Manga is completely different than anime. Manga is Morishima Akiko's own story, not Ikuhara's.
Spoilers from Volume 2:
Kureha is befriended by Sumika who is rumoured to be a witch, and this makes Ginko miserable.
Lulu's brother Mirun was killed by a car on the street, when he ran after Lulu to the convinient store
Yurika and Kale (Ginko's mother) were in reletionship since high school.
Lulu discovers Yurika in bed with Kale.
Yurika, Kale and Reia were all close. And it is Ginko’s mother, who ate Reia.
Kale wrote the picture book that Reia read to her all the time, about the lost bear princess.
Kureha runs after Ginko to tell she knows the truth about her mother and she doesn’t care, because she loves Ginko.

I still don't think Ginko's mother literally ate Kureha's mother.
It can be something akin to how Ginko told Kureha she killed Sumika in the anime But actually she only let her die because of jealousy.

Morishima's cute designs being animated was the best part for me. It feels like great, dedicated yuri artists sometimes languish in their own genre, so I hope this helps her get wider recognition in the future~

So the 'kare' from the anime, which we assumed was a male character played onscreen by a woman, is actually a woman named Kale, at least in the manga.
