Episode two comes tomorrow, and I, for one, cannot wait. Let's chat about the greatest Star Trek show since Voyager.
>>87817671
It's okay, I'll give it a chance, more technobable and more world building. Less cuck drama and more comfortable sets and I'd be okay.
Inb4 the reason she asked for him to Captain is because a time paradox needed him too.
>>87817671
Nice try, Seth
>>87817763
It will have none of that.
>>87817671
>Let's chat about the greatest Star Trek show since Voyager.
I personally think Archer is a pretty good Captain. T'Pol is pretty hot for a vulcan.
>>87817671
It's garbage. The 'comedy' is not funny and it ruins it. Also, all of the characters are the same, except Seth's character and his ex-wife. Everyone else is a 2010s Western person stuck on a space ship.
I'd even go so far as to say it's the greatest Star Trek show since Enterprise.
>>87817671
How do they make his eyes look so tiny? CGI?
The bridge looks like a 90s kitchen showroom. So just like Star Trek then
>>87817763

That would remove a major inconsistency with the show.

Isaacs, 54, said the new show will throw away the legacy of William Shatner and Patrick Stewart – and expects it to upset die hard Trekkies.
“I don't mean to sound irreverent when I say I don't care about the die-hard Trek fans,” he told us at an event in Los Angeles. “I only ‘don't care’ about them in the sense that I know they’re all going to watch anyway. I look forward to having the fun of them being outraged, so they can sit up all night and talk about it with each other.”
Isaacs says that the new “Star Trek” will be a reflection of our own world, which is something he has a hard time discussing with his own children right now.
“I don't know how to explain the anarchy and chaos," he said, citing America’s suddenly intolerant position on immigration as an example. “One of the things I can do as a storyteller is be part of stories that hold up a vision for the future where we just do better.”

He literally does nothing. He explains once that his planet and people are racist and then does nothing racist for the rest of the episode.
Single gender guy was better with his straight man act (although it's weird to explicitly claim he is a male, that classification makes no sense in a single gender species. They're either hermaphrodites or they reproduce asexually.)

You can't claim it's a good character if he hasn't done anything worthwhile yet. It's a pretty bad sign if they can't think of a single good line for him in the episode that is supposed to sell the show. No snide remark, no muttered insult, there were opportunities but it's like the writers were scared to take them like they have ration the few jokes they thought of across the whole season.
>>87818970
If you talking about STD I agree. Not showing it to critics
http://screenrant.com/star-trek-discovery-reviews-embargo/
Add that they are killing the story after the 1st season for anther one. The whole we planned it that way BS is just sad. That came after they removed the real fans and put in the SJW marking guys as head writers. I hope the second season with the wrath of khan writer goes better. I really want both shows to be good. Only, I not paying to see gay black 110lb SJW Mary Sue fight Pro-Trump (writers said this) Klingons. The Qrville is free and that makes not have to be great, just watchable.

Holy shit. They're not showing Star Trek Discovery to critics? That seems like really bad news. Doesn't that usually mean the film or show is REALLY bad? Why wouldn't they show it to critics? I like them setting out that this is seen as work to the crew. When he going over the helmsman's great record. He asks why this ship and the guy asks about being able to drink pop at his work space. I like that the helmsmen are clearly being set up as the dudes that fuck up

Kind of a shitty first episode.
The sequence where seth goes through the roster of his senior officers kind of reminded me of that part of the first episode of DS9 where Odo basically turns to the camera and says "hi, my character arc is that I don't know anything about my species", it's a bizarre and conspicuous way of introducing characters

Honestly it's the complete opposite of Discovery. Discovery is virulently ant-white, anti-male and anti-hetero delivered over a droning humorless SJW narrative. Orville is the direct opposite of this in almost every way. A white male cis heterosexual captain having adventures with attractive white hetero females on his crew.

I think the idea that we're living in a "golden age of television" has ruined the opportunity for networks to air shows that are just meant to be enjoyed at a basic level. It seems that everyone expects a show to offer some great insight into the human condition, have an abstract/byzantine plot that slowly untangles as the series progresses, and/or offer incisive political commentary.
>your face whenRoger the Alienmakes a cameo and becomes a reoccurring character and love interest

A CUTE!
>>87823744
Agreed. It's nice to have something episodic and light hearted that gets, if a little clumsily, at the idea of star trek. Ironically and based only on promo stuff, ST:D doesn't seem to understand that exploration and discovery, not progressivism, is the heart of the series
>>87823975
I wonder what her breath smells like
>>87818970
No. I can't fathom how the PR team bungled this so bad. Though to be fair there is nothing visual they could show because it's all so fucked up as to be unrecognizable as Star Trek.
Show is honestly a big pile of meh. Most of it lies in how it can't decide to be a comedy with dramatic elements or a drama with quips.
But still, it's not as bad as critics are panning it to be, this is harmless, unmemorable tv as it gets. Will stick for the next two episodes to see if it gets better, but not really crazy about it.
Also, >>87823975
>>87823246
why is the devil in orville
First episode ratings were good, if it can keep the lion's share of viewers come sunday then things are looking rosy.
A massive drop would probably be disastrous though.
There's nothing redeeming about that first ep. It feels like they really wanted to make a cartoon parody of ST but midway decided to make an actual live-action space drama using the same shallow carbon-copy ST characters. The action sequences are even more retarded than ST. A small away team with hand phasers and 1 combat expert somehow massacres a whole platoon of alien soldiers. At least Trek would have had some of the personnel killed or the team captured from the jump. Oh we have a cutie-pie security head who can fucking break down walls and fly like Supergirl. The jokes just feel out-place. Maybe it will get better but it has a huge hill to climb.

probably not

I found the look of it to be classic Star Trek'ky, from there on it's downhill. The jokes were crap, Set MacFarlane can't even act decently enough to deliver a oneliner without missing the timing, and none of the other characters were remotely interesting.

I actually liked it too. Granted, the comedy could be reined in more (the evil alien talking about relationships was dumb), but some of the bits were genuinely funny. The overall tone was comfy and TNG-esque, even down to the Data and Worf substitutes. If they focus more on sci fi and less on comedy in future episodes then I think the show will have a great run.

It seems to be a fun show. It probably won't bet the greatest show ever, but being that it was fun to watch, and I enjoyed watching the characters - fun to watch counts for a lot these days.
I've noticed Seth's captain character gets irritated quickly with distractions.
There was sort of a geek mentality running gag in the show, an attitude as if:"I don't give a shit, I just want to get drunk or high.", which seemed echoed throughout.

When Americans realised their country is falling apart, while working more hours, getting paid less, while the cost of living rises steadily.
Living conditions are declining fast, so for example when your house starts to fall apart from the inside, you're in no mood to take on more guests who do not plan to pay rent while increasing job loss.

I like it. Well, I don't hate it. I'm going to give it a few more before I decide to stick with it or drop it.
I'd prefer about 25-50% less "comedy" and just about anyone but Seth MacFarlane as the lead... BUT that said it's got great production value (hopefully they didn't blow their wad on the pilot) and it's just fun competent mainstream Sci-Fi. I actually welcome this kind of Sci-Fi because it means more quality niche stuff will get greenlighted as a result.
>>87827198
I don't think anyone's living conditions are really declining. They just don't want to work.

You haven't even seen discovery. What does this show do that makes it more "cannon" than Discovery?

The critics gave it mediocre reviews, which it was. It's not good at being star trek sci-fi, and it's not good at being funny. it goes for both but can't do either.

It was an apolitical question because the whole reason this discussion started is because the Star Trek guy was talking about how Trump got people all riled up about immigration. So the question is what exactly people think Trump is going to do to fix their living conditions.
I certainly get what you're saying but it can be a bit hard to believe when every attempt at discussion of the matter is met with "Haha we won you lost and you are mad." Apparently there is much confusion over what is a Trump, or anti-Trump thing.
Personally I don't give a fuck about Trump, and yet I am pissed off about the kind of apolitical SJW shit I see going on. SJWs believing they're fighting the good fight just because their fight is projected as fulfilling the needs of the many.
Honestly I've seen so many different arguments in so many different directions that I can agree that it is confusing.
Immigrants? That's a complicated subject that is NEVER like most subjects handled honestly.
America was a huge melting pot for a long time, but near the late 60's when computers began taking away jobs America's surplus for needing more external workers ended.
America no long needed workers from other countries, but of course that never stopped the flow. Much of what has happened since then has been a slow drain that's now grown to giant river - ocean size problems which has happened so slow that most don't notice.
For a long time media has old us what to think and how to think, and people are frustrated as they're working longer hours, getting less money, unable to save money, and cost of living rising steadily unable to keep up.
So why are people outraged about media concerns over immigrants, transgenders, minority race issues?
Because they don't give a shit and see it as the distraction is it, and want people to STFU about it, because the real problem is a country falling apart from the inside that no one seems to care about.

>>87830304
>if it's bad, then I know it's good
What did he mean by this?
>The Orville is already being criticized. The show apparently has an episode coming up about sex reassignment surgery. And based on the reviews so far, people are wondering if that episode will even make it to air.
>Vox's Caroline Framke writes that an upcoming episode will address the possibility of "an alien baby getting sexual reassignment surgery." BuzzFeed's Kate Aurthur confirms the storyline is included in The Orville's third episode.
>"The way this episode plays out makes it one of the most transparent and least necessary takes on the vast complexities of gender," Framke writes. "The episode, written by MacFarlane, clearly thinks it’s shedding light and nuance on a fraught topic; it's unclear if MacFarlane, a straight cis white guy, consulted anyone other than himself on said topic. But I would be shocked to discover that was the case, since the episode just ends up reciting bullet points too simplistic even for the transgender Wikipedia entry, and letting characters exchange the same basic arguments in scene after excruciating scene."

>It's garbage. The 'comedy' is not funny and it ruins it.
Not that Star Trek had good comedy. I honestly feel like the shitty comedy is just in there to justify the "parody" angle and the reason this got made.
IIRC he tried to pitch a serious scifi drama several times but couldn't make it happen because he's the "family guy guy". This is his attempt to backdoor it I guess.
>>87825311
>>Seth Macfarlane's idea of comedy is to have a dog in the background licking its balls
>You literally cannot make this shit up.
If anything that's highbrow for Seth. I think the forced comedy angle isn't really what he wanted but it'll kill the drama part of the show too. Half-hearted """""jokes""""" in the middle of his take-me-seriously drama bits will just be ass.

Quite seriously IP rights are like cancer and yes, you get vast room to protect it, including the general "feel" of sets and setting.
Sci fi is an old genre and Star Trek is an old IP so many other properties have already stepped on this ground making it harder to defend, but Orville is close enough that it's probably trying to use the parody comedy thing as a shield. Because you are allowed to parody. If Orville was serious they'd likely be sued.

>this
It's a non funny parody of star trek. I'm guessing seth wanted to be in star trek, was btfo'd, decided to make his own with his family guy money.
A genuine review, The details of the technology, characters and races are spoon fed directly after they appear. "Hello, alien named x, from a planet that does x, how's that x going that does x?" This is basically the whole show. There's no attempt at creative dialogue, it's blunt and linear, predictable. When you see the ship, a feeling of, "wait that's literally a star trek ship," comes to mind. The characters are cheap rip offs, with a female worf, a robot that's suppose to be spock, but the slap stick parody jokes akin to spaceballs, or a weird al song never come. You watch seth struggle to act, without his family guy funny voices gag he uses when doing public appearances. I give it 2 episodes before he has to desperately use a family guy voice for a normie applause.
There's nothing creative, original or good about it, it's about a guy who bought a show, revolved it around himself, parodied a bland scifi series, and most likely will be full of giant space penises, or on some tier of childishness.
