Why are there so few horror movies truly great? The only one that I can think of is Rosemary's Baby, or maybe Repulsion. Nothing else really comes close to any of the other great movies.
>>51422241
>The only one that I can think of is Rosemary's Baby, or maybe Repulsion
>Santa Sangre
>Don't Look Now
>Videodrome
>Fly
>Dead Ringers
>Eyes Without A Face
>Suspiria
>Angst
Either your a pleb who needs to watch more or you are b8in me. And these are only first that come to my mind.
>>51422241
There are good horror movies.
I think they eventually fall victim to studios wanting the same cliche bullshit because they think it's what the public wants (and maybe they are right, to a degree).
>>51422241
sometimes I feel I'm the only person who didn't like Rosemary's baby
don't get me wrong, I don't mind old or slow-pacing films, in fact I loved the Shining, but Rosemary's - just found it tedious
>>51422472
You should give Repulsion a try. Same director, same pace, but there's not a second to breathe in the entire film. It's an incredibly claustrophobic movie that makes your skin crawl for the duration.
>>51422241
Evil Dead (2013) was surprisingly good. The classics are great too, but you have to be a fan of the style.
Any Cronenberg generally, as previously mentioned.
Alien, etc.
>>51423170
>Evil Dead (2013) was surprisingly good.
>>51423253
it was quite okay. if you dont like it, you never got the first three.
>>51423392
>you never got the first three.
Stop.
>>51422241
no-one here can seriously claim to have disliked pic related, surely?
one of the few horror movies that truly scared me
>>51423439
I love all the classics except for this one.
Sometimes Kubrick pulled it together and crafted something brilliant (Dr. Strangelove, 2001, etc) and other times he'd make silly, incomprehensible garbage (pic related, A Clockwork Orange, etc).
Jacob's Ladder
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
>>51423570
Romero is shit
>>51423439
Fantastic movie, but I didn't find it scary or suspenseful in the least bit. Absolutely, pitch perfect movie in every other way, though.
>>51423610
I should have said the Tom Savini 90s remake
>>51423544
I don't know why so many people like A Clockwork Orange.
I know you're full of shit and a pleb if you say your favorite Kubrick is A Clockwork Orange
>>51422241
>The Thing
>The Fly
>Videodrome
>The Shining
>The Evil Dead
>A Nightmare on Elm Street
>Halloween
>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
>Hellraiser
>Poltergeist
>The Exorcist
There are tons of great horror movies, OP.
>>51423610
Fuck you, the first 3 Of the Dead films and Creepshow are great.
>>51423544
>Sometimes Kubrick made silly, incomprehensible garbage (the shining, A Clockwork Orange, etc).
holy jesus fucking christ on a stick, pls stop pretending you like movies
>>51422241
Look harder, anon.
>>51423751
I fucking hate campy shit, and I still loved Creepshow. I never thought, in all my life, that I would ever be afraid of Leslie Nielsen.
I was like, "Leslie Nielsen in a horror movie? Surely, you must be kidding me!"
The Subspecies series
criminally under rated
>>51423253
>durr hurr I'm a contrarian fagoot
Like all things, /tv/ loved the new Evil Dead for the first couple months, and now shits on it a year later. Can't say I'm surprised.
>>51424318
Discerning hipsters from /tv/ drink Pabst Blue Ribbon.
>>51422472
I have the same problem...
>>51422241
> Why are there so few horror movies truly great?
that's utter bullshit
>>51424117
I'm not, and don't call me Shirley.
>>51422241
angel heart
the objective
resolution
jacobs ladder
>>51423610
>Night of the Living Dead
>Dawn of the Dead
>Day of the Dead
>Creepshow
>The Crazies
Romero used to be great.
>>51424318
You're right, my opinion is solely based on the /tv/ lexicon. It's impossible for me to think that an unnecessary, hollow remake was mediocre.
>>51425092
everything but drag me to hell
I like you anon I'd replace drag me to hell with phenomena
>>51423751
When I said "first 3 Of the Dead" films I was referring to Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. It wasn't until just now I realized people might think I was saying Land of the Dead is good.
Just dropping in to remind you the Suspiria is a bad film.
Pretty sets and good sound don't prevent the film from being dull as fuck.
>>51425092
Drag Me to Hell is good but I would take it out and put in John Carpenter's The Thing.
>>51425248
the first 3 are classic, the latest ones, meh
what did you think of the savini remake of the original in the 90s
i love that movie
>>51425280
for some reason i hate drag me to hell and i gen like his movies
it just seemed too cliche and cheesy
that and disliked the actress
>>51425297
>the first 3 are classic, the latest ones, meh
Agreed.
>what did you think of the savini remake of the original in the 90s
I haven't watched it, does it improve upon the original?
>>51425116
You're a good man, Anon.
this is considered one the greatest in the adult world
NOT the remake
>>51425280
I would've put in The Thing it's just that i only have 9 spots.
>>51423439
I love this film but I dont get it when people say its terrifying
Suspenseful yeah but thats about it, the only really disturbing part was pic related
fuck knows what this was meant to mean but it freaked me out
>>51425398
You mean the remake that made everything that was suggested and hinted at and made it real, while also taking all of the subtext and putting it right at the surface?
>>51425338
savini gore, color and is genuinely scary
still have the vhs
>>51425496
Sounds fun, I'll check it out sometime.
>>51425398
this
>>51425427
it's more disturbing than scary
>>51425427
this damn scene
>>51425269
I loved Jessica Harper's performance, the look, the setup and all that, but yeah the film is pretty lame story wise.
>>51423439
Stupid movie. Why did he say that his name is Johnny when it's really Jack? Did he thinks his wife and kid would be fooled?
>>51422241
my favorites:
Mulholland Drive
Antichrist
Funny Games
Rosemary's BabyThey Live!
Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht
>>51425687
argento did so much for us including teen jennifer connelly
>49 replies, no one's brought up the Babadook yet
>>51425883
get the fuck out with your teenage popcorn shit nigga
also Inland empire this fucking face at the end tops it all off
>>51425269
Considering that there are so many great horror movies coming out of Australia these days, why haven't they made any monster movies? You'd think that would be almost automatic, what with their wildlife situation and all.
>>51426454
they're used to every piece of wildlife trying to kill them
>>51426454
>monster movies
we don't really have many monster myths to work with other than the yowie (bigfoot) and the bunyip (swamp bigfoot)
>>51426576
Doesn't have to come from a myth or anything like that. Make something up, or use the natural wildlife.
>>51426637
its been tried a few times, but other than Razorback they usually turn out pretty shit. like >>51426567 said, monster movies don't have much effect on people who face death by nature on a regular basis.
>>51426637
>>51426576
>>51426803
You guys could prolly do a shark movie better than anyone or a crocodile film
Seen some aussie indie movies that were good about crocs
Wolf Creek and Snowtown still are my fave aussie flicks sans Mad Max
>>51426962
You should see the Loved Ones. Aussie take on Jeffrey Dahmer.
>>51427369
will do
who's in it?
>>51427523
First movie from the director, name of Seam Byrne, starring Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and John Brumpton.
>>51425398
>all that voice over
>>51427627
on it
>>51423170
>>51423392
>>51424318
But it was super generic shit with no remarkable style or personality.
Truly horrifying. Wikipedia says Kubrick was so impressed he brought the director in to discuss editing.
>>51422241
>Rosemary's Baby
>good
Shut it, pleb.
Because horror is objectively the worst genre of fiction
>>51429999
13 year old detected
>>51426803
Picture related scared the shit out of me as a kid.
surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. although some say it's not technically a horror, what would it be classified as? drama?
>>51430286
mindfuck thriller
>>51430315
>>51430286
I think the acting alone would classify it as a god tier drama if it wasn't for the mindfuck aspects.
10/10 flick all around.
>>51430397
>>51430397
it's a great film, but more like hp lovecraft horror until the end
sam neil gave a hell of a performance too
>>51425883
>The Babadook
Fuck yeah!
I love it when Tim Burton and Johnny Depp get together. Great flick, anon!
>>51430397
christ i wanna hit her in the face after seeing this movie
>>51423544
i bet you think kubrick strayed from king's book too, and that's a bad thing
>>51425687
Fuck, such a qt 3.14
>>51430510
why?
>>51430286
>>51430397
Call me a pleb but I thought it was solid till the ending. Not sure how to quantify or qualify these, but I thought it was a shitty ambiguous ending. Its sometimes fine to leave some things up to the viewer's imagination but in this case it felt like it was a lazy "fuck it, we wrote ourselves into a corner and cant think of an explanation for this" scenario.
>>51426576
>>51430509
Aw. It thinks it's clever.
>in the mouth of madness
>Twin Peaks FWWM
>Possession
>>51430808
cause she fucks a demon, a man and such while married to him
when he goes off on her he's the demon
>>51430956
it's like typical lovecraft made into film
>>51432775
Where is it written that fucking a demon counts as cheating?
>>51432486
In the Mouth of Madness fucking sucked and fuck all you people recommending it. Truly awful movie, and I normally like Carpenter and read all the Lovecraft stuff.
that movie is just shit.
OP, Alien is a great horror movie. Even though some of the scares are constrained by the movement of the alien suit itself, the atmosphere and tone of the movie is great.
>>51433002
>In the Mouth of Madness fucking sucked and fuck all you people recommending it.
>>51433002
I agree with you but I love it for Sam Neills performances and the nutters
thoughts?

That's a whole lot of orange. It needs some blue in there.

>>51434014
Hey, man. >>51433999 Just said your opinion is shitty.
>>51433830
the contrast between act 1 and the rest of the film is so fucking great.
hilarious film
>>51422296
Half of those are shit. And you forgot Jacob's Ladder and Alien
>>51425092
holy shit, that in the mouth of madness poster is awesome.
if we're talking about 'great' films that happen to be fall under the horror umbrella, and not necessarily the 'scariest'...
session 9 is vastly underrated on this board
28 days later is also regularly overlooked
these are the best, IMO...
santa sangre
videodrome
rosemary's baby
the thing
alien
28 days later
hausu
session 9
exorcist
and of course the slasher classics (TCM, original NoES)
my #1 is 28 days later. i really do think it's a special, special movie. made with a LOT of heart.
>>51429999
you wear the quads of a pleb babby
Does anyone else find The Exorcist like... not scary at all?
>>51434703
I fapped to Linda Blair in that once.
>>51434727she's my cunnyfu
>>51433002
Carpenter only brings the monsters at the end for five seconds.... WHY?
>>51434703
I did when I was a believing Catholic.
>>51434703
>Does anyone else find The Exorcist like... not scary at all?

The Shining, Halloween, Evil Dead
>>51434784
this
to a catholic it's spooky
all that imagery
it will only have been a few days since you saw/will see a priest
we had crucifixes on our walls
it spoke to the fears they instilled in me at church and school
>>51434796
>being scared of it because there are people in your life who tell you those things are real
>denying them
>denying that satan is even real
>that's what you think is the fedora move
I don't have to say "I reject Satan..." several times a year now. The fear is gone and it's nuts to believe it's anything other than the mature adult thing to do.
>nobody in this thread mentioning Kwaidan
get your shit together niggas.

if you understand the language it's on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=befqNyqwtmU
a lot of these movies are really well made/have interesting stories etc
but nothing SCARES me
That's what pisses me off the most is that nothing is so psychologically horrifying that it'll stay in your head for weeks or years you name it. All these movies are just really well made movies with a horror theme but nothing is actually scary. That's why I hate this genre, because whenever you ask for a scary horror movie you just get referred to the classics which are unsettling in some parts and rather interesting, but they're not scary.
>>51426576
I can think of a few ways to traumatize Australians.
>>51435375
>>51422241
Hello? Is anyone home? Is there anyone there??
>>51435375
I know the feeling, but I love horror movies, more for suspense reasons than actual horror.
I get hardcore panic attacks (which paralyze me in sheer terror) more than twice a week for no reason at all, something as simple as getting in my car, but I could watch the scariest film of all time and have a comfy night
Surely you're kidding.
>>51435488
>relies on shock scenes and gore
not really what I had in mind but thanks for the recommendation
>>51435679
it really bothers me you know, the only scene which I can think of that I had to look away from was the end scene from Rec
>>51435841
>the most frightening thing about Jacob Singer's nightmare is that he isn't dreaming.>it turns out that the whole thing was a dream.

Stop not getting them, then
>>51423816
branch out from your fedora approved watchlist, those are kubrick's worst by a mile
