They knew how they wanted to start a bunch of different plot lines and mysteries and shit but had no plan for ending any of them, I guess they thought they'd figure it out as the episodes went on and they just didn't, so answering one question requires raising about five more
Same thing with Heroes, it gets fucking boring after a while
