Never mind, ignore my posts about Yururi Fuwari. Bluemoonscans apparently collaborated with the artist and made an official release for Yururi Fuwari. The amazon link for the book now contains both the Japanese and English versions. I only realized after looking at the posts on dynasty-scans.

>>
>>2380594
What's wrong with the chapter?

It's basically a het-leaning one involving Ha-chan and some merboy who gets stuck with some Beauty and the Beast stuff. It's also the longest chapter of the volume, meaning it's no simple feat to typeset. Luckily it's all balanced out by the rest of the series (especially the final chapter).

Bottom right narration box is set in CC Samaritan (Astro City), is there a reason for that? By the way, narration boxes are usually set in italic. Sentences should be punctuated.

If I were lettering this, I'd drop the Anime Ace, use Wild Words for speech bubbles and Samaritan Italic for narration.

I'm guessing this is someone else's TL and not the one from my archive, which is fair enough if that's what you wanna go for. Not sure dog-eared is the best way to describe books (I believe yoreyore is "worn out"?)

I procrastinated because the book was unusually messy to debind and the pages had a glue crust left on them, which had to be removed before scanning, but here it is:

Good luck. I wish I could help you more but can't spare the time. I tried to pay attention to where glue crumbs made scans blurry, but might have overlooked some places. If you feel like rescanning would save you some trouble with a page, ping me in #kicchiri@rizon. Same if you want bigger images or less lossy compression.

I'm translating a fairly short doujin, but I hit a snag.

The premise of the story is girl A wanting girl B to say her name without the -chan honorific, and the problem is I don't put honorifics in my translations. Currently I have no idea how to break through this language barrier.

Any suggestions or ideas?
>>
>>2394448
Put honorifics in your translation.
>>
>>2394448
Really no good way to do a lot of honorifics other than >>2394456 or maybe a TLnote.
>>
>>2394448

Maybe she always says Miss whatever. Otherwise just put the honorifics in. Basically the whole manga reading population will understand.
>>
>>2394448
Why the fuck wouldn't you put honorifics in your translations?
>>
>>2394456
>>2394653
>>2394658
I'm thinking of using "Girl A, dear" and then "Girl A" or something similar. Certainly not "Miss". I could get away with surname to first name, but the context is off because Girl B has always addressed Girl A using her first name with honorifics.

>>2394660
Japanese honorifics are not English.
>>
>>2394662
Nobody who reads Japanese stories really gives a shit, I think it's unreasonable to completely remove them. Replacing honorifics with stuff like "miss" just doesn't feel right either.
>>
>>2394664
>Replacing honorifics with stuff like "miss" just doesn't feel right either.
It depends. Miss, Mr., etc. are not 1:1 replacements and there are other ways like translating the dialogue by tone (ie polite tone to very casual tone).
>>
>>2394662
>I'm thinking of using "Girl A, dear" and then "Girl A" or something similar. Certainly not "Miss".
"Girl A, dear" would just make her sound like a grandma or something. There's really no equivalent and trying to replace them will only make for unnatural dialogue 95% of the time because we don't use honorifics nearly as frequently as Japanese.
>>
>>2374126
"Hey guys I was wondering if you needed any help from someone with no skills of the type required?"
>>
>>2394448
Make Girl B use nicknames "originally" in lieu of -chan. So she switches instead to using her actual name.

That's a pretty good cleaning job. Everything looks well to me but I'm not sure if the " in the last bubble of page 35 and in the first of page 36 make much sense.

When you have a definitive version just post it in the Nanoha thread and the doujin should make its way to dynasty and nanofate by itself.
>>
>>2407225
Page 35:
Try to avoid type setting "I" on it's own line. It makes the bubble look very uneven. Plus this >>2407279
I'd drop the quotation marks.

Page 38:
"Don't touch me"
The "C" in that font looks a lot like a "G".
Your call if you want to use a different one.

Page 39:
"Please make sure"
It's pretty small. I'd make the bold font a little smaller to make more room in the bubble.

Other than those minor things, very good job. Especially with the SFX. Definitely top notch.
>>
>>2407279
>>2407305

p35-36:
>Fate: 色々考えてね
>なのはが一番欲しいものって
>もしかして
>私...かなって
>Hayate: かな... ちゃうわああ
I thought that using a quote would be most appropriate. Therefore, quotation marks are essential. And like multiple paragraphs spoken by one speaker in plain and comic books, every bubble begins with a quotation mark, but only the final ends with it. If that translation is wrong and you've got the correct one I'd be grateful if you posted it so I can finish this one tomorrow and move on.

Regarding the solitary "I", it's not that critical in comic book typesetting, as it is in regular books. I think some publication by Comicraft backs me up on this, as do some comic books. If anything, I think when lettering manga, people should bend the rules about widows and orphans more often. But I'll look into re-centering the bubble, since the first lane has more white space, and I think I auto-aligned that one.

p38:
Yeah, I noticed that. It's more prominent on panel 2 rather than panel 5, right? I'll look for a better font.

p39:
Oh shit, totally forgot about fixing that. Does this look good?

Huge thanks for helping!

It's not so much the quotation marks that are the problem, it's that you have unclosed sets them.
You have one at the start of "The thing [...]" and one at the start of "might just" and neither of them close.
For quoting one line, it should just be "The thing Nanoha wants most... might just... be me!"
I don't know. Maybe use the quotation marks, and change the font for that one like to make the message more clear.

And yeah, page 39 looks fine.

All around great job.

The quotes are unnecessary. Like if you were to say something like "I was thinking I might go out this afternoon, would you care to join me?" you don't put quotation marks around "I might go out this afternoon" part because you're not directly quoting your thoughts. And you can nix the "and I realized" and "something like that" bits and maybe throw in another "maybe" or something to express less certainty about what the thing Nanoha wants most is for the もしかして.

No, it's you that needs to learn. Marking something with that particle doesn't make it a direct quote. Diret quotes are when the exact wording is given.
>>
>>2407744
I gave that non-direct quote example, but really it's not even a quote sort of thing. You can pretty much just think of that って as being は or というのは, establishing なのはが一番好きなもの as the subject, like ~好きなものはもしかしてわたしかな. って is used for more than simple quoting. Goggled Anon posts a lot of scripts, but they have like 50% accuracy at best, because he uses text hooker OCR and then makes his best guess based on what google translate says.
If you use any of his stuff, be sure to find someone to do through TL checks.
>>
>>2408745
Wait really?
Because I've proofread a grand total of one of his scripts while typesetting it and thought it was fine.
(And this isn't important, but OCR and text hookers are two different things)
>>
>>2408788
Yes, really. You might need to brush up on your Japanese if you think it's fine. And they're clearly talking about KanjiTomo, which is an OCR text hooker. It does both things.
>>
>>2408788
From my experience, it's mostly just that anon's personal grudge against me. I'll never admit to being an expert in Japan (lord knows you'd need a lot of free time to learn kanji off by heart), but far as I can tell using OCRs and Google Translate (which I mainly just use to handwrite a kanji if the former can't pick it up) is pretty much just like using any kind of dictionary or phrasebook. Unless they're absolute experts or were raised with the language, there's probably not that many translators who don't at least use some point of reference.
>>
>>2408800
Nothing stopping you from making actual corrections or constructive criticism.
>>
>>2408788
I've looked over a few of his scripts and from what I've seen I too suspect use of machine translation. I think it could possibly be that he only knows some basic Japanese and supplements with machine translation or it could be entirely rewritten machine translation. Either way, I certainly agree that the accuracy of the scripts is insufficient and Goggled doesn't dispute that. That's why they put that warning that all of their scripts need to be QC'd in the OP. Funnily enough I think that if they spent the time they probably spend doing this into learning Japanese, they could actually be half decent at it by now.

https://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=manga&illust_id=64535120

Hopefully it can get translated.
>>
I, for one, am grateful, that there's an available translator. I don't know Japanese, and I cannot verify the claims you make about Goggled Anon, but the fact that someone consistently puts his time into translating yuri is good enough for me. I mean, from my point of view, how do I tell a good translation from bad one? Do I ask every translator for his Japanese proficiency cert? His degree in Japanese Translation? Or do I believe everything a person claims on an anonymous lesbian worship guest book? Beggars can't be choosers.

Don't get me wrong, I do not encourage machine translations and guesslating, especially without putting up an explicit notice, but if all the time is spent on arguing about the quality of translations, people would be reading jack.

As a typesetter, I can tell you that 99% of amateur typesetters (and a fair share of paid ones) are clueless idiots. Without knowing the basics of comic book lettering, these clowns go great lengths to jerk off their e-peen. Instead of learning from proper sources, they read a typesetting guide on a manga forum written by a retard no better than them and consider themselves Richard Starkings. The result? Cramming dozens of fonts into 20 pages. The overuse of Augie as a side-text font. Complete ignorance of basic typographic concepts like "leading". People considering Wild Words and Anime fucking Ace good typefaces. If that doesn't tell you about the state of manga lettering, I don't know what does. So what do you do? Do you tell every typesetter he's fucking shit and call it a day while waiting for a unicorn to appear and flawlessly typeset whatever you want released?

I imagine the situation looks the same to qualified Japanese translators. But in the end, when there's a lack of translators, the best ability is availability. I too would like to have all my yuri translated by professionals who take interest in yuri manga, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon.
>>
>>2408926
And I've yet to see any constructive criticism. There weren't any corrections, just calling Goggled names.
>>
The people attacking Goggled are so dumb, they don't even understand that they are making Goggled look like a victim.

If you want to make him look bad or shut him off, correct and post his mistakes whenever someone asks for QC of one of his scripts. Or just give a different translation script so he doesn't get credited.
>>
>>2408875
I have corrected for Goggled before, but stopped after I suspected the usage of machine translation. I actually somewhat enjoy helping out by correcting people's misunderstandings and I might take a look at >>2408162 later in fact if nobody else does, but I'm not here to correct Google Translate nor do I have any interest in the majority of what Goggled works on, so I have no intent to translate it myself either.

Criticism of translations can be helpful in that it can make interested parties, editors and readers alike, aware that a translation is sub-par so that they can request QC, try to find another translator, or avoid it altogether. Even if it were of absolutely no help whatsoever, criticizing for criticisms' sake is perfectly fine.
>>
>>2408934
Fair enough. If you had corrected him earlier, thank you. If you stopped for whatever reason, that's your decision. But when someone says he's a shithead whose translation is polished Google Translate without argumentation and examples, and then throws a tantrum, that's not really criticism.
>>

>>
>>2409001
You can typeset what you like. Worst you'll get is either feedback on any typoes you might make or stuff about the story itself.

>>
>>2380863
Any update on this? Now it is my turn to wonder if they dropped off the face of the planet lol
>>
>>2409002
The fact that people don't complain does not neccessarily mean your work is good. I don't remember people complaining about "Do You Like Big Girls?" (not yuri), and that shit could be used as an entropy source.

Here's an excercise: get a mainstream comic book (DC, Marvel, Dark Horse etc) and read a chapter or two. Now compare them to your work. You will see that professional lettering is so polished and refined it just feels natural. Like the letters are exactly where they belong. And it's all thanks to letterer's attention to the comic and following carefully formulated rules, bending them if neccessary. And this is not a matter of taste, but decades of trial and error building the foundation of comic book lettering, borrowing wisdom from not comic-specific typography and questioning the purpose of any lettering decision.

And then you have "Hajimete no Gal", quite popular rom-com scanlated by Mangazuki. Can you tell me what's wrong with it? To help you out, compare it to Viz' release of Bokutachi wa Benkyo ga Dekinai. It may be minor, but this is what separates an amateur from a professional. If you think I cherry-picked it, take a look at the digital release of Punpun. Or, I don't know, pick something you consider good.

If the first thought that pops up is "But muh manga is different!" check out Tsundere Service Providers. Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii c. 19, for example. Now those guys deserve respect, I consider them literate scanlators, though they could brush up some things.

The digital release of "My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness" has good lettering too, though you could argue about some manga-specific things.

Not the anon you're talking to, but I just wanted to give my two cents in on this "issue". Anyway from what I can see, if no one is complaining about this then they probably either don't care enough to say anything or think it's good or at least acceptable enough in quality. Personally I don't pay too much attention to typefaces/formatting/etc when reading manga/doujinshi so whether or not it is "professional" is a moot point. As long as the text itself makes sense and flows right, then I'm happy.

caring this fucking much about it is autistic at best.
as long as the words doesn't flow out of the box or they become small like shit it's fine.
>>
>>2409047
I'd like to thank you for caring this much about it and for studying this much into it. Like timing for subtitling etc, these things can make the experience of engaging with a work of a language one doesn't know as seamless as possible and can affect their enjoyment of it whether they recognize that fact or not. Something just slapped together will become a pain to read or watch and it wouldn't be the source's fault. For example, nier automata annoyed me with its spindly font and awful timing and I knew it would be difficult for someone who doesn't know any Japanese to catch everything and they may switch to the english dub or become uninterested in the narrative because of it.
Although once in a while I come across some raw manga too with the text squished together or pushing right against the border of the bubble or whatever and I certainly think it looks bad and wonder why the author had such low standards.
>>
>>2409001
It really all comes down to you and your standards for quality. If you're okay with releasing something using a translation that could have translations errors and could even possibly be revised machine translation, then nobody can stop you. There are even worse releases out there after all. Like machine translation rewritten by people who barely speak English bad, God knows why they even bother. I would suggest going with something that's not text heavy though if you can't get someone to QC for you but really want to work on something regardless. Something like an 18+ work that's mostly moaning will of course be less prone to error and while a lot of people still hold high expectations toward translation quality even in porn, there are at least some people who aren't as concerned about it since the focus isn't the story generally.
>>
>>2409406
Ok, I'll abide by my quality standards and only typeset QC'd scripts from here. Which will probably mean I won't be typesetting anything anymore.
>>
>>2409438
If you want to get a script quality checked scripts to typeset, there is a good handful on Yuriproject.

Obviously anon didn't mean it literally. Just that you shouldn't decide not to typeset based on the words of someone who was clearly there to stir up trouble. You can probably be more cynical of the complex plot-based translations, but the basic porn stuff I'm pretty confident in. You memorise pretty much the entire bedroom dialogue after a few years doing this thing.

For the sake of the argument, what are good resources that anon can reccomend for improving Japanese, specifically in translating text and stuff (ideally free because it's 4chan and we hate paying for things). I'll make sure to stick any good ones in the OP next thread.

I recommend this epwing dictionary to use in rikaisama https://nyaa.si/view/321633 (I can only figure out how to get wadai5 to work for some reason). I don't see this point stressed all that much so I want to say to move on from edict to epwing dictionaries and full japanese resources as much as possible. Edict can be very misleading so it's best to get used to employing better resources as soon as possible to prevent harmful memorization habits from forming. In case there's anyone like me who had never realized it's a thing, discovering that epwing dictionary was one of the most important things I ever did for my studying.
>>
>>2413948
I too highly recommend the switch to a Japanese dictionary as soon as you find it viable. You can find this epwing as well as some Japanese dictionary epwings for like 大辞林 or 広辞苑 somewhere in >>2412316 or just use one of multiple online dictionaries.
>>
>>2413982
Oh there is a mega link in there, oops. Thanks. Epwing's only mentioned once irrelevantly in the guide resource list so I wanted to make sure people knew how important they are.
Also thank god, the J-J epwings from here work in rikaisama. I don't even remember where I got these old files from, so that solves that for me.

Sentences could certainly flow better, can be a bit unnatural at times. I usually don't just write out the sentence so you'll have to go through and put corrections in manually. I don't think there were too many translation issues but I would suggest improving your Japanese some more before giving it another go. As has been said in the thread already, try using a Japanese dictionary.

>The Earthling, too, will be worried if you keep silent
Something like troubled or inconvenienced would be probably be better than worried.

>I have not been studying the language of this planet yet.
I haven't studied the. No yet.

>You want a part of our water?
want us to share

>(check translation?) We are a people of water, floating about in our planet's oceans.
whom drift about the sea of stars (space)

>何世代にも渡る航海でコロニー船の老朽化が進み
何世代にも渡る modifies 航海 and で indicates that as reasoning for the wear of the colony ship advancing. The verb stem in this case joins the sentence with the next similarly to how て form would, but more formal.

>Water has been leaking out from breakages in the ship.
Sprang a leak or something over leaking. Singular breakage would probably be a little better.

>さ、王としてのお役目です、セラ様
Now for/Now, that's your duty as ruler/queen, Sera-sama

>えーとまずは問題の先生に…ってそういう場合じゃ…
顧問の先生 not 問題.

>I'm investigating what Minami's favorite could be.
Investigated what Minami likes. (Same for subsequent 好物 usage)

>Since Minami-sama and Sera-sama are linked, they can share thoughts and memories.
I/we understand/can see Minami-sama's thoughts and memories.

>Her own body is tied up with something long and narrow.
She bound/tied her own body with.

>I t ' s o v e r
Something more akin to my life is over, this is it, I'm ruined or something would probably be better.
>>
>>2408162
>>2415627
>We put your body into place
Immobilized or something would probably be better.

>My body's tightening up!!
Passive. Being squeezed, constricted.

>(check translation?) Your feelings are transmitted very well, Minami.
Getting across, reaching, or something like that over transmit.

>ふふふ…みなみ様の周りは固まったままですから
Still congealed/solidified/have a firm hold around Minami.

>そんな入れ…
She gets cut off so it's hard to say exactly what she was going to say, but I'd guess it's just her stating the obvious that she's about to get some alien toungue as opposed to say an attempt at saying "no, don't."

>The repairs on the ship are done, so [unsure about the rest]?
"but" rather than "so." いかが致しますか is essentially a more formal どうしますか

>Learned Japanese
There's nothing unnatural about the sentence itself, it's just casual. The usage of katakana would pertain more to her pronunciation not being fluent sounding. You could just keep it like this instead of otherwise somehow indicating her pronunciation's not perfect, but I just thought I'd note this.

To upload. If you want, you can have the 6.7 GiB big 10200px height original scans (still jpeg though), or I can prepare any size below that with your favourite file extension. Just give me the parameters and an hour. I used to include that sentence when I uploaded raws publicly but stopped at some point because everybody seemed to be fine with 4000h at jpeg 90% quality. The idea is that you can download it quickly and the artifacts vanish after cleaning and downscaling to release size, although I never tried it. Do they not?
>>
>>2415907
It's not about file extension, but lossy compression. 10200 px? Is that a 2-page spread? What kind of DPI is that? I'd prefer lossless TIFF or PNG at 300 or 600 DPI.
>>
>>2415907
I admit it, your reasoning about the artifacts seems fair. But why use lossy compression, when lossless isn't that big? You rarely need more than 600 DPI (300 DPI is commonplace) and 8 bit color depth for scanlating manga, so file sizes won't be astronomical.
>>
>>2415926
>It's not about file extension, but lossy compression.
Yes, I understood that.
>What kind of DPI is that?
It's 1200dpi and 10200 is the height of the image, regardless of being a spread.

>>2415989
I would scan lossless at 600dpi if I could (scanning would be faster too). What's holding me back is my scanner and/or driver. It's a ridiculous situation, but I only get non-butchered scans at 1200dpi (and maybe above but I didn't check), and at that resolution a size factor of 1.55 from TIFF vs. JPEG does make a difference. I might have to look into that someday, but back then when I urgently needed to scan something, I made a quick comparison and decided that if it's 1200dpi anyway, I might go with the smaller but lossy format because there should be virtually no difference after downscaling to a reasonable size (and then exporting to a lossless format if desired). Plus 1200dpi makes me feel like I do srs archival.

Anyway, to get the file size ratio above, I scanned the same page into JPEG, TIFF and PNG. It turns out that the PNG file for this page is smaller than the JPEG. I would expect that for a cleaned page but not for one with this much texture, but then again it's hard to predict deflate. I regret that I apparently didn't compare the PNG file size before deciding on JPEG and I should thank you for insisting. I'll scan lossless from now on, but I could still punch the big JPEGs of this book through a script that gives you lossless files of something that was downscaled from lossy files, if you want.

That's because you imported the PDF to Photoshop as pages at 300 DPI. An upscale, in other words. If you imported it as images, they'd be about x1500. And they still have the same artifacts as the pixiv raws.

The best choice would be using the pixiv raws, since they have the least amount of artifacts.

If you care, there's also a tool that will download all of the images in a set (or even all images on an account or that matches a set of tags) called PixivUtil.

You will still need an account in order to access full-size images with it, however.
