Maybe it's a bit of both but I had been under the impression that GRRM was the one that chose to separate from the show to "focus" on his books.
In truth I don't think it would help as much as people think, I imagine at this point D&D just want to be done with it and get out before it overstays its welcome which is exactly what would've happened if they suddenly introduced the entirety of the Doran, Euron, fAegon, Quentyn, Victarion, Loras, etc. plots. I think the Oberyn and current Euron plots felt sudden enough to most people watching the show.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely agree that Oberyn was generally enjoyed but going from little mention of Dorne in the first 3 seasons to the sudden appearance of a Prince with his royal retinue and exposition (which I'm annoyed lacked the tyrell fued) came off as jarring to me.
Good point with the Stannis plot though, I suppose that at least means it wasn't a new feature of the show.

Prequels to established franchises that seek to untangle and shine a light on events that were merely referenced in the main show will always lead to disappointment. There's not a single good prequel to anything just like there are zero good adaptations of books to movies. Because of the already established world that's been made up in the minds of the audience, the product never delivers. We've made up our own thoughts regarding virtially everything that happened in the past in ASOIAF and if some hack decides to make a prequel TV-show, it won't be as good and a lot of the mysticism will get tossed out and probably everything will be retconned. See Star Wars and The Hobbit vs. original trilogies.

So I haven't watched GoT Season 7 yet. I was with /tv/ on every new episode for all the prior seasons (starting with season 3), but after the comedic disaster that occurred in Season 6, I sort of just tuned out and wasn't that interested in watching it in July and August.

Obviously HBO just wants the series to end, it can't have more character developments and a longer Season 8 filming time.
However, they should've made Littlefinger outright defend himself and make the entire encounter seem morally ambiguous on the side of the starks decision to just kill him.
Imagine if people in the room said "we should have a proper trial" and Sansa says "no, he's going to die now", some storm out saying that Ned wouldn't find this behavior acceptable.
It creates so much more depth for how Sansa, Bran, and Arya have lost her innocence and the idea of honor their father instilled in them.

It just goes to show how he had been walking on a razors edge the whole show, and the tiniest of mistakes would be his downfall.

It doesn't even matter if his plan was perfect, because dealing with people is unpredictable. So even when you do everything right, you can still fail. And he made the mistake of thinking he could split up the stark family, with an obvious lie about Arya wanting to be the lady of winterfell.
