It's one of the most enjoyable films ever made and the perfect gateway to Star Trek, it's what I always show people who don't like Trek and it always gets them to reconsider.

The only reason people, including Mike, don't like it is that it fucks up Piccards character and plays fast and loose with the sci-fi elements. Also it introduces the Queen which weakens the Borg as an idea but makes the movie 100x times better than it woulda been.

Some sailing and BS forwarded: Maui was abandoned by his parents at his birth, was tossed into the sea to drown. It was a woman (an obvious dominant power of this setting) that had put all evil in motion. (Funnily, same is with Te Fiti)

After his misguided ways, Maui finally stole heart of Te Fiti and pinnacle of colonization finally cracked and had toppled into taboos (a funny reference to capitalism, great Depression and Crash of 2008 here).

So. Maui is a victim. A brutally abused, unloved male child, that did everything to please the (female dominated) world that had always shunned him. And guess what – after all the exile and all non-love he had suffered, another female pops up. Just strolls to him and demands of him to help her fix the shit. (for her to preserve her repressive position in her tribe)
And our victim – constantly latently desiring her acceptance and love, shoddily hidden by showing off and being loud – follows her like a well trained dog. They retrieve his fishook (his potence/balls is completelly in her domain) and return the stone. And this is where the tale of Moana really breaks down. Moana is – same as Te Fiti who Maui actually helps to appease – an archetype of woman. The ONLY way to bring back the balance, to »heal the world« would be for Moana to offer herself to Maui. To relenquish her position of village chief and to heal the wound, caused by her »sister« so long ago – the one who tossed Maui to drown. Of course, this does not happen. Moana is an independent, modern, strong girl, going on to pick some handsome prince-stud. But it's Mauis reaction, that is really sad. Like a child who created a bunch of imaginary persons, worlds even, he picks them up again (because nuthing must ever be demanded of »mummy« and she should never be challenged) and flies off in »animal forms« (his made-up realities in which someone perhaps loves him) and flies off, happy with his symbolical castration.

Moana sails off, an independant, strong, emancipated woman she is.

I guess this cartoon is a nice reflection of value of man in human society – no more then expendable shells to be used and discarded.

This thing is almost as bad as Kung Fu Panda in which the greatest victim, Tai Lon, is killed instead of being accepted while the master crippler Shi Fu contionues his brutal work (did a good job on Tigress too).

How did Maui not go insane just sitting on a small island for 1000 years?
