>"Mother!" Is the Worst Movie of the Year, Maybe Century
Good thing Myra Breckinridge came out last century, eh, Rex?
>>87826813
From yesterday's thread
>When it comes time for Mother to finally have their baby, she and the poet retreat to his upstairs office, which is basically the Garden of Eden/Heaven. She gives birth but refuses to let the poet take the baby to the throng of onlookers downstairs. Unfortunately, as sleep deprivation gets the best of her, the poet snatches the baby from her arms and gives it to the people. The baby, in this instance, is Jesus Christ. Those familiar with the New Testament knew what was coming next—the poet gives his baby to the people, who then kill it. Mother is horrified, even moreso when the people start eating the baby while crying (i.e. consuming the body of Christ as in communion, during which we remember Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins).
>Mother gets trampled and beaten badly, almost to the point of death, before she makes her escape. The parallel here is humanity killing the planet (i.e. Mother Nature). But as we’re experiencing right now with climate change, Mother Nature fights back. Lawrence’s character screams in terror, shaking the house (i.e. Earth), before running to the basement where she lets her wrath loose in full fury. Fittingly, she chooses an oil drum as her weapon (i.e. the fossil fuel industry) and sets the entire place on fire, killing all of humanity.
>>87825601
Name one example
>>87826966
>The poet, being God/creator and thus immortal, survives and carries the badly burned Mother upstairs. She protests, asking him to stop, but he carries on opening her chest and pulling out another crystal like the one Pfeiffer and Harris’ characters broke at the beginning of the movie. It’s here that the gloomy ending comes into full view, as we realize Lawrence’s Mother was simply one of many Earths that God has created. Lawrence’s Mother tells him to stop, warning that humanity will always do this—turn on its creator, itself, and of course the Earth. But he strives to create, and thus he takes the crystal to the upstairs room, places it on the mantle, and the house restores itself and a brand new Mother wakes up in the bed, fresh-eyed and unaware that she’s just the next iteration of the cycle.

>>87830550
He's kind of her daddy.
Its not about Christianity. It seems like it is, but it just isn't. The Poet wants to make a recreation of the bible, but that is a plot that runs parallel to the main character's. And that's the thing, its all about a character trying to defy the narrative. She wants to be important. She wants to be part of the story. But she just isn't no matter how hard she tries. The only time she actually causes something to happen is when he is paying attention to her. All the other people do not matter at all. She can't kick them out of the house, she can't get the Poet to do anything about it. She is only a filler character trying to be the protagonist, which is the real meaning here.
I liked it a lot. It just seema that movie offends almost everyone.

And they did it by explicitly breaking with the dominant modes of tradition. There is no Josquin without breaking from Perotin, no Bach without breaking from Josquin, no Mozart without breaking from Bach, no Beethoven without breaking from Mozart, no Wagner without breaking from Beethoven, no Debussy/Schoenberg without breaking from Wagner.
Once the liturgical element was overshadowed as the primary mode of expression for musicians around the baroque period, it's been nothing but epochal breaks and reactions since.

Haven't seen it, so I can't comment on it. How can something with such a small budget flop so bad?
>loved tree of live
>kind of liked Noah's ark
>most bloved horrormovies that scared the shit out of me are Antichrist and Stalker
Do you think I could like this movie?
>>87827452
Isn't this the same board that eats up all the shallow and hamfisted religious imagery in Snyder imagery
>>87825094
>some melodramatic femmypeeny betablogger "thinks" this movie is bad, probably because there's something going on inside it that flies in the face of his gay little socialist agenda and doesn't want people to see it
Guess I'm gonna go see mother! now :^)
>>87833097
Stalker wasn't even scary at all

Except you are very much meant to sympathize completely with Mother and almost no one else.
It's actually the most feminist and pro-environmentalist film to come out in decades, so naturally SJWs complain about it because they can't look past the brutal group beating scene at more than face value.

Can confirm. Went to a old-style theater in a west suburb of Cleveland to see it. There were 20 people in there including me out of about 100 seats.
There was mostly confused laughter by the end of the movie, quickly followed by complaining.
Even I had trouble processing what I saw, but the car ride to my apartment made me come to the decision that I liked it and it was certainly a good ride.
>>87828797

How bad is lads? Is it straight trash or just too edgy for the average moviegoer?
>>87835440
Too edgy for the average moviegoer.
The rotten tomatoes score is actually quite spot-on this time around, both the overall "bottom line" and the audience score.
It could show it to my friends and half would hate it and half would love it.
>>87835440
This movie is pure kino. Probably too edgy for 90% of the plebeian class. The second coming of Only God Forgives.
>>87835440
it's both
>>87826268
I don't seem to remember any part of the film that was anti-biblical.
>>87835440
it's good. absolutely lovecraftian.
>>87831424
Fucking this. Its allegory is more subtle and far more pertinent. What's more, it manages to pull it off without resorting to nameless ciphers.

>>87835440
>Too edgy for JLaw fans
>Not enough jump scares for horror fans
>Too on the nose for Aronofsky fans
It has barely any appeal apart from a small section of viewers who just want to see some fucked up arthouse flick in a mainstream cinema
It's great though
What was that weird shit that was clogging the toilet?
>>87835666
a heart?
>>87835666
Parts of the Baby from the previous Mother that the Man had ingested in the previous iteration of Creation.
It's his best movie since probably Wrestler. It's not even bad, it looks and sounds amazing, and all the actors were good, even JLaw. I could not give a single shit about the symbolism and interpritation of it. Movie succeeds at being unsettling and really makes you think about setting up a home party.
Normies gonna norm. Thanks Darren.
>>87833099
It's not the imagery. It's the message:Superman's not a god, just looks like one.
The imagery is pretty consistently beautiful, though.
>>87835835
>really makes you think about setting up a home party
Best review I've seen so far
>>87835661
>Too on the nose for Aronofsky fans
As if his movies aren't always on the nose. He's not a perfect filmmaker, I love his stuff because it's beautiful to look at and because somehow he still manages to make big budgeted mainstream movies that are edgy arthouse flicks at it's core. Guy has a vision and he manages to get money and A list actors to go with it, even if it's not that amazing.
>>87829698

classical is not even a genre
it's like taking all the music made from the last 100 years and calling it "popular" while claiming it's a genre by itself
most noteworthy composers didn't even fit into the conservative consensus at the time, it's a really relative word given the context
>>87836111
According to this movie fame destroys relationships. Some of it could be autobiographical. But Aronofsky is banging JLaw now, so apparently he did learn anything from reality or the movie.
>>87828470

Also, another movie mixing religion with climate change? Maybe he should just make the movie about the subject hes most familiar with.
>>87825094
>Apparently anti-religious
>Plebs and critics apparently hate it
I bet /tv/ loves it.
Is there anything more lazy than bible references?
>>87836372
Bible references by Aronofsky
>>87836372

>>87836446
The idea comes from God (Bardem) doing whatever he wants with Mother Earth (JLaw). So God's creation (humanity) fucks up the Earth (Mother). So God is to blame for what he did. Yet at the end, the cycle restarts, nothing changes and you get no message.
In other words, the plot is about we being the ones fucking up Earth and God is to blame for that. I honestly think this movie is worth the time anyone might spend thinking about it
>>87826966
>>87826998
Wow. Just wow. So powerful, so deep, so subtle, so thought-provoking. Obviously plebs just don't get it. I see no reason why this won't get all the Oscars next year.
>>87830751
you could argue there's no point in fighting climate change since either way the world will get restarted again no matter what happens to it
>>87836561
> God is to blame for creation
That sounds retarded. Hes just inserted a duality that has no place in Christianity.
How could God be to blame anything? He is the whole reason for being. To deny him is to deny creation itself.
>>87836646
>That sounds retarded. Hes just inserted a duality that has no place in Christianity.
>How could God be to blame anything? He is the whole reason for being. To deny him is to deny creation itself.
Yeah, well, liberal's take on Christianity. I've met lots of Christians that say stuff like "I believe in God but in my own way. No, I've never read the Bible or anything, but still." This outrages me, and I'm a fucking atheist.
In any case, maybe I've been tainted by /pol/ or something, but I'd say the whole thing is about God being a male figure that doesn't care about the consequences of his actions (Creation) on the protagonist female figure (Mother Earth). This should please the SJW feminist audience and all that shit, but they seem to not like it. Maybe because at the end, Mother forgives God and everything restarts. Or maybe I'm misreading something
>>87831431
>Actually using the word fap
Man are you honestly 13-15
>>87836810
You know, people have written fiction which parrallels the bible over the centuries. The diffrence being that they had an understanding of it.
This sounds like the plot of a japanese anime where everything is lost in translation.
>>87835985
Not to this degree, this movie beats you over the head with its metaphor relentlessly to the point where nothing else matters
>>87829534
I have only seen In The Cut and it was absolutely terrible.
>>87826966
>>87826998
>a jew makes another movie shitting on Christians and shilling for climate change

>>87836926
I don't think Kon ever made a allegorical film about religion, so i don't know why Darren did.

>>87834790
maybe he went to go fap
>>87841034

The people that want the bible taught in school are the ones burning books.
>>87841036
why leave?
>>87830428
>No art is conservative at the time of its invention
Well no, that's definitely not true. Astronomically untrue if you count literature, but even just counting paintings that's untrue.
>>87841096
I always assumed Comparative Religion was taught in all schools. Since the majority of the world believes in some god or another, it sorta makes sense to learn what they are all about. But I guess only people who can read care about that sort of thing (i.e. no one in America).
Well now I want to see it.
>>87841219
You should have wanted to see it when you saw who was directing, pleb.
Without memeing, this is the biggest troll movie ever I've seen in cinema.
The clash of what people were expecting and what happens in 3rd act is the actual kino experience. You see in real time people going WTF at the movie.
>>87831938
TELL YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO HEAR MY WORDS
>>87830751
Except climate change is real. Whether it's man-made is irrelevant. Or are you telling me that 65 million years ago there wasn't more oxygen on Earth? Shit changes, son. Whether humanity is contributing to it is the question.
>>87840968
Yes because we all know whenever people are attacking the concept of "God" they're going after Judaism.
Stop being so utterly cucked by the hooknosed desert tribe.

>>modern art is liberal
Modern art is such a wide ass net, no it's not.
>>rococo is liberal
A bit small relative to the others, and man people hate baroque form on here more than expected. Also not sure the movement literally called "old fashioned" is the liberal movement you're looking for.
>>shit
Why? You hate Satie that much?
All in all these posts all have the same problem, they identify with shit twice removed from what they actually think because they mold the word "liberal" and "conservative" to mean anything, and even when it is appropriate they ignore that it's not appropriate for their liberal or conservative.
>>87841850
>Ni**er
Back to /b/, please.
>>87841295
It's only trolling absolute retards who can't grasp the concept of allegory. Pretty remarkable considering how heavy handed the film is.
>>87836077
We don't put up with any shit like you faggots do.
>>87825094
I would normally call you out on this and say you are full of crap even without having seen the movie first.
After Noah i just can´t do that anymore...
>>87841966
You're not seeing the big picture here.
People went to the theaters to watch a jumpscare horror flick and found themselves with a movie that's literally too deep for normies, even if it's anything special. That's why they're confused and angry
>>87841621
Reddit response. We all know when liberals talk about climate change they don't mean the natural ebb and flow of our planetary climate.
>>87841175
Fuck off, religicuck.

WHAT THEY MEAN, WHAT THEY SAY
>>87842059

I agree with the importance of teaching religions as part as cultural education but you shouldn't look down on others when making mistakes like
>in America
.
It was marketed wrong and had brutal violence.
the general public hates both.
This wasnt as bad as moonlight or shit bad like glitter
Itll get pirated like crazy tho
