Of those I've only seen or heard of Black Robe, which is great BTW.

There are so many Western movies about Indians, but we know by then the Indians are mostly powerless and finished, and they're no real mystery anymore. It's just unified whitey rolling over the defeated and the doomed.

But early colonial North America has to be one of the most fascinating times/places in history: so many sides fighting against each other in complex shifting alliances across a largely empty and beautiful wilderness (that we know in retrospect is destined to be the most important region of the modern world).

It's a fascinating time period. I would recommend reading the book series, the Leatherstocking Tales, that this movie is based on, but it's a bit dated in terms of narrative and pacing and style. It's very long too, but these books were wildly popular in the US when they were released, so much so that they were depicted in many forms of 18th Century American art. This painting by the Hudson River School master Thomas Cole depicts the climax of the Last of the Mohicans. The public just ate it up, James Fenimore Cooper became a very, very wealthy man due to their success

Gunstock war club.

When the natives first saw Europeans with guns, and their magical killing ability, they fashioned weapons to look the same (cargo cult style) but without appreciating the operating mechanic.
>>
>>87824005
>cargo cult style
For real? Amazing. And yeah, now I see the similarity in shape, but he's holding/handling it completely different... how did they develop this technique if they were trying to copy the magic of guns?

Re: colonial America, the Pocahontas story has been done a million times to death (and never well afaik).

Somewhat later time period but I'm surprised a movie has never been made about Tecumseh (afaik).
>>
>>87824085
Presumably they already were fighting with clubs with blades in them, the difference is only slight.

Plus I doubt it was a popular weapon since they quickly got lots of guns of their own.

>>87824005
I musta skipped right over its mention above. Dope!

Now I have to make one of these bad boys for myself and murder some LARPers (never bring foam swords to a gunstock warclub fight, motherfuckers!)
>>
>>87824085
People back then had a lot less information, a lot fewer people to discuss things with, and a lot less not-getting-shot-at interaction with Europeans than you'd think.

They just mapped the things they knew (knife/club fighting) onto the understandable parts of the weird superweapon (musket stocks).
>>
>>87824184
There was an East German movie about Tecumseh in the 70s but otherwise it is definitely a very forgotten period, which is a shame. Tecumseh's war is a fascinating period. Many Americans were named after Tecumseh, including William Tecumseh Sherman

Every other thing in the Midwest and middle Canada is named after Tecumseh (particularly odd when he fought the US: you know you're respected af when your enemies fall over themselves honoring you). Definitely had the most impact of any Native American on world history unless I'm forgetting someone (not a high bar), yet he's totally overlooked today.

On reflection I think his story would make a better tv series than a movie: way too much to pack into a movie.
>>
>>87820679
Interestingly enough Michael Mann apparently found the book especially triggering because of how the colonists were portrayed as righteous or something
>>
>>87824635
I agree, it's too complex to form into a 3 hour story, you would need a television series to really flesh out the political atmosphere of the time period and which countries sided with whom and for what reasons. Americans have a very short memory and few people are even aware of the atmosphere leading up to the Civil War, let alone 50 years prior.
>>
>>87824946
I'm no SJW, but he kind of has a point. Though Cooper does honor the Native tribes in many ways, the Leatherstocking series is essentially about a man who is able to live among both the savage Natives and the refined, civilized colonists. But that was the mentality of the time period. It was completely non-controversial when it came out and even society's most liberal and progressive members of the time widely loved it.

Curious: was there any political reaction when Apocalypto came out (I didn't note it).

On the one hand it shows the brutality pre-contact mesoameriva (not inaccurately) so I'd think it'd 'trigger' a lot of people, but on the other hand the entire cast are native Americans and the whole movie is in a native language, and the characters are normal humans not stereotypes. Plus Mel Gibson.

Also an incredible movie of course.

I'm not sure. My gut feeling says no. Magua was a forward thinking man. His path may not have been the Huron way, but his way would've given the Huron strength and the ability to compete with the white man. Sachem's solution was to sit by and do nothing, and now they're limited to reservations. I daresay Magua did nothing wrong.

A couple times on Erie, Ontario, and I believe Lake Champlain. The painting is from the battle of Lake Erie in the war of 1812 which is where the "we have met the enemy and he is ours" meme comes from. Crucial to the Tecumseh (put him on the back foot and ultimately led to the battle that got him killed).

But before you go down that irrelevant rabbit hole, let me point out that one guy who fought in the revolutionary war may have been a Muslim. Woke.

To add- the other tribes hated the hell out of the blackfoot. Browning is a shithole (where the blackfeet have their reservation) and the Salish-Kootenai (where they have a reservation) have a veritable paradise. Guess which one knew how to trade with white people, or else was peaceful?

I'm half cree/cherokee and the other half is French. The Cree were as stupid as the Blackfoot and they barely exist now. White people are actually FOR retaining the culture of the native population. Unless you want to kil them.

We saw your Navy, and raised you an air force.

The Russians thought a massive army was a good idea. That was proven to pure idiocy in the Gulf War. We had a massive stable of tank killers in our air force just for dealing with Russian tank battalions.

Thanks dad.

He fought well, the ambush scene where he ducks then takes out a native with a club, fucking perfect.

>They would say that it shows that the French got along better with their native mercenaries and were therefore more justified in taking over the New World.
But it's true

Daniel Day-Lewis is a tier of his own amongst method actors.

While filming Gangs of New York he caught pneumonia and almost died. He didn't want any medication or antiobiotics or anything because "they didn't have that in the 1860s".
