Wrong. Seams started showing by season 7. It was still good, but you can sense it starting to decline then.

I'd say the first 9 seasons are superb, 10 is great, and then onwards it's pretty average (for the most part). The first 10 seasons are where it's at.

I would say there's a decline in quality before that but it's definitely still watchable and good in seasons 11-15.

I'd say the biggest drop in quality actually came with the animation change, after that there was no saving it.

The Simpsons peaked at 30 million viewers and now they struggle to get 3.5 million people watching any new episode.

For me, that's exactly why. I had barely grasped the concept of bowel control when the simpsons stopped being in its "golden age". I grew up with seasons 12-16 before my interest waned and was eventually killed off entirely by that sadgasm episode.

When I looked back at what had once been in seasons 1-4, it was almost shameful that I ever enjoyed episodes like "All's Fair in Oven War" and "Jaws Wired Shut".

I would argue that the decline was noticeable in season 5. A few stinkers notwithstanding such as "The Crepes of Wrath", The Simpsons was fairly grounded in realistic scenarios. Season 4 started to push it a bit and then season 5 just went all out. Homer goes to space! Bart gets an elephant! Homer and a few others were one of the biggest bands around for a brief period of time and yet nobody else seems to remember it! Gambling was legalized and casinos were built overnight, then completely abandoned and forgotten about just as quickly!

Not to mention some of the earliest appearances of Jerkass Homer. You had statements in previous seasons such as "just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't notice", but never anything as contemptible as making fun of Marge for her gambling addiction or spending an entire episode berating Bart before nearly getting everyone killed over and over.
