Apparently, Frank Oz didn't like the full version of the song.
Also, the Director's Cut wasn't made by Frank Oz and was merely approved by him.
The Director's Cut was basically the Theatrical Version but they replaced the theatrical ending with the longer version of the original ending which was a bonus on the double-sided Special Edition DVD.
The workprint had a shorter version of the Director's Cut ending.
The Special Edition DVD was a very short run since the alternate ending there was incomplete, in black-and-white and of poor quality.
They found a much better quality print of the longer original ending in color and they made the Director's Cut using that source.
