending to be a garbage dad, and I doubt he actually was all that terrible in the first place. Those janky childhood memories of unfair sharing between siblings add up. Plus he did have some symphatizable circumstances.

I can agree with her on that. There's a lot of others things they can do and just have the two girls be in a relationship without having to drag out a history book all of a sudden. But Mike brings out the history notes and calls attention to it when there's already problems in sight before them.
They also push aside how the people of RC typically react as a group to make it seem like they are okay with Korra's actions.

Mako and Bolin are probably going to be called in with Lin to work against the airbenders who want to keep the portal free from the city's influence. Plus how Aang had a favorite in the first place when any of his kids could have airbending children themselves, and how the air acolytes were keeping the culture alive. Kya and Bumi could be spiritually inclined like how the air acolytes chose to be and keep the air nomad culture alive in that way.

I see it as bad writing, making Aang have this fault that doesn't make sense given his character. Or how Korra won't close the portal despite now even spirits asking her to close it and the portal interfering with electronic communications. Things are just happening much like how Aang just left his other two kids behind and Katara was okay with this and probably ignored them too. Just like how the Avatar was raised in ignorance despite being the peace officer of the world. Just like how we are told that Korra is finally connected to her spiritual self and then season 2 happens.

If anything, being a selfish child at heart would mean him taking all his children along even if they didn't want to go. Since he did have to transmit everything he knew of the air nomads and their culture, he would best do it with multiple people. If Tenzin dies, then the culture would die with Tenzin if no one else is versed in it or did not have the potential to have airbending children like Bumi and Kya would be capable of doing so.
He chose the air nation in his actions as Avatar, it is something his character does. He didn't have to supervise the growth of RC as the United Republic of Nations isn't just that city (even if the show keeps wanting to make it seem that way.) And the only evidence we have of Aang still being a child at heart is that picture the fisherman had of him doing the air trick with that food.

Yet she's the one that obviously has a lot more to learn (despite already knowing how to connect with others and listen to them) and literally being the buddha with her past four seasons. This is another banal excuse for Korra to fall into the self-indulgent neurosis that plagues her character in the show.
