They should've just told an alternative story and given the Death Note to some random person in 'Murica that's not called Light. Sort of like a "what if"-scenario. The movie would be much better that way because it admits that it doesn't even WANT to be like the original.
If they wanted to make a 'murican live action adaption they should've gone with a TV series that sticks more to the source material. Just 10 episodes would've been enough to tell the whole story in it's entirety.

As for Death Note 2.
It turns out L killed Light in the end by writing his name down. Ryuk gives the Death Note to some completely diffrent person - and then - see the beginning of this post.
