The one major flaw in this season for has been the lack of emotional investment and payoff outside of the returning character's arcs. Cooper leaving Dougie's family was great last week and I hope we can fit in more in that vein alongside the Lodge shenanigans for the finale

As for the lack of emotional resonance, I think that's intentional. The town of Twin Peaks and its inhabitants feels much more cold and desolate, because not only has goodness left the town for 25 years, we as viewers have left it to fall apart.

Lol, this is so bad. The story is messy beyond belief. Really amateurish stuff. There are no developed characters, merely stereotypes (Hutch and Chantal) that die and nobody cares. Does anyone remember the junkie who was spouting some random numbers in the early episodes? What was it with that? Nobody knows. Why did DoppelCoop kill Hastings' wife? It was never explained and it had nothing to do with anything. Who was Mr. Strawberry? Pointless. Isn't it awful having a great character like Ben Horne and under-utilizing him to a horrible degree? Yes it is but the fans don't mind. To them it all smells like roses. What about the glass box from episode one? Forgotten. That's not a way to run a TV series. You need coherence, you need structure.

The whole thing is so ludicrous that parts of it feel like unintentional comedy and, no, I'm not talking about the bits that are supposed to be comedy (which are bad). The direction isn't any better. Did you see the effects when Diane "blew up" in the Red Room? Terrible and cheap looking (I know, I know, it's like that on purpose, lol).

I actually can't believe how poor the new Twin Peaks is. It's really bad. Really really bad. I find it even harder to believe the amount of praise it gets. The fans I can explain. The series has such low viewership figures that literally only the hardcores are watching. Therefore it's to be expected that they'll praise it to seventh heaven. What is not as easily explainable is the preposterous praise it gets from news outlets (thankfully there are exceptions), but that's hipster culture for you. The new Twin Peaks is trending.

Anyway, the way I see it, there are two explanations for what's happening here. One explanation is that David Lynch has gotten senile. It happens, he's 71. The other explanation is that he made a cash-grab and intentionally didn't bother to put any effort either in the writing or in the visual department, in which case the praise this gets is all that much funnier.

I dunno, dude. I did not expect Boop to be literally screaming WHO IS JUDY!? at teapot-Jeffries, if I am completely honest with you. This is Lynch we're talking about.

I still have a feeling, though it is highly unlikely, that Lynch/Frost have already planned out a season 4 fully. They might have already shot it too.

There's too many story threads (Red, the Chinese designer drug, nuclear bomb lore, the doctor pictured with Mr. C next to the box, the box itself e.t.c.) which I doubt will be resolved in this final season.

If Lynch wanted this to the final season, I can't him including this many threads. They're not necessarily integral enough to the central narrative to cause the finale to be unsatisfying if they aren't resolved, but they're ripe for examining in another season.

Perhaps you could argue that those plot threads existed to provide texture to the town - to show how corrupted it has become since Cooper's disappearance - but they seem too substantial to act as background dressing essentially.

Regardless of what happens related to Cooper (the central focus of The Return), I can't the town undoing this corruption without a lot of work. This is probably just wishful thinking though.

Have you never watched a David Lynch project that wasn't Twin Peaks? The original might be one of his more straightforward works considering both Eraserhead and what came after Twin Peaks. This new series is informed by everything post-TP as much as it is the original series. Regardless of the fact that it was originally intended to be a television pilot, the finished product Mulholland Drive is riddled with dream logic and is better off for it having all of those loose ends. Twin Peaks will likely be similar, not everything needs to be solved via dialogue or even on-screen and the audience inferring answers to the narrative is a big part of what makes the show good to begin with. It can all be written off as plot holes, sure, but if you're going to participate in the entire series why not just let it do its thing?
