I told you I would shoot but you did not believe what I was saying to you and that I would in fact do what it was I was saying

Literally about a hundred more.
>>51087995
Babies first westerns. Stroke all of them off, add The Ox-Bow Incident.
>>51088103
>>51088138
Added, thanks.
>>51088103
Meek's Cutoff sucked only a little worse then Homesman
The Professionals (1966)
>>51087861
The one with all the duels and then the girl shoots gene hackman
It was kind of dumb and didn't have much style.
>>51088259
Damn, babby's first Kelly Riechardt?
>>51088380
Yes but
>Leo Dicaprio as a punk kid who turns out to be Hackman's son
>Young Russell Crowe as the fearless badass gunning for Hackman
>Those duels
It was pretty good. The end kinda sucked though.
Sabata and The Big Gundown are good too if you like Lee Van Cleef. Both have great scores too.
>>51088138
talking shit about Leone?
whose the baby again
>>51088541
Yeah I liked it. Just not as much as the other stuff I've scene.
>>51088265
WAIT
>LEE MARVIN
>BURT LANCASTER
>ROBERT RYAN
HOW HAVE I MISSED THIS?!
Apalloosa was alright
>>51088509
Oh, you enjoy pointless stories with dumb characters? Then I highly recommend Homesman to you
>>51088873
It was about as good as your spelling.

Not every movie has to have some grand well-formed idea or storyline. Some movies could be about people who actually exist in a certain time period living their lives. Is there something wrong with trying to be authentic?
>>51087995
>>51088103
This and add :
For a Few Dollars More (I don't know why you didn't mention it)
Rio Lobo
Hang 'Em High
Joe Kidd
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Pale Rider
Silverado
And If you're a true fan of western you can purchase some decent tv shows about it :
Hell on wheels
Deadwood
Hatfields and McCoys
Dead man's gun
>>51088694
And Jack Palance.
It's good too, I'm not sure why it seems to be so unknown
>>51088541
>Those duels
You mean those stupid duels where it would show the guys shadow on the ground with a perfect circle with the sun shining through?
>>51089446
Dude don't mock Sam Raimi's distinctive visual style.
>>51089342
And Woody Strode
And Claudia Cardinale
>>51088265
If you enjoy Lancaster, have a look at Vera Cruz with Gary Cooper
>>51088380
The quick and the dead is breddy gud anon. It's a solid 7/10.
I like seeing Hackman playing a douchebag gunslinger. The man just talks shit so well its a pleasure to see him do it.
In my head I pretend the Quick and the Dead takes place on some kind of western purgatory and this is Little Bill from Unforgiven's judgement day.
Everyone's seen Shane before, right?
Holy fuck I love that movie. Everything except the low-functioning retarded little kid. Every time he does that slack jawed whistle I have to buy a new tv.
Hang em High.
Is it just me, or is the movie metaphorical as fuck?
The Best western will come on a white horse

Well it's only one of the most perfect Westerns ever, more than likely it's more complicated than "Clint guns people down for 90 minutes".

No results, shit thread...I'm out!

Unforgiven would have been a much better film if they didn't have that fucking reporter (aka Mr Exposition) shitting up almost every scene.

Best western soundtracks?

Leone is an entry level reddit-tier director. He's good, but watching his movies is hardly anything to brag about.
Dead Man up in the house.

MOST BASED WESTERN POSTER OF ALL-TIME
My Name is Nobody
It's more of a film about the death of a genre then the death of the west but damn is it great.
It took Italian westerns becoming popular, getting more and more violent, people getting sick of all the violence, a comedy sub genre popping up and people getting sick of that to make this movie.
The self parodying Morricone soundtrack is one of his best.
-The Searchers.
-the worst has to be Johnny Concho

Jack Palance's character is one of the best ever created for a Western.
>Prove it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx15l4L4Zlk
>that moment right after killing Mapache where everyone around them is stunned and they could leave peacefully but instead give other knowing nods and decide to go out guns blazing
One of the most subtle but powerful scenes I've ever seen in a Western. Peckinpah was a genius.
bump for Westerns
should go without saying that the remake of True Grit was a superb piece of cinema and writing.
Entertaining fantasy fluff. But still a better Western than some others.
Bears Repeatin'
What a pleasant surprise THIS movie was
Was this really a Western since it was about a Cowboy from the States shooting gunslingers in Australia in the 1800s?

I don't know if you're being sarcastic but this was the only Orci/Kurtzman movie that didn't completely suck.

Been to William S. Hart's villa. Tons of cool old props there. The guy really had a big hand in inventing the modern western.
>>51101180
>>51087785
Too bad nobody shot him.
>>51088380
I tried to rewatch that some time ago and couldn't go through with it. It's style reminded me too much of Wild Wild West. Fucking 90s!
>>51088639
Not only that, but about John Ford, which is ridiculous. Anon clearly doesn't know shit about film.
>>51100771
It isn't very good. Deadwood, however, is outstanding.
Friendly reminder, that The Criterion Collection has released two of Jack Nicholson's westerns. The Shooting is a low budget production with a nice idea and Rid In The Whirlwind is written by Nicholson himself an an splendid western for the time.
>>51100594
Yes. And so are bushranger films without any Yanks in them.
There is also this fine piece of the genre with fine Raquel Welch getting raped by Ernest Borgnine and her only wearing that poncho.Totally asking for it!
>>51087636
How many Louis La'mour books have been made into movies?
>>51093083
I reckon so.

Can you elaborate on your problems with it? And just look at Scorsese talking about it or read Ebert's review. There's thousands of pages of critiscm on the film.
>>51101935
Astounding scenery and wonderful pictures. A hard character, that isn't washed down for the masses liking and a thrilling ride to get the girls back.
>>51101950
It's okay. The villain is a bit too evil in some places and it makes it kind of goofy at moments to see people react to this guy in their environment. It's a moderate western I reckon, but nothing that stands out.
Official Western Directors Power Rankings
1. Sam Peckinpah
2. Sergio Leone
3. John Ford
4. George Stevens
5. John Huston
....
9001. Clint Eastwood
Does There Will Be Blood count as a western? I thought the first ten minutes were amazing, and then Paul Dano shows up...
>>51101951
that review doesn't really go into it much
The plot points just all seemed pretty terrible.
Up until the Indians attacking the homestead it seemed alright.
But then you get
>a fucking 5 year search
>Wayne letting some guy die when he tells him his gf was raped and murdered and lets him rush to an Indian camp alone THEN the parents of that man immediately forgive him for it.
>some girl is expected to wait 5 years for a guy because her only other option is some hillbilly retard
>somehow the injun lady can get faster to the tribe they're tracking on foot than they can on horseback
>again pretty much 5 years of nothing important happening just them riding horses in circles like morons until they get to the Buffalo herd in the winter
>they finally get to the Comanche after 5 fucking years of tracking and they have no plan they just sit there as the chief shows them he's been raping and brainwashing the girl for 5 years
>retarded, pointless wedding
>attack at dawn solves everything
>despite being brainwashed and raped for years the girl is magically all better at the end
why didn't they just send in the cavalry in the first place? I know it's the west and all, but really the whole "searching" part of the movie just seems like a waste of time for the characters seeing as they basically know 'where' the girl is the whole time, they just can't get to her because they are outnumbered.
>>51102193
John Ford is the greatest western director and this isn't even debatable.
>>51102193
>1. Sam Peckinpah
>>51088541
It ripped off Once Upon A Time In The West
>>51102121
>Can you elaborate on your problems with it
The vast majority of the movie is basically empty
You get all these great vistas in the beginning and a good setup. But then after the setup it's basically nothing that happens, certainly nothing interesting. They chase after the indians in circles for about 5 years and never get near them until the end. No character development, not much conflict(outside a romance sideplot) John Wayne just plays John Wayne and never does much with it. The supporting actor (the half indian guy) is just whiny the whole movie and never changes.
Not only that there's a whole "comedy of errors" routine that runs through the whole film and really makes it seem more farcical than epic.
>>51101764
>Raquel Welch getting raped by Ernest Borgnine
It's easy to forget how appallingly creepy he could be.
>>51102408
>John Wayne just plays John Wayne and never does much with it
I'm really surprised by this. It seems to me that *most* of the time he played superficially grouchy characters you just knew were really big old softies but not Ethan. I don't think you could be more right about John Ford's excruciating idea of what constituted comedy though.
>>51102546
>were really big old softies
I'd believe that if he actually killed Debbie maybe.
But even then he rescues her and brings her back. The only really shocking thing he ever did was scalp the chief and shoot the Buffalo, but even that is really only shocking by 50s standards. Most of what he does is pretty easily justified by the fact the indians killed off all but 1 of his closest family members.
Everything else he does just seems like him being a hardass like he always was.
