He thought that cropping the black bars would introduce an aspect ratio error in his video, which, while true, is so insignificantly small that doesn't really matter.
It is actually recommended by the x264 devs themselves to crop the black bars away (which are later re-introduced by your video player) when compressing a video, so that it won't mess with a few x264 settings (AQ strength and IIRC MB-tree)
