Americans always want to be richer. What you have doesn't matter, only what you COULD have.

That house is dirt cheap in America. He probably put 25k or something down on it.

They were TV poor. Most TV shows about poor people have the characters living well above their supposed means, it's why Shameless gets so much praise for trying to show characters actually being poor.

The Simpsons writers were aware of it enough to make jokes about it in the Frank Grimes episode.
>>

Why are you speaking English then? Speak American..... oh wait
>>
>>87531623
>a bathroom is any room with a sink and a toliet
That's the American system, though. I thought you guys only called rooms with a shower or bath a bathroom, and rooms with only a toilet a toilet. I know several Brits who have acted confused when I asked about a "bathroom" and they figured out I was really asking for the toilet.
>>
>>87531201
It is a decent sized kitchen, but I don't now why they wouldn't make the adjacent room a dining room. Its not like they ever use the den for anything.
>>
>>87531829
English is complex lad, if you want to use the toliet you ask for the toliet. You dont ask for the bathroom

If you're talking real estate you use "Full" and "Half" to describe the bathrooms. A half-bath is what you call a sink and a toilet, a full is with a shower or bath tub.
Access to running water and a basin means you CAN technically bathe in it. Wash your face, hands, freshen up, etc.

My childhood best friend's parents were sort of a real-life version of Homer and Marge: his mom was pretty hot, and his dad was fat, drunken idiot who struggled to hold down a decent job. When they were teenagers, he was a cool, rebellious rocker, and they got married when she got pregnant with my friend. They ended up getting divorced when he turned 18.

the two floor plan images are different with regards tot he upstairs hall bath and that room.

in the cartoon looking image. the "room" is just part of the bathroom. you enter that room and then step into the bathroom.

in the floor plan image. that empty room is a linen closet. a small walk in closet where you keep bed linens, blankets, etc. the hall bath is entered directly from a different point.

both OP's image and the other floor plan image are not accurate to the house is presented on teh show.

It was originally written in the late 80s/early 90s when a home was far more affordable to your average middle class earner. It was kept like that because The Simpsons don't age or change circumstance.

they live in illinois in a suburban home. Something like that would only cost like 100k which would mortage out at like $600-700 a month depending on how much you put down to start with. If I live in or near a major city I have no end of work to choose from, it makes no sense to move out into the middle of nowhere for cheaper property if it means cutting my opportunities down to basically nothing.

4 bedroom, 2 story house with a garage for $105,000 in Peoria illinois
>>
>>87534096
That's actually not how it works. Property values are high in urban areas on account of property scarcity. Look at what that gets you in most of Brooklyn, what most of them do for a living, how many are packed into a single (illegally) subdivided apartment, and tell yourself it's on account of "good jobs".
>>
Whats it like living in a 2 story house?

>>87534372

>>
>>87534372

>>
>>87534301
I didn't say "good jobs" I said jobs in general. It's much easier to find work if you have little or no education in the city than in some podunk town. I'm not even sure why you find this hard to believe considering there's nothing mysterious about it. There's simply a fraction of the number of businesses in a small town compared to the city, there's simply that many fewer employment opportunities in a small town, especially those that require little or no education/skills. In a big city you can hardly walk down the streets without passing several "help wanted" signs for fast food or retail, and if you have no real skills or education those are the kinds of jobs you need.

It's kind of cool. Keeps you in shape trekking up stairs frequently. Most fat people aim to go upstairs as infrequently as possible. Gives you an excellent defensive position. If the bedroom is upstairs it's easy to make it the last room you hit on the tour with the girl.

Other than that it's not much.

First of all, people in trades don't work nearly as hard as you think. They have specialized knowledge and that is what makes them valuable. If you think working long hours or doing technical work is "working hard" we have a semantic issue. Working hard is labor, unskilled manual labor. And even that pays very well, typically again because of union bargaining (in the US anyway).

I for one just work retail, I need very little money, I don't take vacations. My car is paid for with cash. I live simply and earn little, working in an air-conditioned building shooting the shit with people who are technically my inferiors but are officially my peers. It's comfy.

No, I'm mad because anyone smart enough would realize that she kept her entire family in poverty, possibly for generations, by turning this down. Most of them are so wrecked they are unlivable, unsuitable for any purpose, subject to squatters because of their perpetual unoccupied status. They generate no value but the property owner is still responsible for any sort of hooliganism, etc. as well as annual taxes, whatever they may be.

They are worthless because they must be bulldozen and redeveloped, and no one is doing that in Detroit because no one is moving there because there is no reason to move there. It is a dead city in obvious disarray, on the verge of collapse.

You can have a house and barely be scraping by. People live within their means and don't have very much in terms of liquidity.

Homer's problem was that all of his earnings, like most people, went into his bills and family. It's also not supposed to be realistic. The episode where Grimy visits his house and mentions how it's incredible he can afford it, how it's a castle, is a reference to the cartoon logic.

lives in Springfield near a cemetery and a town with a nuclear power plant that melts down every other ep and has 1 quicki mart and 1 bar.

his home is no more than 12k. He has about four mortgages and was probably given those under lies and deception based on his shifting position in the nuclear power plant (employee, safety inspector, union organizer, sometimes he was smithers).

You can easily imagine he's up to his eyeballs in serious debt and pays his mortgage haphazardly. If two or three banks are offering him these mortgages without realizing the other mortgages exist, who gets the house? It's pretty easy for them to continue to send 'warnings' instead of duking it out over which mortgage is 'legitimate'.

He also started a dozen or so businesses and went to clown college, nasa, etc. etc. The mr. plow business and the grease business were pretty successful. So he has unknown income and unknown costs and bills.

Also his brother is rich as hell and probably bailed him out once or twice.
