Finally saw 16. Pretty incredible episode.

Though I feel like there was a lot of buildup for Richard, only for no pay-off. Kinda sorta the same with the Wendy's Crew, but I was more fine with how their scene played out - I had been expecting them to be killed off in some ridiculous fashion, and I definitely got what I expected.

It's hard to see how so many of the disparate elements can be wrapped up in 2 hours, unless the show puts its foot on the gas and jumps to 80mph... though, that's kind of what happened in this recent episode after the big reveal.

I'm with you. They definitely solve more than a few plot threads by giving them a bullet in the head, which is disappointing. These story seeds were still interesting, it just feels like they didn't have the time (or didn't know how) to take them to their logical end, whatever that would have been. Hopefully it's just a few sacrifices so that they can focus more on the main plot threads so as to give those a more satisfying ending.

It's funny in the sense that for as drawn out as many of the scenes in The Return have been, many of them ultimately had nothing to do with the larger plot threads, or had resolutions. I mean, I don't think we'll see (or need to see) what that guy was talking about Chip for... which makes me wonder why we needed to see the scene at all. Or all those scenes (some fun, some a little dragged-out) with the Fuscos, who don't seem like they'll be part of the story anymore.

Part of this all makes me realize how imperfect the Return is, though I am nonetheless grateful that such a show exists and was funded to such an extent.

Seriously, the movie is worth watching, and not only for MacLachlan's very good performance. Also has Bill Murray with an interesting take on Polonius, Liev Schreiber as Laertes, Diane Venora as Gertrude, Sam Shepard (!) as the ghost, and a wonderfully paranoid pre-9/11 New York setting. Also a hot soundtrack by Carter Burwell. Not a perfect movie by any means but worth a view imo

I say FWWM is most kino but not best movie because as much as I fucking love it, the Chet parts are an interesting inversion of Twin Peaks but ultimately detract from Laura's story, the Philadelphia scenes are poorly edited in the final cut with TMP version being superior, and it relies a lot more on prior knowledge of the show to enjoy fully. Mulholland anyone can jump right in to. I might tell people FWWM is my favorite Lynch film but it's not the first I recommend.

I think one minor disappointment has been a glut of secondary characters. I get that it helps flesh out the world, but some are really superfluous. There are definitely a few elements that were just there to make the reader wonder. It's the iceberg theory, they show an element to the viewer and then let the viewer imagine the rest. Lynch loves this and he uses it well. It makes the universe seem bigger than it is and raises some questions in the viewer's mind. E.g. in FWWM we had Judy, in this one we had Chip, etc. Where it gets problematic is when they make it seem like it's going somewhere (like the Richard storyline and probably the Becky one) and then just kill it off randomly to get it out of the way.

The first thing can be done well and is used by other directors too (like Obiwan in A New Hope telling Luke "I fought alongside your father in the clone war" and letting the viewer imagine what the hell the clone war was never mind the sequel. The second thing can also be used in a satisfying manner if it's made obvious that even though characters keep referring to it, it's not the point (like the bowling match against Jesus in The Big Lebowski).

But Lynch and Frost kind of dropped the ball and just said "fuck it" on some minor storylines in TP3, like the Fusco Boys, Richard, etc. It shouldn't be that surprising, they did the same thing in season 2. Maybe we're wrong and everything will tie together in the last two episodes. In any case, the main plot threads should still be resolved in a satisfactory way (hopefully) and that's the important thing.
