Part of what makes (most of the deaths) in the series (minus this last season) is that the characters that die feel like they still had a part to play in future events. If you wanted to create a real sense of dread and urgency the greatest way to do it would be to kill your ultimate hero just before the final battle even starts with absolutely no hope of them coming back. You know that feeling that you're supposed to get when you see the night king kill and raise Viserion from the dead? Multiply that by a hundred and that's how normies would feel if you killed jon snow off before the last climatic battle.

Going further it wouldn't be a bad narrative. This idea that there's certain aspect of fantasy narratives that you have to adhere to is exactly what GRRM has railed against with GoT. It's the ultimate kick in the nuts to the fantasy genre.
