It honestly feels a little weird to be on /u/, defending the idea that the pervert lesbian character who gropes, films and flirts with other girls gets some sort of pleasure out of it. I guess people really like the sanctity of their OTPs, which is fine, but I think Nozomi's perpetual multi-target horniness makes for an interesting contrast with her pure and selfless love for Eli.

Romantic implies a degree of mutuality that isn't really there when groping someone against there will, so sure, it's not that. I think Nozomi's feelings for Nico are at least somewhat romantic, though, given how much she cares for her and finds it hard to keep her hands away from her. The same goes for her and Rin in some of the non-anime material. It's not a threat to her relationship with Eli, though, and I can't see Nozomi ever doing anything about it, if only because she once saw a documentary about Fleetwood Mac.

The way I see NozoNico is very similar to some other alternative ships like NozoRin or HonoMaki. They clearly have some attraction and could get along very well romantically. It just didn't happen because they are already attached to their closest shipping partners. I don't really think its a stretch because µ's as a whole are very close, even more than a normal circle of friends. SID in particular highlights this a lot.

Its why I'm quite fond of checking out fanfics and doujins of such alternative pairings (as long as they are written in character). Its a nice "What if" look on how their relationships can work.

Also consider that like µ's, the CV for each member the unit grouping options were centered on had some kind of quality which made her suitable for the role. Emitsun was the leader, Mimorin was the "star" of Milky Holmes (and Sharo is pretty much the heroine of that story), Jolno had performing experience with fripSide. Similarly, Aqours' options were Anchan (leader), King (has experience being an internet personality) and Ainya (classically trained singer with established technical ability). This was likely taken into account so they could help the units they were in develop some focus, as the µ's units did.

AZALEA's dynamic whether in-character or between their portrayers is such that none of them is a clear "leader", if there actually is anything like that. Dia probably would talk the loudest and the other two go along with her/rebel, whichever fits at the time. Out of character, they're basically the meme squad who stoke fires while laughing at the rest as they goof up.
