It could be done and done well in the right hands and with Wolfe on board (this is unlikely though given his age at this point...I'm honestly surprised he's still alive).

You would need someone who has a track record of not giving a fuck about what mainstream hollywood thinks as well as someone who understands dense symbolism and subtlety. The best choices which come to mind would be Cronenberg, Gibson, Jeff Nichols, Malick, and Lynch. Lynch may actually be the best choice for this project, as he understands symbolism and could be the only one who could translate the intense subtlety needed to adapt the work without totally giving away everything through straight visuals. Gibson would't be a bad choice, given his familiarity with Catholicism (a fundamental component of BotNS) and his ability to capture the violence necessary. Gibson directed torture scenes in the Matachin Tower would be kino. But Gibson hasn't shown he can do symbolism or subtlety to the degree needed for this project.

Happened while MGM were going thorough bankruptcy. Del Toro was on for director and wanted to do 1 to 2 movies tops. Got sick of pushback from executives and said fuck it. Left.

In a desperate bid they called Jackson and begged him to do it. He had no time and had to basically wing a massive trilogy in a matter of weeks. Whereas the Lotr trilogy had years and years of planning and oversight with unlimited budget.

It's not Jackson's fault it was so shit. He did what he could with what he had. It's amazing the first two turned out as okay as they did. The third was blatantly a middle finger to the studio and a non-stop CGI shitfest.
