there are probably others like you, so one of you has to bite the bullet or you'll never find other folks with your interests. and then the darkest timeline would involve you setting one up and the favourite doctor of every single one that joins is 10

You basically can't buy it, unless you want to shell out £100+ for a wrinkled secondhand copy off eBay. Fortunately it was a free ebook on the BBC website for a long time (complete with new illustrations and author notes, so that version's superior anyway)

>Fear me, I've killed hundreds of Time Lords
>Fear me, I've killed all of them
GOAT line, especially coming off Series 5 being the best by far hype levels were off the charts.
The trailer for Series 6 Part 2 was also pretty hype inducing since we hadn't seen Let's Kill Hitler yet and there was still a chance that all of the set-up for the explanation of The Doctor's death would be worthwhile and not be the most bullshit solution. River being the Astronaut was so obvious that I thought she was a red herring and that Rory was going to be the Astronaut in a twist since we had just seen Rory go full Roman Rambo in A Good Man Goes To War (which could've applied to him as well). Could you imagine instead of River being forced into the Astronaut Suit at the end of Closing Time it was Rory?

and that the silhouette of the person next to the shed at Lake Silencio was actually related to the resolution of the mystery?

nah dude it's clearly a person, you don't even need to zoom in to see it either. It's not like the Loch Ness Monster, that's obviously a person.

Plus don't you remember the "continuity error" in Flesh and Stone where the Doctor appeared to Amy in the forest without his jacket and told her not to worry and to trust him, even though he was wearing his jacket in the scene before and the one after? And it turned out to be him from the future in The Big Bang? Quality Moffucking no one ever talks about. Anyway, with shit like that in Series 5, it wasn't out of the question for the shed guy to be important later on.

You have to remember that this was back when Moffat was a good writer with only 1 or 2 missteps.
>>
>>86792273

I knew someone would bring up the jacket and be completely blind to how much of a difference there is between "the doctor is visibly wearing the wrong item of clothing" and "there is a tiny black blob occupying a negligible area of screen space which can literally only be seen if you freeze frame and zoom in".
>>
>>86792341
Well it turned out to be no one so I guess it was just a crew member holding up a cardboard cutout of a shed or something because BBC budgets, but I remember there was some convoluted primer-tier theory back during Series 6 that The Doctor went to Lake Silencio during the period of time in Let's Kill Hitler where he was poisoned and alone in the TARDIS in a scene that seemed to imply he had a trick up his sleeve. The episode also made a point to say he had like 23 minutes to live or something specific, and it felt too important to not be related to the mystery.

Like I said, we had high expectations of Moffat. No one thought the solution would literally just be "The Doctor didn't die it was just a robot introduced halfway through the season with The Doctor shrunk down inside the robots eye" because that's so absurdly anticlimactic it couldn't possibly be that.
Oh well.

>>86792450
m8 it's not even zoomed in, watch that scene right now in full screen and it's clear as day there's a person there.
>>
>>86792370

JB has a buy 1 get 1 free sale on this month for most of their classic Who. I'm using it as a chance to pick up several of the more pricey ones like Power of the Daleks, Tenth Planet etc.

Just wondering if the dvds for Attack of the Cybermen, Visitation and some others are worth ordering. Haven't seen them but they have an extras disc. Anybody have those releases? Was thinking about trying to get every Cyberman story since I have quite a few of them already. Also is Web of Fear top-tier Troughton?

Yeah, a chart would be cool given how confusing the Faction Paradox range looks to someone new. I'm done more or less with my shit trip entry. It jst has to be typed up. However, Upon proof reading it, it seems a bit thin. I have ideas for 3 or so little scenes that I can pretty easily work in to fill it out, including a bit kinda involving a bit of a meme. Could probably include those and knock it out and have it ready to submit by tomorrow evening. Tomorrow morning/afternoon if you want those scenes discluded and as is? lmk I suppose. Going to put a gun to Belle's head and try and get a couple of illustrations out of her for it, by then too.

>apart from occasionally not being able to focus on them
I struggle a LOT with my attention span when listening to audios, so here's my recommendation for that: grab a video game with no story, not much text to read, just pretty visuals and/or mindless tasks to do. It'll give you something to do with your hands while you listen, gives you something to look at, but doesn't distract you from the audio itself. Honestly, it works wonders.

My recommendations are:
>No Man's Sky
on creative mode! a good choice because it's flying around in space and exploring planets, very fitting for Doctor Who, and it's much improved with new updates so it's better visually and in terms of gameplay itself
>Viscera Cleanup Detail
a cleaning simulator, basically. go look it up if you haven't heard of it. it's as tedious and mindless as you could imagine, but ridiculously addictive. also is mostly sci-fi (albeit... with blood and gore) so thematically appropriate
>Stardew Valley
this one probably requires a bit more thought than the other games initially, when you're setting up your farm, and there's more text to read if you're doing anything other than tending to your crops, but a good alternative all the same

Can't think of any others right now, but maybe one of those three will help you out if you feel like you'd need an extra something to help you focus!
>>
>>86799452
I'd rather have a tragic ending than a tragic continuation.

capaldi is my favorite doctor of nu-who by far. he goes beyond all of the fake "timey wimey wibbly wobbly" saccharine crap and acts like an actual human being (although he is obviously not actually a human you know what i mean)

i always see people say there is another level to matt smith and david tennant's doctors with them supposedly covering up their underlying pain and guilt with over-exaggerated quirkiness and happiness but i personally never felt that, all i got was the happiness and none of the deeper levels.

it might sound like i dislike those other two's series but i am a fan of them. capaldi is just leages ahead of them. he has real depth.

>What do you think the potential Fox reboot of DW would've been like if the movie had been better received?
Couldn't fit this in my other post, but basically: I don't think it would've been good, purely based on the proposed storylines for it that we've seen floating around the internet. Paul would've been amazing, and would've shone in the part as always, but the rest of it probably would've fallen flat. Or, at the very least, would've been a huge deviation from what we'd previously known. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I fear some of it would get lost in translation from page to screen.

If we had gotten Big Finish storylines, or the book EDA storylines instead... Well, Eight's stories, as they exist right now, on page and in audio, shine in a way that they could never have on tv. Those formats leave the visuals up to the imaginations of the reader/listener, and can't be constrained by budget in the same way. At least half of the concepts and worlds that Eight's stories explored would've been absolute shit in a visual format, because they didn't have the technology nor money to make it look good, or to show it to the extent those ideas deserved. But still, those storylines - even not shown to their fullest potential - would've been a hell of a lot fucking better than the mess that Fox wanted to write.

Still would've watched it all for McGann, tho.

Join the club. If he ends up being your favourite Doctor like he is mine, it's a terrible time trying to find people that, first of all, have seen the movie, then it's even harder to find people in that demographic who've listened to the audios, and it only gets worse when you narrow it down further to the books and the comics.

It sucks particularly if he not only becomes your favourite Doctor, but one or more of his companions are amongst your favourites too. Like, I absolutely adore Sam Jones, but there's barely another soul on this fucking earth who knows who she is. And then when I do find people that know of her, most of them hate her. (I don't know why, honestly? But they do.)

But, anyways, this is a terrible welcome package to becoming a fan of the Eighth Doctor, I know. To say he's the most underappreciated Doctor is putting it very, very lightly, but it warms my heart whenever someone new gives him a chance. *shakes your hand* I'm the resident McGann fan on /who/, so if you ever want to discuss him, literally just mention his existence and I'll probably crawl out from between the floorboards and explain to you my passions.
>>
>>86799539
The fuck are you talking about?

Ar least theres still a potential for a crappy continuation to get good. A shitty ending is just a shitty ending. No one goes out and says "You know what? I think I'd prefer a sad handjob that leaves me limp and the skin on my dick raw instead of being in this crappy relationship where I get laid once in a while."

You know why no one says that? Because they're not fucking idiots. Also, an ending that erases the entire season of character development for most of your main characters so you can have oc romance and pairing up the blacks together so you can have racial purity isn't an ending; its a Doctor Who set continuation of My Immortal.
>>

>The cast for these adventures can be confirmed, including Novice Hame (now a Senator!) returning, played by Anna Hope, Sister Jara, the biological sister of Sister Jatt, played by Adjoa Andoh, and Yasmin Bannerman playing the sapling of her character Jabe from the second episode of Doctor Who. Sapling Vale is like her ancestor, strong-willed, fair minded and resourceful.

The Jodie interview from DWM

some choice quotes

>“You’ve got this wealth of information out there,” she continues. “There aren’t many jobs where you’re lucky enough to have a whole back catalogue like that. But Chris wouldn’t have cast me as the Doctor because he wanted me to repeat anything that had gone before. And I think as a fan you don’t want to watch something that’s an imitation of something that’s gone before. Or what would be the point of recasting?”

>“One of the best things about the role is that all the other Doctors have brought so many exciting elements to it. It’s brand new each time, and there aren’t those rules in place that say you have to behave like this or speak like that. That’s so liberating and exciting for me as an actor. I have the ultimate freedom in approaching the role – the same freedom that every previous Doctor has had.”

>It is the first time a woman's played it, but in a way it’s not a woman playing the part, is it? It’s a brand new body, and the body happens to be female. It’s not about redefining it away from anything that’s gone before, but this is a brand-new journey for me and for everyone.”

>“It’s such a precious, important role"

>"Of course I’m not ‘it’ yet – Peter [Capaldi] is still the Doctor. But I’m incredibly excited about the fun and opportunity that’s out there. I feel like a kid in a toy shop. I feel like I’m five years old. In a good way – not a terrifying way!”

>"I cannot wait to join this amazing world that you guys, the readers, are already part of. To the people that have been here a long time, and to the new people that I hope are coming, I just want to say that I’m going to work so hard and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it. Thanks for your support!”
>>
some more interesting bits

>What does our new Doctor mean for Doctor Who?

>“I’m utterly delighted,” Mark Gatiss tells Doctor Who Magazine. “She’s a fascinating and unexpected choice, and I can’t wait to see where she takes the TARDIS next. This is a wonderful new era for our beloved programme. Here we go again!”

>Fellow writer and Doctor Who fan Paul Cornell says the casting of a female Doctor will result in “an enormous opening night. I also think it means an entirely new audience,” and adds that change of this type is “what Doctor Who is for.”

>Does a female Doctor present new narrative opportunities? Jenny says no. “Just some pronoun difficulties I’m already running into.”

>But, when she travels into Earth’s history, the Thirteenth Doctor will surely visit some time
periods where her gender will impact upon how she is perceived. As Paul Cornell puts it: “I suppose in the Victorian era, we won’t be able to get the walkin-like-you-own-the-place thing. But that’s about the only plot function I can see. I really, really trust Chibnall with this, actually. I think half-an-hour of riotous gender-based comedy is probably not where it’s going to go!”

>Jan Vincent-Rudzki, founder of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, has a specific approach in mind. “With the Doctor becoming female, does that mean the character automatically becomes feminine?” he wonders. “This seems an easy option.” He draws comparison to Matt Smith’s portrayal “of an old man’s mind in a young body”, and wonders if a similar kind of identity crisis could work for the thirteenth incarnation. “The Doctor has always been a very masculine character, so what aspect of that, if any, will survive the sex change? Indeed, what does male and female mean in Time Lord society and biology?”

>We asked Nick Briggs – executive producer at Big Finish Productions – how he would brief his writers if they were introducing a female incarnation. His take would be largely gender-blind. “I’d say, ‘Let’s make her the Doctor, and that’s the main thing.

>But let’s not be stupid and ignore situations where her gender might come up’. However, I don’t think we should be doing scenes every week where some military officer says, ‘Get me a coffee love’. I’d want to avoid the sameness of that.”

>Nick speaks from experience. In 2003, he brought in Arabella Weir to play the Time Lord for the production Exile, part of the company’s range of ‘Unbound’ alternate takes on Doctor Who.

>Today he confesses, “I think I made a lot of bad decisions on that. At the time I thought, ‘I don’t want to do the “typical” thing, which is just to do a Doctor who is female and just does Doctor-y things.’”

>Instead, he portrayed this incarnation as chaotic, comedic and a bit of a drinker. “It was appalling, really. I’m quite ashamed of it… It feels like it was from another era. I would never wish anyone to judge me on all those ill-made decisions. “And it’s such a shame, is it not, that we didn’t do a really good female Doctor who we could have written further adventures for, like we did with [fellow ‘Unbound’ Doctor] David Warner. I’ve regretted that for quite some time.”

>Christel Dee, of Doctor Who: The Fan Show, also appreciates that “there are people who’ve got used to the Doctor being a certain way. Ironically, Doctor Who is a show about change, but unfortunately, human beings are creatures who resist change.”

>Nick Briggs counsels we should display “compassion”, but adds: “It worries me that, if, say, a black actor had been cast, a lot of people who might have thought that was a bad idea would have been too ashamed to say so. Whether that’s right or wrong, that’s a whole other debate. However they’re not too ashamed to come out and say they don’t want a woman.”

>“I think in the entire history of the world, no one has ever been able to stop a story from changing,” says former showrunner Russell T Davies, who was there, 13 years and one day ago. “Because that’s all Doctor Who is – a fictional story, and stories always change. If you stand there and try and stop it, you will never win.”

unrelated to Jodie, some other neat stuff:

>Nicholas Briggs has voiced all the iterations of the Cybermen on television since 2006, and in audio adventures since before that. So did either Peter or Steven discuss with him the appeal of the Mondasian versions?

>“I’m not sure,” admits Nick. “I’ve had many conversations with both of them about old Doctor Who stuff. Steven and I got into a big discussion about Nightmare of Eden [1979], and Peter and I discussed Death to the Daleks [1974] and The Ark in Space [1975] quite a lot. I’m sure we must have talked about The Tenth Planet Cybermen at some point, but nothing directly relating to this story.”

>Nick has previously said that of all the creatures he’s voiced in Doctor Who – notably the Daleks but also the Judoon, Nestene Consciousness and Ice Warriors – the Cybermen are the hardest to perform. They’re meant to be emotionless, but he has to convey some emotion so that they don’t sound flat and lifeless.

>“The sing-song aspect of the Mondasian Cybermen certainly makes it easier to avoid the monotonous danger-zone the Cybermen can fall into, vocally,” he says. “It gives you a sort of random-emotion springboard. So they don’t sound emotionless or emotional, they just sound as though they have no regard for emotion. I think that rather suits the Cybermen.”

also pic attached is a cute talalaly/briggs interaction

*season 27
and it's not that good, because most of season 27 never made it to the scripting stage, which means that they're all brand new stories by Big Finish based on very loose storylines.
Also Ace doesn't even leave because of their stupid need to keep it in liine with their own continuity.

>Oh, it's funny, writing stuff about the Doctor's past. You always have to leave options - you can't be definitive. Or at least that's how I feel about it. I like the audience to have a choice. If, in Listen, you're happy that the little boy in the bed is the Doctor, then great. But if you're not, that's fine too. I keep saying, Head Canon is important, because that's where the show really happens: in the hearts and minds of all the people watching.

>As I type, I realised where my reticence comes from, and I can't resist telling you. A few years ago I wrote an episode called The Name of the Doctor, and when that title was rolled out, oh the ripple of fear that went round fandom. Were we really going to give the game away? The central secret of Doctor Who? The answer to the oldest question?

>Well, no, of course we weren't. As if! And you know what? If we'd been daft enough to do that, the audience would have ignored us anyway. Just like the last time it happened - because it did, you know. Oh, I remember.

>There's a Tom Baker story called The Armageddon Factor, and sometime during it, the Doctor runs into an old friend from Gallifrey called Drax. And shockingly, right in the middle of a story, with no fanfare or fuss, we found out the Doctor's real name. No really, that was a thing that happened.

>Ready for it? The name of the Doctor? Okay.
Theta Sigma.

>Yeah, rubbish, isn't it?

>But here's what happened - the audience turned politely away, and ignored it. If Head Canons had doors you'd have heard every one in the world slam shut in that moment. Just a great big, "Nope, you're not allowed to do that!"
In later years, the show got in line with its audience, and 'Theta Sigma' was retconned away as a nickname in The Happiness Patrol, but the lesson remains: showrunners beware, your powers are weak.

>If you ever doubt that Doctor Who belongs to its audience before anyone else, remember the case of Theta Sigma.

>keep it in liine with their own continuity.
I don't understand what they're doing with these continuity wise. I've only listened to a few.
In the interviews for one of the 6 stories, they mention that the doctor was originally written as pompous and mean or whatever his shtick was but they changed it so that it's more in line with the character developed "he's nice now" big finish version even though it takes place before that happens.
