That is silly. We know that the majority of Japanese artists don't like translations, and either we care about that, or we don't. If you care about what the authors want, then you cannot justify publishing or reading a translated work that does not have explicit permission to be translated. You know that you're doing something to their work that many of them don't want done; the fact they simply haven't happened to find out about it yet, or don't have the energy to bother complaining, doesn't make that any more acceptable. And similarly, if you don't care about what they want and aren't bothered by the fact many of them don't want translations, it shouldn't make any difference whether they know or not.

Many authors are happy about having their work scanned, many scanlators believe they are helping the authors by publicising their work, and, a series with no English scans is much less likely to be chosen in the industry's regular "what should we license next" polls.
