If you weren't watching Lost as it was airing live from an early season then you just don't understand. No show has ever had more discussion, theories, podcasts, recaps, been as much of a 'water cooler' show. NOTHING comes close.
Lost was more than a TV show. It was an event, a pop culture phenomenon. As soon as an episode aired you'd rush to thefuselage or lostpedia or some other forum to discuss the episode with others and struggle to post as the servers struggled to keep up. It was amazing, and no show has or ever will recapture the same feeling.
But don't feel too bad, because if you knew what it was like it would feel even worse knowing you will never experience something like it again, you can never go back.

Were you really here at the time? I don't really recall any real hardcore arguing. It was more just theories and memes.
The thing is nothing quite like Lost has come out since. That's why people still bring it up and herald it as one of the greatest moments of television history. It's not a perfect show, and there were definitely a lot of questionable things about the story and plot, but the good things about it and those that do work on the show were quite engaging.
