Ancalagon was kept inside the fortress of Angband, which was under the shade of the three peaks of the Thangorodrim. This is canon, Morgot rose the mountains to protect the fortress.

If Ancalagon was that huge, that means Angband had to be much larger to properly house the dragon... which would mean the fortress was being protected by something that would comparatively look like a small pebble.

Yes, the book says Ancalagon fell and broke the mountain, something that could be physically accomplished if he was the size of the hand in that pic. And that doesn't account magic shit going on, perhaps he exploded in impact.

I read these books like 18 years ago. All I remember was there was *a* bigass spider skulking around in the minas morgul region back when sauron was still around and raising hell. Not just before LOTR's timeline, think thousands of years before, back when the simarilions were hot shit. I forget who it was but some dark character had possesion of a few simarilions and was being chased/hunted and gave one to this spider. IIRC the person with possession was wounded/weak and couldnt resist like they could normally. The person with them had to watch in terror as the spider swallowed one of the gems from the crown and its light was extinguished.

That spider stuck around and was never killed... Shelob *might* be a descendant but because they mentioned no one ever fucking with the spider again I assumed it became what we know as Shelob.
