I've seen him discussed in trek threads countless times and finally got to the episode.

I was not fucking prepared for him begging for his life. I didn't think they would get that real with it. And the doctor refusing to go through with the procedure, there really is no excuse.

What the fuck is wrong with Janeway?

Tuvok and Neelix died. Then Tuvix died. Then two replacements of Tuvok and Neelix were created, unidentical in spacetime coordinates and therefore not exactly the same as the aliens who died. Three died and two abominations were spawned. What moral calculus makes this right? Has pro-transporter propaganda brainwashed everyone in this society? Is that why no one cares about which specific iteration of Harry Kim is serving so long as he's close enough?

The way Janeway just transparently caves in to this ~2 year stockholm brained old rape victim pisses me off.
>>
>>86840031

I've always wanted to see what it was like when Tuvok was undercover and Janeway was his handler. That's a side to the characters that was hinted at and never explored. Same with the Maquis. Same with the evil Caretakers.

They never gave Mulgrew a chance to make her character develop, they gave her four or five personalities that were randomly assigned per episode. But Tim Russ was solid in every episode, the ones that focused on his character, and the ones that didn't, and maybe because they hardly ever focused on him, he got to also be consistent.

And let's face it, he's two centuries old. He's not going through any kind of major character development. This is just the few decades he spent in the DQ to him.
>>

It was a fairly transparent mother-daughter thing they were trying. Even more transparent with Seven. The rumor was that Kes would rebel later in the show, but she left instead of Kim.

These people use transporters daily. They obviously believe in arrangement-functionalism (the mind or soul arises out of the arrangement of atoms, not the particularl atoms in those arrangements).

>>86844525
Yes, I know. I studied philosophy of the mind anon.

And I'm saying that in a society where people willingly walk into transporters, they probably believe consciousness arises from the arrangement of the atoms. Continuity isn't important. Therefore, as long as the transporter has perfect accuracy with the reconstruction, it's no more dangerous to your consciousness than falling asleep.

It makes less sensecwhen you think of how the transpoter works. It arranges the molecules in the target location to recreate what is being transported then it vaporizes the original. Effectively cloning something then killing it.

Essentially, if the transporter were modified, all three could have survived

Doesn't even matter, Broccoli was conscious during the datastream or whatever and Merryweather in ENT says you can feel yourself in both places at once. >Is that why no one cares about which specific iteration of Harry Kim is serving so long as he's close enough?

The Harry Kim that's serving is exactly the same as the one that they lost, up until the moment they ran into the anomaly. There isn't a "real" Harry Kim. You're treating the two Voyagers like a highway, with the other Voyager branching off the main highway. It's not though, it's more like a road with two equal forks in it.

Better question, who was in the wrong here?
>>
Tuvix was a shared condition experienced by two crew members after an incapacitating accident.

Tuvix talked about being his own person, but he was not. He wanted to replace two people, who had lived and struggled to reach that point, by the sole virtue of possessing their memories and knowledge. He wanted to be Kes' lover, Janeway's advisor and friend as well as cook and tactical officer, despite claiming he was a true individual.

He was not. He was an amalgamation of two crew members. He was not distinct from them at all. He did not die , because he was never even born. He was a condition that was cured, restoring two genuine people who had roles in many people's lives due to the fact that they lived ones of their own. Tuvix only sought to live both their lives, selfishly and impossibly.

Tuvix was not worth more than the sum of his parts.

Since this is a Star Trek thread I want to bring up a few quick points from my most recent DS9 run through.

>When the Romulans enter the war they had an opportunity to bring in a Romulan character that would act as their head military strategist. This character could have interacted with General Martok and Captain S that would have resulted in three formally warring groups working together while butting heads. It would have also given us insight in the Romulan Empire. Really a missed opportunity.

>This next point is fucking minor but annoys me every time I see it. In the final episode as Kira and her spoonhead companions storm the Dominion stronghold they get to a locked door and have a good laugh. That laugh is the fakest laugh I've ever heard. It makes my skin crawl.
>>
>>86855832
Honestly I quite like how Jadzia was a bit of a slut considering how Kurzon was a massive man-slut. Ezri must have been influenced by Worf to calm it down a bit.
>>
>>86856499
Isn't that sort of the point right? That it was forced laugh because of how depressing the situation was? Or do I have that wrong?
>>
>>86856626
I think the laugh was supposed to be a genuine laugh at the how much they had overcome only to be stopped by a door but man it was like you asked a 10 year old to fake laugh.

Man this is an understatement. I thought I'd give them a shot and pick up ST Voyager: Homecoming that leaves off right where the show ends. >Janeway confronts the Vidiians who stole Neelix's lungs
>JANEWAY: So now I am left with the same choice you made. Whether to commit murder to save a life, or to allow my own crewman to die while you breath air through his lungs.
>MOTURA: It must be impossible for you to understand how any civilised people could come to this. Before the phage began, we were known as educators and explorers, a people whose greatest achievements were artistic. I myself am a sculptor of note on my world. All I can say is that when your entire existence is at stake--
>DERETH: You don't have to explain yourself, Motura.
>MOTURA: If the consequence of this act is a death sentence, so be it. At least it will put an end to my suffering.
>JANEWAY: I can't begin to understand what your people have gone through. They may have found a way to ignore the moral implications of what you are doing, but I have no such luxury. I don't have the freedom to kill you to save another. My culture finds that to be a reprehensible and entirely unacceptable act.
Why didn't Janeway remember these words in Tuvix?
>>

Star Trek deals with morality a lot but it's not the exclusive focus on the show, and as they're all written by teams of writers, it can be very inconsistent. Voyager especially.

Use pic related to decide where to start, you'll probably end up going back to anything you skip when you're invested enough in it.

>>86859811
It was actually because they couldn't think of anything for her to do. War episodes would be no problem, but they'd struggle the rest of the time, or risk making the show too serialised by bringing that into every episode.

watch either the Original Series or The Next Generation first. TNG is easier to get into tho the first season is weak and the second is so and so (has some goat episodes tho). After that it's great. Then watch Deep Space 9, great show as well, tho different in style from TOS and TNG. After that the quality drops a lot. You might enjoy Voyager, but I found it boring as fuck. If you didn't grow up with it then I doubt you'll enjoy it as well. Enterprise was kind of in a bad position - first two seasons were shit but it got better. But it only had 4 seasons (last episodes being a huge fuck you).

The episode is from Voyager, but Voyager is an inconsistent mess because the writers didn't give a shit.

For example, if you watch the OP episode (Tuvix) then Captain Janeway says
>"There's nothing wrong with killing someone in order to save someone else"
but if you watch Phage (>>86859180) then Captain Janeway says
>"Killing someone to save someone else is reprehensible and entirely unacceptable."

>apparently full of Federation citizens happy to

I like to think of Picard as an intensely political figure within the Federation and Star Fleet.

Raised at the literal heart of the Empire relatively next door to the imperial capital.

There is a reason a man like that ends up as Captain of the Federation flagship. His politics fit the bill. Everywhere he goes is a projection of power by the Federation and it is always the insidious 'soft' power play.

>also dat 'For You' from Garek

If this type of 'insider' exists within the Federation (we see families, generational members of Starfleet, judges, the Trill) then there has to be an 'outsider'.

Someone who loses the game. We never really see a story about them. How they some bump along within the Federation 'order' of things. We see glimpses. Bashir and his parents. The Syndicate. Even as early as Tasha Yar and her back story.

Always at the edges but never in full focus. Would love to spend some time in that world. Right after the Dominon War would have been the perfect time to explore. But no. We will never see it.

The most weird part is that fed citizens don't use money and full employement is part of the federation constitution, so how does it come that you can bribe a starfleet officer or even create a criminal organisation inside the federation. And even if the orion syndicate operate outside federation territory why would any human want to live on a planet full of mobsters and criminals when he can just take the first transport to earth ?
>>
>>86871771
You need money to buy anything the Federation can't or won't provide you for free, like non-replicated goods, or anything at all from non-Federation planets. And hookers.
>>
>>86871771
I'm guessing that being a Federation Citizen must be a very basic existence. We have only really seen the upper class of Starfleet and not really the average joe.

He sends the bill to the federation which covers all the expenses

Unexplained, fan consensus is they must be getting a stipend from Starfleet as they were deployed outside Federation territory.

They were employed by the bajoran government who probably paid them which was put back into the stations economy.
>>
>>86873181
They weren't employed, they were requested to help and protect them, and Starfleet didn't charge Quark for rent or energy so I doubt they would to Bajoran nationals either, nor accept payment from the government, I'm not sure how the station could even be profitable other than attracting people who would then spent money on Bajor.

they had to reset things back to the way they were. it's just how serials work.

The concept was too expensive to keep using, that species won't show up again and got reworked into The Borg, though I don't think there's anything in-universe which connects the ideas up. How are you enjoying the show so far?

>How are you enjoying the show so far?
it's great, halfway through season 2 now
after having watched it with my dad as a toddler and understood nothing, it's rather refreshing to go back and actually enjoy the show for what it is-- it's just that the tonal shift from the rest of season 1 in Conspiracy caught me off guard
plus the fact that high-ranking star fleet officials getting controlled by alien brain parasites wasn't at least properly addressed in later episodes bothered me

Isn't the pon farr a neurochemical imbalance? I mean, I guess Vulcans can spread it via mind melding when attempting to initiate mating, but I would use the word "afflict".

Yeah, this is why you don't make another series of a franchise when the writers, etc, aren't into it and/or look down upon the material. I mean, it's not like you have to be a superfan, but you have to appreciate what makes a franchise good before you go about writing and creating new material to add to it.

The TNG Blu-Ray transfer is proof that us early millenials really did live in a golden era of sorts.

Other than some of the shit prosthetics, it's damned beautiful today as it was then.

Though, not sure which you are watching, assuming it's the Blu-Ray, do you have sound issues? I swear the music and effects on mine are far louder than the audio.
