I just saw IT.
This new Pennywise has to be the scariest movie monster I've seen in years. Literally years..
The movie itself seems to capture that 80s feeling we've seen in Stranger Things and other important work. Do your part and see it in theaters.

>>
what are the top 2 most brutal kills/deaths
>>
>>87440065
There are 3 killings in the movie. Outside of that its mostly Pennywise haunting the loser's club and his minions haunting other kids but he wants to find out why Beverly isn't afraid of him. So he ends up kidnapping her and taking her to his lair to figure if she has something special, and there are some kids there that are half eaten.
>>
>>87439094
Shut the fuck up.
>>
>>87439094
Was THE scene in the movie?
>>
>>87440160
No.
The Loser's Club finds Bev catatonic in the sewer and Ben gives her a kiss, like in a fairy tale. That's the closest.
Then she wakes up and is all like LETS KILL THIS FUCKING CLOWN GUYS
and they are motivated and find him and starts laying in to Pennywise until he disappears.
>>
>>87440160

Its very Riot grrrl. Bev is punk and hardcore she can kick ass better than the rest of the loser's club which are kind of nerdy and feel very forced. It makes you wish they had gone with an all female cast instead to have more brave characters.

they hurt children in this film, you gotta admit that takes guts. You ever see children getting killed ONSCREEN before? neither have I .. IT 2017 did it first.
>>
there is no adult part in the movie right? They remain kids and it ends when they kill it the first time from what I hear.

Thats really disappointing, I guess from a film perspective it would be REALLY hard to balance those two parts but I found both to be equally interesting in the mini-series

>>

it's the truth you have to see it to believe it and these kids they got guts and blood going all over the place. When you see a horror film you assume the kids are untouchable or if they are going to die then its going to be offscreen or something really tame but letme reassure you that, that is certainly not the case here.

There are no cheap scares. Pennywise is really hidden throughout and you keep wondering when he will pop up. Much of the fright is wondering if Pennywise will appear. Suddenly he is possessing a projector and you nearly piss yourself. That's the kind of creepy we've never really seen in a horror movie before. It reminds me of Annabelle or Stranger Things, really deep works.

Just got back from seeing it too. It was honestly pretty good. Didn't rely on jump scares as much as the trailers made it seem which was nice. Only real complaint is that even though it had a runtime of 2 hours it still felt like they glossed over some stuff. At the same time, some of the scenes were really well done, like the part with Henry's dad shooting at him. The new Pennywise was definitely creepy, but I wish he kept some of the goofiness of Tim Curry Pennywise.

I just got out of It (ha-ha, puns, whatever). Fucking loved it. Call me a shill, call me a faggot, whatever - it could now be my favorite horror film.

The reason being is that it is that the horror is not the focus of the film. The focus is the characters and relationships. This film was basically "Stand by Me" (another King classic) + the good elements of "Nightmare on Elm Street," with some Spielberg fun and heartwarming stuff (seriously) and unsettling cosmic horror of Lovecraft.

I fucking loved it.

It's very creepy and some parts downright scary, but no, it's not terrifying or horrific. But it's artfully done, creeping and frightening, but overall, it's a great movie about growing up, facing fears, and loss of innocence (a frequent theme of King). Fucking miles ahead of the miniseries, too.

This might rub some the wrong way, but it had a surprisingly Christian theme to it, too? No overt or purposeful, but definitely identifiable. Willing to explain, but was quite surprising

The movie was good. It was not GREAT, but it was fun. The Losers were great, but given the runtime, there were too many of them. With a book of this length, you either have to adapt it heavily or make it a mini-series. I think this would have been amazing if it was an eightish episode mini-series on Netflix or Amazon, but if you're going with the two movie format, there's a lot that you need to scrap.

Stanley and Mike served literally no purpose in this story and could have been omitted entirely. And while I really liked the banter between Eddie and Richie, they probably could have been merged into a single comic relief character, and built up the relationship between Bill and 'Richeddie' to keep some of the sharp dialogue (in which case you'd have to lose the stuttering problem, but that only really plays if you're using the adult-child temporal jumps from the book as a framing device, wherein you show the stuttering coming back years later when the monster re-emerges). Use the extra time freed up to explore the love triangle between Bev/Ben/Bill, or omit Ben altogether and make Bev the new kid, making the love triangle between Bill and Richie. Bev and Bill need to be the primary focus, and their relationship should grow through the journey, but you need time to explore it. In the movie we got, Bev and Ben are set up to be together, then we get a triangle, but ultimately it goes nowhere. I think removing Ben altogether might be the strongest choice, and then have the romantic conflict be the reason for the schism between Bill and Richie, as opposed to having Richie just inexplicably blow up for no good reason at the end of the second act.

The other thing to explore is the relationship between the kids and their parents. It is a major part of demonstrating who these characters are, but the adults in the film feel like cartoon characters who show up for a second to do something awful and then fuck off.

Sure.

So, in Christianity, the Enemy (Satan) is said to prowl around, seeking out those to destroy. "Steal, Kill and Destroy" is what the bible says - steal one's sense of peace, kill their earthly bodies, and destroy all hope they might have. The Enemy feeds on people's fears - it know exactly what will terrify you, and trip you up. It will seek out groups of people (believers and non-believers alike) and try to divide and conquer. If he can weaken the church, he can render it ineffective. This is "It" - Satan himself. Not literally, but they're one in the same. A cosmic, unearthly being who feeds off fear.

The remedy in Christianity is twofold, according to scripture. The love of Christ (obviously) and the fellowship of the church. In "It" the kids are singled out and It exploits their fears and insecurities to terrorize them. Bev, being raped and abused by her father, seeks affections and feels horribly unloved and unwomanly (we see her buying hygiene products, confused and nervous). It appears are a torrent of blood and her rapist father. Eddie is a germaphobe, who feels unclean and is terrified of sickness and, by extension, death. It appears as a leper - disease-ridden, and reeking of death. And, of course, Bill feels such pain in loss of Georgie... and so It appears as the one thing to remind him of the worst pain he'll ever know.

Continued.

>The focus is the characters and relationships

This is the strongest stuff in the movie, but A LOT needs to be trimmed in order for it to play. The strongest thing this movie had going for it was the Losers Club, but unfortunately, they get a bit smothered under the weight of the story. What I did like was that, unlike the previous incarnation, this movie felt like something of a gothic adventure film. It's like a spoopier goonies. The problem is , a lot of the air gets let out every time we have to stop and see another useless character show us something superfluous, like Stanley's painting or the entire bully subplot. All of it was neat on it's own, but unfortunately there was not enough runtime to justify it's inclusion. We needed more time to establish the mythology and the 'rules' of the monster, and more importantly, give the core characters more time to grow.
>>
>>87463770

Patrick gets Pennywise'd when he goes into the sewers looking for Ben to bully him.
If you're talking about that scene in the house, I think it was just supposed to be a generic claw. There weren't any references to Pennywise's spider form in the film.
The water scene actually wasn't that bad. Probably would have been the cheesiest scare if the trailers didn't spoil it though.
>>
>>87463470
>>87463758

In the film, they defeat IT by turning the tables, and consciously making the decision to fear no longer. This angers the Enemy, and when the kids confront him in the cistern, he appears as their fears to them, but as a group, he can only really effect one at a time. When he attacks Bev as her dad, a kid can support her because that doesn't effect him. When he appears as a germ-ridden vomit monster, he is struck by a kid who knows better. It's all about the kids being strong where their brothers are weak.

In the end, the Enemy knows it can't win... and then, HE fears the kids, because with no fear... he starves.

It can't survive when the kids make the decision to stand together, to love together, and to stomp out fear. In Christianity, the Enemy can't stand when the church unites. "Where two or more gather in [Jesus'] name, there I am also" says the bible. "The lord does not give a spirit of fear," it is also written, "but a spirit of love and power." And with that strength, the church wins. The kids win.

It was quite powerful for me, on top of being a great movie in and of itself.

The film ends with them united, and determined. There's no way It is permanently defeated. It will return. But when it does... they stand together. And It cannot win.

So yeah, I really liked it. With all the christian allegory I found in it, personally, the funny part is one of the kids going "JESUS FUCK!" at the end, hah.

1: No, the children that Pennywise killed lure him to a dead end and Pennywise eats him.
2: It's a tease of Pennywise's true form. We also see that he has tentacles and his mouth and throats are covered in teeth, the deadlights come from his throat in this. But we never get to see his true form yet.
3: Nah that was actually really well done in the movie
>>
>>87463770
1. We don't find his corpse or anything like that, but we know he's dead for sure.
2. Nothing really. He was just giving himself claws to attack the kids.
3. On it's own, it looks silly. But then you realize that "YOU'LL FLOAT TOO" Georgie has Pennywise's hand inside of him, as if Georgie were a puppet. He throws Georgie aside and chases after Bill. Bill escapes, and Pennywise just smiles at the basement stairs, disappearing into the dark. Wasn't the scariest scene, but it wasn't funny either.

So what's the deal with the painting woman? Was it just a spooky painting that Stan was creeped out by, or was there supposed to be something more to it? Most of the other fear-based illusions seemed to have a deeper connection to the character, like the fire that killed Mike's parents or Bev's molester dad.

Also, when I first saw the painting, I didn't notice it was a woman, and I thought it was The Man in Black from The Dark Tower. I guess the brief glimpse made it look like a distorted version of Matthew McConaughey.

For me some of Pennywise's movements were that. But nothing particularly stands out as too ridiculous.
>>
>>87463984
Unintentionally funny? Ehhh most of the humor was intentional. Richie was fucking hilarious in this one.
>>
>>87463969

The orange swirl IS Pennywise.

It's the Deadlights AKA IT's true form.
>>
>>87463919

At the end she said she was moving in with her aunt. I believe we're led to assume she at least told her aunt what happened or about the abuse. I don't think her dad is dead but it's doubtful her dad would go to the police or anything because that would basically be opening the door to an investigation.
>>
>>87464018
I think you can only call it grasping when you're not sure the creators intended a message or not - in this case, I know they didn't. Wasn't on their radar. But certainly allegorical, to me. That's what I took from it. Would encourage other like-minded people to see it for those elements.

I don't think he was the scariest but Bill Skarsgard acted really well as Pennywise. My favorite scene of his was when he was fucking with Eddie before the Losers saved him.
>>
>>87464018
She looked too weird. I think that's a Muschietti thing. Mama had the same problem. It would have been creepier if she looked just slightly off instead of some overtly scary monster woman. Like, why the fuck would someone have that painting in their office?
>>
This movie made me depressed.
I will never be a kid again.
I never have had a summer or teen romance.
And all these kids who will grow up, probably forget about that crazy summer and only remember it as just an overactive imagination once their older and all have gone seperate ways.
And of course the fact that this movie is in fucking chapters, this current one was only "chapter one".
>>
>>87464003
The director of this did Mama, and he's like a protege of Giuellermo (?) del Toro, meaning he's all about wacky horror designs with wonky eyes and elongated limbs and what not.

That chick was just a replacement for whatever Stan saw in the books, I can't fucking remember, and the Leper had similar design elements.

It's just another thing Pennywise turns into to scare kids.
>>

The original IT was fucking hilarious because Tim Curry is just too fucking funny to take seriously

I take it that this one doesn't have that same issue
>>
>>87464003
I think it was just a creepy picture. One of those irrational fears we all have as a kid. My dad used to have a display case of a bunch of models that he painted as a kid right by our computer growing up. Whenever I got on as a 7 year old I had a zombie, a wolfman, and dracula right at eye level.
Or when I had some kids over for a sleep over for my 10th birthday. We were in the living room next to our backyard windows and a big glass door. One of the kids mentioned imagining something outside and we all looked at each other before migrating to my bedroom.
It's just something that you know isn't supposed to be scary, but then you find yourself face to face with it.
>>
>>87464123
Oh my god that's a lame ass point of view to have. Being a kid sucks adulthood is much better.

Same here, man. I have a super soft spot for "kids come of age together and experience something huge in a nostalgic setting" movies. Stand By Me, Super 8, Goonies, etc.

This movie is right up there with those. Loved it. But made me a little sad.

Reminded me of my old friend groups, long gone. A little depressing, but as Stephen King himself once wrote, "Friends come in and out of our lives like busboys at a restaurant. That's just the way it is, I suppose."

King also wrote, "I never had any friends later on in life like I had when I was 12. Jesus, does ANYONE?"

Nah, Bill plays Pennywise as funny, but also way more of a monster
>>
>>87464170
Yes, I know. I looked all that up months ago, and it gave me an unrealistic expectation that they'd have a shitload more of the book's monster forms.
>>
>>87464125
Stan's thing in the book was the standpipe filled with dead kids that he fended off by reciting birds.

I just realized that they removed Stan's birdwatching thing but I figure otherwise it's true to his character. Making him scared of a painting in his dad's office seems like something brief to set up that works pretty okay.

Right, right, the bird watching thing.
I'm a little disappointed they didn't stick closer to the book's more elaborate scares, considering the adult portion has a lot less of those.

King is an expert at childhood nostalgia. I read Joyland last year and get rid of the stupid serial killer bullshit and you've got a great novel.

I don't know - I don't think I would have changed a thing about the movie. In it's current form, it hit all the right notes, and those were pretty high up.

>>87464362
Honestly, almost none. Anything that could be considered "jump scare" never comes out of nowhere. The horror comes from creepiness and terror. Never quiet walking them BOO! It's always "on no, oh no, oh what, oh what, oh shit oh shit OH SHIT OH SHIT" if that makes sense.
>>
>>87463866
>There weren't any references to Pennywise's spider form in the film.

During The end fight Pennywise limbs literally turn into a spider when attacking Mike.
>>
>all you have to do is attack him in a group

Eddie was hilarious too. This cast was very strong.
>>
>>87464432
>"on no, oh no, oh what, oh what, oh shit oh shit OH SHIT OH SHIT" if that makes sense.
That makes perfect sense. It isn't a thing you're not expecting, it all builds up. Honestly, during the headless child scene, when pennywise says "Egg" and Ben turns around to see the clown chasing after him? that part had me shitting my fucking self and it didn't need no jumpscares.
>>
>>87464511
Not quite. You just have to not be afraid of him. When they're together, they're less afraid because they're working together to take him down.

This is why he constantly tries to separate the kids and pick them off one by one, because when they're alone, they are the most afraid and vulnerable.
>>
>>87464511
It's not just that they're in a group. It because they all, AS a group, decided to fear no longer. I thought that was pretty obvious.

>>87464522

anyone else think they'll try and make it three movies? Since the is going to make so much money, I could definitely see them trying to stretch it to three. Or two parts of part two cuz jews
>>
>>87464566
In the film? Not explained. Just where he's settled and can easily pick them off.

In the novel? Pennywise is a cosmic horror creature from outside space and time and feeds off fear. He enters our universe via a comet that crashlands on Earth where Derry will be millions of years later. He is formless, but the form closest to his true, final form™ is a giant spider. He favors a creepyass closen though

Movie is better, in my opinion. That almost NEVER happens, either... especially a REMAKE movie.
>>
>>87464394
I think a lot of the issue is that most people can't even properly remember their childhood, they can't remember the happiness and carefree attitude. They might remember being happy, but they can't actually remember the bliss felt.
>>
>>87464652
They talk about it in the next scene or two, it was the latest missing kid's, they say someone found the arm and it had been chewed on.

>>
>>87464566

In the books that's just where he happened to land millions of years ago and the city was eventually built there. Probably just stays as a convenience sort of thing. The reason why he specifically comes back for The Losers even once they're adults is because of arrogance. Even after being defeated once, in the books he says that he still didn't see them as a threat because he was a superior being.
>>

Do we ever see any kids get hurt in Walking Dead or just kid zombies?
>>
>>87464713
Same here. The only thing I'm worried about is that, although good by itself, I think most of my love of this film comes from the kids and their relationships, their growing up, and the nostalgia that comes with all that.

Seeing kids overcome their terror is what makes a great film. Seeing adults deal with their greatest fears is called "my life every fucking day"

There's a Lego turtle.

In the King universe, the Turtle is basically the antithesis of It. If It is Satan, the Turtle is God.

Sounds fucking stupid, but it works. Maybe wouldn't on screen, but as literature, it works.
>>
>>87464813
It's pretty much implied she was already being raped.
>>
>>87464769
I know of two scenes that the turtle is brought up.
Bill picks up a lego turtle he finds in Georgie's room.
When the kids are swimming at the quarry, one says he feels something on his foot and the other says "It's probably just a turtle!"
>>
>TFW my fears are genitalia getting ripped apart and eye torture

I know what IT would do to me I guess
>>
>>87464792
I'm mostly worried because I thought the adult bit of the original "It' was the weakest part of the film. Granted, that was when Pennywise was at his funniest, but it completely stopped being scary. It became a movie of "Watch these manchildren cry and bitch until they finally decide to do something about this fucking clown. Meanwhile, watch Tim Curry be funny."
>>
>>87464782

>>87464813

I doubt he's actually dead. If it was straight out murder she wouldn't have been allowed to leave that easily. Like someone else said it's also pretty doubtful the dad would have went to the police himself because then they'd ask for both sides of the story and they probably wouldn't buy that she just attacked him for no reason.

Oh fuck, I forgot about the turtle comment at the quarry. I wrote >>87464845 but forgot about that part.

As a related note, I adored the quarry scene. Every second of it. It captures innocence of childhood and friendships just so clearly. And then, with the turtle (who is the benevolent force of the universe) comment, it's like saying "this is the epitome of goodness and innocence." Then, when we see It terrorize them one by one in the wellhouse, we see the malevolent force saying "this is what fucking hell is like."

Oh man, I don't know how they pulled that great of a performance out of such a young actor, but he was perfect. All the kids were excellent, but you're right. Georgie being so sweet and really innocent was just heartwrenching at times. When Bill sees him throughout, I wanted to cry there with him. And when he and Bill had their scene at the beginning... man, very emotional.

Then, when he meets Pennywise? Even there, he pulls off innocence so well, but uneasiness, that he laughs and smiles at the popcorn comments, etc.

That makes It all the more sinister. How evil must you be to exploit the death of Georgie?

God, I'm so glad this movie was as good as it was. I was hyped, but super worried. Wouldn't have changed a thing.

Just one more scene of members of the group seeing Pennywise somewhere off in the distance mocking them.
>>
>>87465008

>>
>>87465099
there's no other actual on screen deaths besides georgie, there's an off-screen kill of patrick hockstetter where he gets grabbed by pennywise and then it cuts away and he's gone

there are a few zombie children shown to scare the kids
>>
>>87465099
In terms of on-screen deaths:
-Grown man gets stabbed in the throat with a knife. Chokes on his own blood and dies.
-Teenage bully gets thrown down a well, and you can see the evidence of his body crashing into the walls of the well, most likely shattering his bones and killing him in the end.

And then there's a brief moment where Pennywise scares two of the kids by showing what he did to one of the little girls he killed: They find her body chained up by her arms. Her upper torso is all that remains, leaving entrails dripping below the waist. She's screaming.

Oh I forgot henry's dad.

Though I would think they specifically didn't show henry's corpse at any point so they could bring him back, as improbable as it would be.

A lot of it feels like they weren't sure there'd ever be a sequel, or they were just smart enough to make it more contained even if they knew there would be.
>>
So does it also need physical sustenance? Because if all he needed was fear all that he would need to do is scare people, it would be much more efficient because it would take less effort and would keep the victims alive

>>
>>87465353
The movie never says it, but the original movie had Pennywise say "You all taste so much better when you're afraid."

From my understanding, by devouring them when they are afraid in this movie, he is able to claim their very soul, as his mouth is actually a gapping vortex of screaming children. Same, but who is complaining...

But there is a moment where he tries to eat Bev, but Bev displays that she's not afraid of him. Turns out, she is correct, and he doesn't eat her. He claims "You will be" and saves her for later.
>>
>>87465273
>>87465370
FUCK, same here. Which was brilliant on the filmmakers' part - we were thinking and feeling EXACTLY what Bill was. "Oh shit... oh no, *was* that really Georgie?" The entire central point of the scene was Bill dealing with the fear and malice of It by letting go of Georgie... and then thinking "oh shit, have I made a mistake?" We feel the same thing in that moment.

Fantastic.
>>
>>87465070
I disagree, anon. I think this new Pennywise has to be the scariest movie monster we've seen in years. Literally years. There's two scenes in this movie that absolutely sent shivers down my spine. First when Pennywise possesses the slideshow and we finally get to see his very creepy and mental face in the final scene. What a build-up! I nearly pissed myself.

The other one is in the basement, first we see the excellent performance by Georgie's actor. You'll float too never has sounded more epically scary. And then Pennywise rises from the waters. I jumped in my chair and still do when watching this. I can tell I will be on the edge of my seat in theatres this september.

The movie itself seems to capture that 80s feeling we've seen in Stranger Things and other important work. Do your part and see it in theaters. Be a part of history.
