take the red pill:
>no set design, feels empty and lifeless
>no interesting ideas for storylines and generally bad writing
>relies on gimmicks only instead
>those are unoriginal or just bad, unfortunately ("fuck you, albert", glove, andy and lucy, coordinates, riddles, ...)
>bad acting (Bell, Lynch, Horse, Robertson, Dern, ...)
>dull characters (one-dimensional at best)
>storylines and characters are introduced for no purpose
>everything is supposed to weirdly connect and make sense
>shot in digital in a way that doesn't compensate for the technology's disadvantages (looks bad)
>roadhouse scenes (out of place, badly shot, the songs, the bands, the extras, ...)
>student-tier storytelling/editing (characters are shown walking up complete sets of stairs)
>stretched out needlessly, long takes have no particular effect
>obviously delusional and/or inexperienced fanbase perceiving it as particularly meaningful, complex or "deep"
>can't compare to the original series that doesn't have those problems (coherent/complex and beautiful sets, costumes and make-up/well shot/well acted/well written/magnificent multi-dimensional characters and character relations, music, storylines and gimmicks/creates a unique athmosphere as a result, changing the world of television forever whereas "the return" neither manages to do something established really good nor to invent something new)
>extended pitch black scenes because of a lack of a competent cinematographer
>audio issues with microphone static left unaddressed because of poor sound design
>extremely poor editing with magically disappearing extras and production staff accidentally walking into frame
>somehow the best thing in tv history

Did Mrs. Chalfont replace Sarah Palmer in her house in order to protect Laura from Sarah? That would make the ending fairly optimistic, then. I wish some horror game got him to do the art design. Doesn't even have to do any of the writing, just design some creatures and settings. Him working on a Silent Hill game is honestly one of my wet dreams. Maybe because that series owes quite a bit to him already.

Hell, the entire sequence with Mister C above the convenience store in episode 15 felt right out of Silent Hill.

Serial Experiment Lain is terrible, and that's coming from someone who loves SF and has read / watched a lot of manga & anime looking for an SF "fix". It's like a cartoon version of a low budget Australian teen drama, right down to the music.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, on the other hand, is - now I've seen it in full - better than Twin Peaks: The Return. And that's coming from someone who loved (almost) every second of The Return.

Episode 18 reminds me quite a bit of Inland Empire, both in mood and imagery. In Inland Empire, Laura Dern's character begins to take on aspects of the character she is playing, and then to re-live the life of the cursed woman the story was based on. I think that when Cooper enters the dark reality in which he is Richard, Diane is Linda, and Laura is Carrie Page, he begins to take on aspects of Richard, but is able to retain his memories and mission rather than ending up totally bamboozled like Laura.

Why is it that people assume Judy is the one who created the "alt dimension/dream world/whatever you want to call it at the end" when the Fireman is the one that gave Cooper clues about that place? Would he really be able to know much about a place Judy constructed?

Always remember.
There's one key difference between the person who looks at a piece of art and thinks, "I could have made that," and the artist:
The artist made something.

That's the oldest defence to any shitty piece of art ever made, LMAO AT LEAST HE MADE SOMETHING XD
I bet you think Piss Christ is a revolutionary piece of art as well, since it's also subversive. That's all it matters, right? A century of film was just faggots that could not understand that to make something good, all you need to do is shit on your audience

Coop's FBI/Lodge powers got him to Laura. He used his intuition and questioning of the right people to get himself there. He could also be getting help from the Fireman still.
>>
>>87388030
Interior Semiotics was also made by somebody. Does it have intrinsic value because of that? Does Piss Christ? I can go take a shit right now if it makes you feel any better
Point is that being subversive just for the sake of being subversive takes no talent whatsoever and it's a spit in the face to those filmmakers who actually take their time to build up something and dedicated their lives to the art of filmmaking, anyone can pull a rug from underneath you and call it art

Got that feeling too. But why not be more open about it? Are Lynch and Frost ashamed of making something as pedestrian as a happy ending for their show?
>>
>>87388170
They at the very least defeated her trap

she meant to force Cooper into becoming Richard, without remembering his life as Coop

but he stayed himself, and brought Laura back to her old self
>>
>>87388216
same thing happened to Coop's new tulpa. Nudougie became retarded after leaving the red room in ep18
>>
>>87388234
Lynch is all about good followed by evil

The most memorable one for me is the scene of Big ed and Norma reuniting, it's happy music and clouds, then hard cut to dark electric power lines and bad coop.

Episode 17 brings you up high, and 18 drops you down low
>>
>>87388136
Watch for off or no product placement to see alternate dimensions.
>>
>>87388105
>and it wasn't obvious
Laura working in a place called Judy's is pretty obvious

>Coop's FBI/Lodge powers got him to Laura.
What got him to Laura was noticing the place and just putting it together. It doesn't take FBI training or Lodge powers to do that. My thing is it's a little too easy for Dale Cooper, which makes me think Judy purposely wanted Cooper to find her, that is if she had anything to do with Laura's placement in the world
>>
>>87388234
FWWM had a happy ending all things considered.
>>
>>87388276
New Dougie is made from good, intelligent Coop

Old Dougie was made from evil Coop

Coop was the one that was retarded, Dougie was a normal ass guy with some bad habits (thanks to being made from bad Coop). So logically, this Dougie will be a much better person over all.
>>
>>87388143

No, and neither do you. Saying it's happy is speculation at best. When Lynch does ahappy ending it FEELS happy, like the end of Inland Empire when the woman watching rabbits on TV weeps with joy and we see a bunch of Lynch weirdos and prostitutes having a party while a dude saws a log and upbeat jazz plays. The mood of episode 18 was monumentally bleak. Now you could argue that it's because the hero and the damsel in distress are deep in the evil realm which IS bleak, and like some say, you could argue the lights going out in the fake (?) Palmer House mean the illusion is being shattered by Laura getting her memories back, etc, but that's conjecture and the post-credits shot is extremely emotionally down as well.
>>

I seriously can't cope with the idea that for all the good he did it all meant jackshit in the end and all of his love and kindness was rewarded with
>him being trapped in another hell world
>losing yet another woman he loved in an even more painful way than if she had just died
>failing to save Laura
>possibly losing his identity for good, wiping out Dale Cooper for good
It's actually ruining the finale for me, because while it is undoubtedly a kino ending, it's just too fucking cruel and actually makes the episode unpleasant to watch, especially compared to the previous triumphant, cheerful tones of the previous ones. Cooper didn't deserve this.

I have a theory that Lynch's new hateboner for Coop is his way of expressing his bitterness and anger to all the Coopfags who were pissed about FWWM and slammed it because it didn't continue his story. I am 100% sure now that all the haters are looking at that movie now and WISHING that was the kind of ending we got for Coop; at least he looks somewhat happy being with Laura.

Or maybe I'm wrong and Lynch just hates Cooper now for no reason. It happened with Audrey, and from what I recall, he used to love her character too.

He's struggling to keep his identity as Coop. He's stuck in an unfamiliar world not under his control. At the end he is confused because he's unable to do the curtain thing or find a portal. He reaches out his hand in a searching motion. That's when he asks what year it is, when he's uncertain of the reality he's in.

Thanks, lol. Now what do I make of that?
>>
>>87388807
CBS ruined Twin Peaks for David Lynch. They made him reveal the mystery he never wanted revealed and it caused him to basically leave the show outside of doing his performance as Gordon. He came back for the finale and basically shit all over everything they wrote after Leland's death; he killed Windom Earle, Cooper wasn't allowed to give up his soul to save Annie, some nothing character that was inserted to appease Laura Flynn Boyle because she didn't like Sherilyn Fenn, then ended it with Cooper trapped in hell while his doppleganger went around and caused ass sorts of havoc.

Then he got to make his movie, how he wanted and people shit all over it because it wasn't le coffee and pie bullshit, so he just dropped it for good until Frost called him up a few years ago. I don't think Lynch really cares for Twin Peaks all that much anymore, he only came back because it gave him a vehicle to try new things and be creative. He doesn't really care about giving Cooper and Laura happy endings.
>>
>>87389124

There's interviews where he shows real love for Twin peaks and the characters. He talks about enjoying jumping into that world and figuring out the character's lives.
>>
>>87389212
>I don't think Lynch really cares for Twin Peaks all that much anymore, he only came back because it gave him a vehicle to try new things and be creative
People need to stop spreading this meme around. Lynch has never given the impression that he hates Twin Peaks. Maybe he hated the behind the scenes drama and the reception FWWM had, but that doesn't mean he hates the idea, the characters or the world.
>>

>>
>>87389212
It's not really about a happy ending for me, he didn't want it to end period, as per episode 17 twin peaks has been pretty much erased completely since Laura never died and Cooper never came to Twin Peaks to investigate it, then he moves on to a different mistery box he has no way of solving

Honestly, this would have never worked. There's only so long you can keep that mystery unsolved. What did he want to happen? Or Josie's dumb shit? Or whatever teen drama James and co were getting up to?

For the type of show he was making at the time, Laura's killer would have had to have been found eventually.

I appreciate how they didn't show the new Twin Peaks and left it up to your immagination, but still it's a matter of fact that nothing from s01e01 to s03e16 never happened. Everyone may be better off (or not) but it might as well be another town since it's not the twin peaks we came to know.
I accept that's what he wanted to do but it's not really for me, I don't like do-over endings

He did recognize the Tremond/Chalfont names, but he didn't know what to do. He was beaten until Laura 'woke up.'

No but seriously man, I feel the same way. Sucks that you can't say that around here without jumping through hoops to prove your loyalty to Lynch though.

>>
>>87389624
>but still it's a matter of fact that nothing from s01e01 to s03e16 never happened

No it's not. That timeline is just a parallel universe. When Cooper saved Laura in the past it created a separate universe where she's alive, it didn't rewrite the previous timeline.
>>
>>87389523

25 years of life get erased. Probably there were children and young adults born in that timeline that wouldn't have been born if Laura Palmer didn't die (and not just Richard Horne). What happens to them? Non-existence?

Fucking HATE time travel, I can understand why the Chinese government banned it. This is almost like the final season of LOST.
>>
I'm starting to be convinced by the "Laura was trapped in a dream which Cooper entered to save her and she wakes up at the end" theory

>>87389632
I know about the first date, but I'm talking about the second. It made it seem like they had to go back to Jack Rabbit's Palace. And it didn't really look like a warning for them to be on alert for Mr. C on that date because it's too vague to be a warning.
>>
>>87389749
>it didn't rewrite the previous timeline.

I think it did. They show Laura's body on the shore, and then it CGI's into nothing. If it was a separate universe, we would just see an empty shore. Instead we get a literal visual explanation of erasing.
>>
>>87389777

Holy fuck, the dead guy in her living room is really the guy that Bobby killed.

That's why there's a fucking dead guy in her room, because Laura in 1989 just witnessed Bobby kill a guy which she feels guilty about, so he's there in her dream in Odessa and she wants to get away.
>>
>>87389749
How do you know? The Carrie Page universe is a completely different world entirely considering that it clearly deviated before 1989.
But I guess the existance of another world is enough to confirm that parallel timelines are a thing in the Dreamscape and thus that the original didn't get erased? It makes sense, but by that point we might as well have gotten some resolution on Shelley, Bobby and Audrey instead of dropping them entirely
>>
>>87389627
Somebody said that Richard Coop gives less fucks and we get the cowboy scene. If he really was going for broke, he would have barged into the house if it was really that important. And maybe see who is feeding that woman the answers.

Anyone else like FWWM more than the return? Not saying the return's bad (I really enjoyed it), but FWWM has a different, more "magical realist" tone to it, if you get my meaning. It feels weird and dreamlike, but it also feels more grounded in reality. I think that's partly because of the effects (everything is done via practical effects / cross fades, rather than CGI / stop motion), but also because of the music.

I think that's mainly because the Return embraces showing the big picture in the surrealist / supernatural (semi-explaining the lore, showing the ocean / void, showing tons of different supernatural places that are connected, showing an alternate timeline). As for events in the real world, they are shown more subjectively (subplots are cut off / discontinued, some stuff is clearly meant to be parody, etc).

Meanwhile in FWWM we see more of the real world and the characters who inhabit it, and more cryptic snapshots of the spirit world. It introduces the convenience store, but that's it. We also see characters behave more realistically around supernatural stuff.

In the Return, nobody freaks out / gets weirded out by supernatural events. I can understand Cooper and the FBI (and Hawk to an extent) being familiar with it, but the other characters don't react to it realistically. Maybe that was the point, though.
>>
>>87389749

That's pure conjecture. If anything, the repeated references to "living in a dream" and Cooper's face superimposed over the screen suggest the timeline where Laura died was un-made by Cooper travelling in time. So the only proof that it ever happened is in Cooper's own head, hence "living in a dream".... Someone else's memory of a cancelled-out timeline.

What?

I'm talking about the deputy from Dear Meadow who Bobby shoots at the end of FWWM right before S3 Cooper intervenes and "saves" Laura.

Laura is Carrie Page in her dream just like Diane Selwyn is Betty Elms in her dream.
>>
>>87389900
Sorry anon. I meant to type Nice.
>>
So, I guess I have to rewatch the show to try and figure out which scenes are set in OT (original timeline where Laura died) and NT (new timeline where Laura did not die). Although I kind of can't be bothered now. At least in LOST the purgatory/alternate timeline "flash sideways" scenes could be argued to provide some insight into the characters inner wishes, but none of the characters, old or new, in Twin Peaks, are developed enough to be worthwhile.

Shit, I really enjoyed watching The Return, but fucking time travel, man. Fuck.
>>
>>87389997
really? That sounds plausible especially if you're a phone poster

but you could just be someone fucking with me also
>>

Oh yeah. Was the deputy not Renault's bro. But my point still stands.
>>
>>87389967
That wasn't the deputy from deer medow, the actors just happened to look alike but they were two different people
>>
>>87390008
oh shit, I bet all the scenes with Ed and Norma are set in the new timeline. Shelley calls her daughter to get a piece of pie with her, then bobby shows up and shelley isn't there at all. I guess Dougie playing baseball with Sonny Jim is also in the new timeline. Nadine probably watches Jacobi in both timelines since they show that twice.
Nice catch, I can't believe I didn't realize what was going on, I am retarded

it's the same guy
>>
>>87390064

That's a good one.

Anything with Richard H. is OT... I wonder, is Audrey happy and sane in the new timeline?

Any scenes with Richard Horne must be OT.
>>
>>87390120
>>
>>87390205
At this point I believe that Audrey has been dreaming about the new timeline while in the old one, which is why the Arm repeats the phrase she said within the dream

So was the dealer/Cliff, although from the other way around.

I'm not convinced that the guy in the Carrie's room is supposed to be him though, I was just pointing out the dealer is Cliff.
>>
>>87390278

That makes a lot of sense. Well, it doesn't make any fucking sense, but it seems like a valid possibility for this show.
>>
What the fuck happened to Audrey?
>>
>>87390564
The entire dialogue is so fucked. Lucy repeats the lines "Which one?" and "It could make a difference" twice, while the insurance guy doesn't respond to any of her questions but just says disconnected lines, while repeating the "I'd like to see Sherrif Truman" line further in the conversation.
>>
>>87390574
The Coop I know said "I am the FBI". The Coop in Odessa doesn't give a shit about the dead guy, or who murdered him.
>>
>>87390564

Do you think Frank is sheriff Truman in one timeline and Harry is sheriff Truman in the other?

Is that why Harry got cancer? exposure to lodge radiation in owl cave or something?

Black fire? There are a lot of cancer patients in twin peaks...
>>
>>87390672

Timelines
>>
I hate to say it, but there really just isn't enough meat on the bones in this series. Feels like there's too much fat. I think Lynch and Frost went overboard on vagueness, it almost feels like they've done it in a mocking way.

A real plot twist to the series woul've been Lynch just ending the series normally.

To show the results of Cooper's absence / BOB running amok / Lodges seeping into the real world. The world is growing darker, the Lodge is able to affect reality without the need for hosts like Leland. Even if BOB is destroyed, the world is still too corrupted by Judy and the Lodge at this point.

>>87390828
she was sick
>>
>>87390828
Symptom of a world falling apart
>>
>>87390722
Because it wasn't relevant at all at that point. Coop was trying to get Carrie/Laura to Twin Peaks, why bother with a random dead guy, it's not part of the mission.
>>
>>87390726
No because every other character is expecting Harry and he has to explain a few times. Notably Donna's dad.
>>
What did Laura whisper on Copper's ear?
>>
>>87389837
FWWM is the best thing to come out of TP imo

I was really hoping The Return would just be FWWM levels of quality for 18 hours but sadly it wasn't

Return was fantastic but FWWM was even better
>>
>>87390948
Then he wimps out the end.
>>
>>87390776

He was there to show a glimpse of the old timeline where Laura died and lots of people in Twin Peaks got leukemia because of Lodge radiation.
>>
>>87391021
How? He brought her there, didn't he?
>>
I don't mind there being an overload of surrealism, but what I'm seriously disappointed about is all these random side plots that really go nowhere. The ones that do, like Steven & Becky, I have a hard time caring about because we don't really get enough information about these characters to care. I would have at least felt something if they showed Bobby & Shelly finding out what happened.
>>
>>87391057
You're not supposed to care, it's just to show continuation and return of themes that were always present. Just know that however much Cooper is a good guy, or how good the Twin Peaks police is, they'll never weed out all the evil, because Judy is there, making sure it keeps going wrong.
