I liked it
>>
Heck yeah. CBS can suck a dong!
>>
I haven't watched it, but I probably should. I don't mind Seth's humor but it can be hit or miss. The real charm this show will have is Seth's huge boner for Star Trek. That guy is a huge fan, and I would really enjoy to essentially see his version of the show. I think he respects the source material too much to make a cheap shitty "funny" version of Star Trek.
>>
Actually not as bad as I expected and I fucking hate seth macfarlane. Will probably watch a couple more episodes
>>
>>87673589
I did too man. I'll admit the first episode was average with stupid jokes but you could see glimpses of a potentially good show.
>>
>>87673650
Basically the reason why I tuned into the show. The fate of the show relies on the ability of Seth to write. I'm not sure if he can do it or not.
>>
>>87673650
The show is really much more like TOS/TNG Star Trek than it is like Family Guy or Ted

>>87673589
Same here. It was pretty fun, and the jokes didn't get too obnoxious or feel out of place.
I'm looking forward to seeing how racist they'll let the robot get.
>>87673650
It was pretty respectable to Trek stuff, though I like how they're making it feel more casual and not taking themselves too seroiusly, like the black dude drinking a coke while flying the ship. It was a small thing, and not really 'that' funny, but it worked, also the thing with the hot glue.
I'm wondering how much fun they'll end up poking at Trek as it goes along, like mentioning the one bathroom thing or something.
Good start so far.
>>
>>87673228
I think the show's biggest problem is that Seth is the lead character. If he cast someone else I don't think the ratings would be as bad.
>>
>>87673228
Those are some pretty mediocre ratings.

This show will get canceled soon.
>>
"Seth is a bad actor" is a new CBS talking point btw. Expect to see variations on this posted endlessly by CBS in the days leading to the launch of STD.
>>
>NBC won the night with a 6.5 and 17.7 million viewers.

Dayum! NBC completely annihilated FOX
>>
Y'know what this show legitimately needs?

The writers that saved American Dad; The writers that left Futurama.

Seth is a legitimately bad actor. This has been cited in everything he has done, from Ted to a Million Ways to Die. The guy just can't act. He's painful to watch on screen. Every moment is cringe worthy.

LEL

This show did just a bit better than the latest season of Big Brother, a shit reality show that nobody cares about.
>>

It looks like a parody of ST but it's boring, unfunny and played straight, with an awful divorce drama. Looks like a bootleg Star Trek.

>>

It was pretty decent and has potential. For a pilot it was good.

Once the universe is expanded and the characters are allowed to flanderize it could be amazing.

>>
>>87680896
Since there is 400 channels to watch, and the show doesn't cost that much, it is a success.

About 7.32 million people watched the show. It going up vs. Sunday night football which is a huge rating monster so that a great result.

>>
>>87673228
/tv/ was right we clearly recognized it as the kino it is
>>
>>87673228
Now watch as ratings drop to a half of that by the fourth episode.
>>
>>87681329
That's because futuristic props are a trope, and this subverts it. Remember how McCoy's medical instruments were originally artsy-fartsy salt shakers? They actually got plain old salt shakers out of the cafeteria to be salt shakers in that salt monster episode.

This is something that was spray-painted to pimp it up to look like a futuristic prop, while still being clearly recognizable as a glue gun with a CO2 cartridge up its ass, and a few coats of Krylon on top. Subverting tropes is high comedy, and the pilot episode is hinting that that's exactly what we're going to get..
>>
>>87681144

doesn't syfy earn via cable subscriptions instead of advertising revenue like the networks? networks look at ratings because advertisers look at ratings to decided whether to buy ad space in a show or not.
>>
>>87673228
I feel like this is gonna need a season to hit it's stride, but I doubt Fox will give it a chance.

I noticed that in the past two days, someone removed the RT link from The Orville wikipedia page. I was amused.
>>
>>87673650
I kinda can't stand his face. Like literally his actual face. Even so, the pilot was pretty strong. Some of the jokes were a little forced, but the actual plot was shockingly like something from a real Trek episode. It didn't feel like a parody plot.

Super interested in seeing more of the big alien dude who took control of the bridge. In the trailers I thought he'd just be a lame Klingon ripoff to bounce jokes off of, but he came off more thoughtful and closer to a Vulcan. That robot design is neat to, its riding that razor edgy between corny and fitting to the setting.
>>
I thought this was fucking great. The jokes were a little stiff but it was damn fun. Don't really get the horrible reviews.

That's the thing though. The first episode will premiere to big numbers. Then it disappears behind the paywall where no one ever discussed whatever system streaming sites use for "ratings" and the SJWs will get to screech about how successful STD was. Fuck this shit.

However, there is a work around. Voyager premiered to 25 million viewers and is generally viewed as bad Trek. Enterprise premiered to 15 million viewers and is generally viewed as even worse Trek. If STD isn't hitting 15 to 25 million for that premiere, it's dead comparatively.

>Enterprise premiered to 15 million viewers and is generally viewed as even worse Trek

Many other factors were involved in the fact that Enterprise got "poor" ratings. DS9 and Voyager had already turned off the fans to Star Trek. Then Enterprise, which is actually the very best Star Trek ever produced, was released on UPN, where it was nearly overwhelmed with so many extended, annoying, hawking, commercial breaks, some of which appeared as "screen boogers" durring the show itself, that it made the show very difficult, if not impossible, to follow.

Critics must really, really hate MacFarlane for these reviews to make sense.

I can actually see this being successful. It's fun. Making the characters less stoic makes it feel more modern. Best new Star Trek in a decade-and-a-half.

Feels better realised than Abram's Star Trek, in part because they aren't ruining classic characters at the same time.

Ignore total viewers. you want A18-49 numbers. It did 2.8 in A18-49, so 2.8% of adults aged 18-49 watched it.

That's a good start, even though it will be inflated by its football lead-in. It premiered better than any new broadcast show last year and it did significantly better than Son of Zorn, which aired in the same slot last year, even though it aired for an hour rather than 30 minutes, which gives people more of an opportunity to tune out after football.

A good start is a good thing - as it isn't DOA - but you'll have to wait a few weeks to find out if has any chance of getting renewed. High-concept shows like this tend to be easy to promote but people tune out after a few weeks.
>>
You all realize that if this show keeps going that pretty much every Star Trek actor is going to get a cameo of some sort, right?
>>
>>87689639
18-49s are the ones who spend the most money on the products being advertised during the show, or what? Are ratings further broken down into income brackets amongst that group? How does this work?

National primetime TV advertisers generally buy based on 18-49 ratings. The logic behind it is somewhat tortured and rationalised bullshit, but the rough idea is that they have spending power, are less likely to be fixed in their ways, and don't watch as much other forms of media so they're harder to reach (think: old people like news shows and Wheel of Fortune, people aged 18-49 people don't).

Nielsen, who generate the ratings, provides tons of demographic info broken down into income brackets etc. TV advertisers do pay more for richer viewers and younger viewers (e.g. Modern Family ad rates were higher than TBBT for a long time because they were richer and harder-to-reach younger viewers despite TBBT getting significantly more viewers total and in A18-49), but in practice the A18-49 figure is what's the most important.

That's why The Walking Dead makes a shitload of money. It gets crazy ratings from a ton of young people.

ENT's ratings dropped to the same level of VOY viewership after its premier and it followed the same downward trend that started with DS9. People were just sick of Star Trek and UPN's meddling didn't help at all. UPN canceled the series because Star Trek is expensive to produce, UPN was going bankrupt and there was no way ENT was going to get back up to TNG level ratings. ENT was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That's the frustrating part about Orville. There's potential for a great sci-fi series but it has to be a parody to avoid lawsuits. They either have to dramatically rewrite the entire idea or fill it with jokes to get past "fair use", and they don't seem to have very many good jokes to work with.
>>
>>87690039
The downward trend was virtually replicated across all of TV though. Shit, here we are in a thread where getting 7 or 8 million people to watch the premiere of your new show is somehow good. It wasn't that long ago that this many viewers would doom your show if that's all you got for a premiere.

I mean, yes, but Enterprise's ratings dropped like a fucking rock which is why it was cancelled. The show haemorrhaged viewers in its first year, losing 2/3rds of its premiere audience, and then kept dropping further in subsequent years. That's why it was cancelled.
>>
>>87690376
>I mean, yes, but Enterprise's ratings dropped like a fucking rock
Again, that's wrong. ENT's ratings literally continued the same downward pattern started by DS9. The premiers for DS9, VOY and ENT would spike and then the subsequent episodes would go back to the same downward trend. Star Trek, as a franchise, was rapidly losing viewership from the moment TNG ended. ENT got canceled because UPN wanted TNG level viewership and that wasn't going to happen.
>>
>>87690520
No, that's not wrong. Paramount didn't expect TNG viewers, they just wanted a viable show on a reasonable budget.

Enterprise was getting lower ratings on UPN than their black sitcoms (Girlfriends, Half and Half etc), Everwood and 7th Heaven at many times the cost.

Literally the only two ways I could argue against this statement is by bringing up canon differences, and that the Orville seems to be mostly staffed by people who don't care about proper ethiquette as much as usually on Star Trek, and neither of those are valid.

Depending on how the rest of the series goes, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being a Star Trek flavoured version of pic related.

Just remember that most critics are art school level of retarded and would grade some edgy canvas smeared in period blood better than a high quality realistic paintpainting because the former "pushed the bounderies" or some shit. All while all most people want is a cool painting to hang in their room.

She's still an affirmative action hire.

I just hope they tone down the suicidal angle this season. Maybe focusing on revenge will help it.

I can imagine some kind of "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" plot twist that requires the crew to go into musical numbers for diplomacy with the aliens of the week. It's even scary how well that could work. That's the kind of humor they seem to be shooting for, parodying the tropes.

I'd like to have copies of the incomplete preview episodes (after watching the final version) just for completeness.

>>stronk independent woman is better than the captain in every way.

You say that because of his one comment? Are you not familiar with the term 'better half'?

>>could be the captain herself but chooses not to
>>complete Mary Sue

You should look up the meaning of a Mary Sue.

>>fucking cheats on her husband but he's the bad guy because she can't do anything wrong.

No one in the show said he was, in fact they were quite sympathetic to him. She even said she was very much in the wrong. Does apologizing make her a Mary Sue?

DS9 is god tier though. It is undeniably the best Trek.

I still haven't figured out the point behind the spinoff. The only reason I haven't dropped Galaxy Tylor is because the episodes are five minutes long.

>ethiquette

Could you elaborate? I feel like if the cast of TNG had a few lazy days with nothing happening (think of all the time spent traveling) there would be plenty of slightly inappropriate bantz.

No, I was replying to you faggot.

I seem to recall that the difference was with par2 you could generate more segments later. Anyhow, enough parts mysteriously disappeared that it was not possible to assemble a complete episode.

Would be kinda funny to have her kick ass in combat and then screw up sometimes during normal day to day stuff.

One of my only problems with the show is it looks like they haven't sorted out the crew's duties in the scripts yet. She's Chief of Security but was hailing the other ship. I would think either the robot or #2 would handle that.

Would be cool to have an episode that was just them getting sent on a mission a long ways away and instead of cutting to the planet after a commercial break the entire episode is them travelling and coming up with ways to break the boredom.
