They probably did take elements from each other, but come on now. This story is hardly original. I've read very similar stories in fantasy books from the 70s, Tolkien and Dungeons and Dragons cemented a lot of common modern tropes, and even they were just consolidations of old folklore and mythologies. Nothing is truly original, it's all derivative in some form. Romans got most of their shit from Greeks and I'm sure if you went all the way back in time to the ancient Greeks, even their gods and mythologies were derivative of older gods and mythologies from an even more ancient civilization that had no written word and passed everything down through oral tradition.

That said I definitely prefer Warcraft's version. I loved it up until they completed all of the Warcraft 3 storylines in WoW, got dull for me after that.

Worgen and Pandas should have stayed as NPC or reputation races. Draenei should have never been introduced the way they were. If Blizzard wasn't so obsessed with NEW RACES then this wouldn't have been an issue. But this was a key marketing component of BC. They should have just kept the vanilla races and spent time on developing new classes instead. At the very least, they should have just given the alliance a splinter faction of 'pure' high elves who didn't defect into Blood Elves. It would have been more canon appropriate and we wouldn't have the Draenei bullshit of Space Refugees which is where things started to go downhill.
