I assume they have a reason for moving things forward, there must be some spot they want to get to this season. I'm interested what sort of stuff we'll see, if they'll just do this search engine stuff or go further ahead. Who knows where the actual finale will be? Maybe they'll end up bringing it to present day and everyone will look like pic related
>>
>>86811872
I don't think it's going to end well, but it might end with some disaster with a hint of hope. The series finale is called Ten of Swords, which is a tarot card according to google.

"The Ten of Swords is the Tarot's card of bottoming out. But this card is a blessing in disguise, as the darkest hours in which you suffer are about to give way to a new dawn. Indicating that you have reached bottom, there is nowhere to go but up when your Tarot reader draws the Ten of Swords. It ain't pretty."
>>
>>86811976
Ooooh very nice catch with the finale title. I can't believe the show's gotten a 4th season at all, I really thought it was toast, but I'm stoked we get another year of it. The music is so great.

Oh yes, I quite love the music. I have to admit I'm not as enthralled by the move to Silicon Valley as I thought I'd be when season 2 ended. I find I'm missing Texas and the 80's themselves, I almost wish they hadn't skipped over it.

Got this playing in the background right now so I figured I'd come here to ask

Because it's the truth. That's how fiction works. And how Doctor Who works.

No one before 2008 had thought up that beetle. No one before 2008 could write stories with that beetle in mind. You have to think from the real world perspective.
>>
>>86813477
Nobody had even mentioned continuity before you.
Anon's question wasn't about continuity, it was about the logic of now the monster in that particular episode worked. And the answer was in the episode.

>>86813711
It really isn't that difficult.
There is a monster in Turn Left that changes Donna's timeline and in doing so almost causes the destruction of the universe.
The question was "so if it's this easy to cause the destruction of the universe, why is there still a universe?". This is pertinent to the episode, not to "continuity", because the episode takes place inside the universe. t's that simple.

I am saying that Doctor Who has some degree of continuity, whether you like it or not, because it has ideas that have become fixed at the core of the show, like the idea that the Doctor is a Time Lord who comes from Gallifrey.
Saying
>it's a fictional show to which the idea of continuity and canon is anathemic
is both simplistic and wrong.

>>86814500
I agree with the Cornell essay, there is no single authority that gets to decide what counts. There are, however, the minds of the viewers.

I'll try to make myself clearer:
-saying "Doctor Who deosn't have a FIXED canon because there isn't an authority that gets to decide which stories count and which don't" is right.
-saying "the idea of continuity is anathemic to Doctor Who" is wrong, because you'd have to be an idiot to think that's the way Doctor Who works. Make that episode about the Doctor as a robot from neptune, and then try to explain to the confused viewer that it doesn't really matter if it contradicts everything he knows from the show because there is no "canon".
>>
>>86814720
I've been away for a bit are we actually planning a /who/ gurps?
>>
>>86814973
It's in very tentative stages cause I think people are still a bit on edge (heh) from the discord debacle but it looks like plenty of us are interested in the idea.

Nothing's actually planned yet though. I guess someone would need to write it/DM it? I haven't RPd before, not sure how it all works.

>>86814951
That linked Moffat DWM interview has some good points building off Cornell's essay too, especially the Doctor's name example. Kind of plays into your point about the difference between 'continuity' and canon.
>>
>>86814951
Okay good points we weren't disagreeing as much as i thought. I misused "continuity". My bad, as they say.
>>
>>86814801
>Is there like a planed narrative

Yup. The GM/DM/Whatever plans the chapter of the story that you as the characters are playing through, essentially, the location, plot, and NPCs. It's up to the people playing to go through that storyline as the characters they're playing. OF course, they can go through that storyline however they want, as long as they can justify it. They can even go massively off the GM's plan, but that also depends on how well the GM handles making shit up on the spot. It's kinda group fiction writing, in a way.

It's my fault, I made some confusion in my first posts.

I think the ideas of canonicity and continuity in Doctor Who are both quite complex to define, and I dislike the idea that there is a fixed canon of stories that "count" as much as the idea that "no story counts".

>>86815306
This brings to mind, it might just be an ironic/shitposting thing, but I noticed at TARDISposting they seem to have actual debates about canon, like arguing points for and against certain episodes being canon, and getting very heated about it. And it confuses me. If they're big enough fans to be arguing about Big Finish and Lungbarrow, surely they can't be unaware of Doctor Who having no official canon? Are they aware and they just completely reject the idea and impose their own idea of canon onto it? In that case why are they arguing about it, isn't that just butting their headcanons against each other? So much sound and fury but I really don't get what drives it.

I love Doctor Who's approach and I think it encourages a healthy relationship with media. I remember seeing plenty of people understandably being massively sad or angry when Disney "decanonised" a tonne of stories, and it just makes you think you know, in Doctor Who you'd be laughed out of the gate if you tried to do that. The stories are all there and no one can invalidate them to you.

It's something I really love especially about early Doctor Who. The Doctor and Susan are Time Lords, and they aren't. They are from Gallifrey, and they aren't. They predate the ideas but we connect them to them, but we don't have to either, it's fun to hold the different ideas in your head. The Doctor never blew up Gallifrey, but also, he did. Fellow McGann fans, why is Paul about to waste away in not just a soap, but one of the worst soaps? :-( Is it a favour to one of the producers? It makes no fucking sense. The guy is NOTORIOUSLY picky about what parts he tries for and which ones he takes. I can't imagine how Stephen McGann felt given his terrible experience with Emmerdale. Minor part, max earning perhaps? Ughhhh and this will affect our chances of ever seeing him perform plays of weight again.

>Could a bat companion work?
Neo, I am so pleased to inform you that Eight technically has TWO bat companions. In the tv movie, two bats are briefly seen when the Master enters the TARDIS, and the books expanded upon their existence a little, giving them names and featuring them a handful of times, like in this scene.

Moffat era was kind of ruined for me because of two characters who were insanely annoying and unengaging that I always was like "Oh, fuck off."
First it was River Song. At first I was okay with River because series 5 is fucking gold with Matt's best performance by a long shot, and I was just so blown away with epicness that River Song didn't ruin it. But then... Series 6 was focused entirely around River, and everytime I was just like "MOVE ON ALREADY". Then literally the same thing happened to Clara. Placeholder companion in series 7, with no personality at all except for being quirky etc. She made some huge progress in S8-9, but I still was under that impression. I just wanted her gone. I know that it's the point that she's bossy and stuff, I just didn't care about her developenent, I wanted to get free of her, and it was beyond my understanding that everyone just kept and kept relying of her so much. She was even the first companion ever which loss had driver Doctor mad and almost made him destroy fracture of time.

Do you know when McGann's contract ends? One con said it's for a year, another said it ends just before Christmas. Can't believe his agents would let him go down this route as he's too 'old' to bounce back from it, but maybe they're part of the issue.

Or maybe now McGann's back with his wife in Bristol, they spend all their time watching soaps and he thinks it's a good idea? When he lived with Susannah Harker in London, they were a big part of the London scene. Bristol's arts offerings are weak AF :(.

>you hate Doctor Who so much
reee
>sometimes write such kino essays
awww

>1. What's your stance on Clara being in TUAT?
Mildly disappointed about it, if it's true. Hell Bent was a very very definitive ending, and a lot of played off how many false endings she'd had before. Yeah yeah if she shows up in TUAT it won't be her 'ending', it will still be before her eventual death, but I feel seeing her again at all would kind of dull the impact a tad, as much as an episode 2 years later can, which isn't much I suppose. She span off into her own discrete version of Doctor Who at the end of Hell Bent, I feel like ever peeking behind the curtains and seeing it spoils it a bit.

HOWEVER she could always just show up as a hallucination thing like Amy did for 11, and I'd have no problem with that.

>2. How to you picture Clara's future overall?
The character herself I don't think will be shown again (except maybe TUAT), but I see as a Doctor figure in her own version of Doctor Who, going on adventures with Me, fighting the good fight, etc. Before eventually returning to Gallifrey in her own big version of a 'series finale' and getting taken back to Trap Street to die. I don't like to imagine her interacting with the Doctor or anything from Doctor Who really again, it works best for me to imagine her as a completely separate thing by that point. It's a big universe out there, and if writers try to squeeze short stories about her and Me, or Briggs impersonates her on The Clara Oswald Chronicles, I'll reeeee.

>Or maybe now McGann's back with his wife in Bristol
Is he back with Annie? Aww, I hope so. That's cute.

Anyway, I'd say "maybe he's a fan of Holby City" but he himself has said that he doesn't really watch tv apart from sports stuff, so I doubt that's the case. But a soap isn't necessarily a career killer, and maybe he's just doing it because he thinks he'll enjoy it. If he doesn't, he can leave at any time, really. I'm sure he'll be okay, and I'm sure he's happy with his new role, even if it's not what you or I would've chosen for him.

but it is completely different. watching that 20min youtube video would be a passive act, taking in the opinions of someone i have never interacted with in a completely one way style

talking on /who/ is an active act, exchanging opinions with some anons and trips ive interacted with before, in a two-way style

i personally value the latter more. and regardless, they are two very different mediums with different styles. not really comparable. its like saying playing a board game for 2 hours is comparable to watching a 2 hour film, beyond the most superficial "leisure activity time" measure, theyre nothing alike

reading sandifers post on love and monsters when

>It is, of course, a story about Doctor Who fandom - the crowning irony of its somewhat rocky reputation among that fandom. It’s a story about the freaks and weirdos who found community and life in the absurd thing that is Doctor Who. It’s about gay workaholics who learned the pleasures of unrequited love from it. It’s about clever Scottish jokesters who learned not to be an asshole. It’s about men who are slightly socially uncomfortable when not in a Victorian ghost story, about self-deprecating playwrights who rely on their honesty about their anxiety being read as a joke, about awkward feminist Anglicans with a pagan streak. And more than that. It’s about overweight bloggers who washed out of academia, and queer midwestern middle-aged mystics. About trans Google engineers who worship Freija and bisexual Big Brother bloggers who read Avengers comics and pretend they’re about other things. Polyamorous hypnofetishists and southern anarchist philosophy professors. Weirdo visionaries who write about My Little Pony, David Bowie, Star Trek, and the Beach Boys. The entire community, from the cadre of people faithfully reading every day so they can snigger like schoolboys on tiny forums about how much they hate the blog, to the large number of people who only ever read the book versions and whose names I’ll never know. It’s about all of us, and our strangeness, and our obsessions, and the holy and sacred mystery of getting out of bed every morning. And about weird lip-licking absorption monsters and sex with paving stones. Because that’s how it works.

>Certainly, the fact that Ursula the paving slab is literally a woman Elton can walk all over implies the entire idea is structured as a joke.

Good God! How on earth did you come up with that angle?

The fact that Ursula ends up on a paving slab is simply a consequence of the Abzorbaloff splattering and ending up soaking into whatever the floor happens to be made of. If it had happened indoors she would have ended up as a carpet square or parquet flooring. Because liquids always end up on the floor when you drop them.

RTD for all his many, many, many, many, many, many, MANY faults has never shown the slightest hint that he has a misogynistic bone in his body, and is the least likely person to have deliberately come up with a metaphor like that.

Gallifrey Base after this ep was full of such comments, each poster seeming to out-do the other with theories of how appalling this ending was in it's perceived treatment of a woman. Sometimes a line is just a line, and there isn't an agenda behind it. Sometimes we know the joke we want to tell will annoy some people, but since it will make the other 90% laugh we just can't pass up the opportunity, and we hope that the other 10% will be strong enough to take it, secure in the knowledge that when the next joke comes along, they'll be in the 90%.
