So it's pretty much agreed that this is the exact moment the writing started to decline, right?
>Make one episode more of a sitcommy story of a boy getting caught shoplifting and having to deal with the repercussions and moral guilt
>Simpsons nerds start to curse its name because of The Zombie Simpsons
Look I really like Dead Homer's Society, no other blog went meticulous to explain everything that went wrong with The Simpsons, but they're being jerks for attacking the episode.

You really have to wonder why the writers thought the show needed a sitcom-esque "special episode" played straight with Bart acting wildly out of character. The jokes for this ep in particular are pretty paper-thin as well.

the episode with the Sneeds feed and sneed was the true decline
>Sneed-Ai (Formerly Chuck-Ai)
A Chuck falls in love with a Sneed.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the man's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls him, and is overjoyed to find out that he has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the male, he only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the boy he called is not the same boy he fell in love with. In fact, he doesn't exist in this universe at all. He is the bear's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the male's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of FEEDS and SEEDS.

Bart was characterized as somebody who was much more interested in being seen as edgy than that bad a kid at heart. He was a softie next to Nelson, Kearney, Jimbo, and Dolph.
The Simpsons making its characters into stock caricatures helped accelerate the shows decline.

Yeah. A lot of people view it as an iconic episode but the writing is very lazy. It's one of the first episodes I remember with the terrible "dialogue states something then it happens" jokes.
If I remember rightly Marge says something like "the house is practically falling apart" then the chimney falls down. From the brief clips of recent episodes I've seen this appears to be their joke style now.

Simpson Tide, in a sense, wasn't a real Simpsons episode
it was one of those weird Al & Mike episodes they produced occasionally while they were working for Disney
when it first aired, I was amazed how much I hated the episode. I had no problem with The Principal & The Pauper, and didn't know it was controversial until years later.
Simpson Tide, however was worse than Sadgasm and the Ke$ha opening combined.
I'm not so sure that Mike Scully is the worst person in the Simpsons universe. Al Jean seems more and more like a humorless hack who happened to be showrunner while the best writing staff in the world made him and Mike Reiss look good.
>>87258162
Early Simpsons was great for it's time. Compared to everything else on tv it was pretty edgy too.
The first "real" t.v family.

This. I think most people have forgotten because of what Bart turns into in later seasons, but early on, Bart wasn't cool. He was a loser who regularly got bullied by people like Nelson and Kearney; most of his antics in the earlier episodes were more about trying to look cool for them instead of mischief for its own sake.

>The first truly horrific episode was probably the Frank Grimes episode.
The Grimey episode is one of the best of the series. It's almost a perfect deconstruction of how the show works. The thing people like to criticize it for is introducing the self-awareness that killed the show later on, which really has no bearing on the episode itself.
