Can't really pick one, i probably between Kurosawa, Ozu and Kobyashi but all have many i love.
Also Mikio Naruse doesn't really gets enough love.
Does Terayama count as classical?
I've been (slowly) working my way through every Kurosawa film. So far my favorite has been The Bad Sleep Well. Absolutely incredible.

Shuji Terayama? Probably not, patrician taste though
While I can watch and love all the classic Samurai and period pieces almost indefinitely, Ozu's unadulterated... Ozuness... has to take the cake. I can't rewatch them as frequently, but they're virtually all utterly distinctive and contemplative experiences.

You guys know where I can find a decent copy of Emperor Tomato Ketchup? The quality of the one I have is kinda shitty.
wasabi ginger
High and Low
hands down best Kurosawa
Japanese version of Unforgiven. I think the director is Korean Japanese. In my opinion it beats out the original Eastwood movie by a bit.
