Why is this show so critically loved? It's legitimately awful. Not only that, it's more than 10 years too late. It's not even a culturally relevant takedown. We already had parodies making fun of it like the joe schmo show, joe millionaire. Every single thing that can be said about how fake and stupid the bachelor is was already said in s1 ep1 of flavor of love. Completely redundant.
The show is poorly directed/edited. Every episode there are is some baffling continuity error. For example everyone is in the control room watching a live date where they mention it's live and they have to get the shots correct/random jargon but you'll see crew members who are watching the live shot IN the live shot. Multiple times someone walks across the room then after shot reverse shot they walk across the room to the same position again. Very lazy editing. Half the time the adr doesn't even sound like the person they are dubbing. So much so a character should be asking "why did you just make a weird voice?". It's just baffling how someone let this through.
The reality show they are making is a clear bachelor satire/homage but it's all filmed in 3-6 weeks. Not too strange right? Wrong. It's also produced weekly but they have episodes every couple days. They talk about "last nights" ratings in one scene and later in that same episode which is supposed to be the same day they talk about "tomorrows" rating. What reality show takes weeks but also only a few days? The passage of time is one of the most important things to portray. It just comes across as lazy when you have conflicting accounts of how much time has passed in the same scene.

The character of Rachel is an enigma. The actress cannot emote. Now you may be tricked into thinking this was on purpose but it's not. She cries every episode because her life is just so hard and she's just so fucked up! She's a complete fuck up but she's just so competent that she never fucks up! She's a master manipulator who also gets manipulated every episode. She's a sex goddess that every man wants to fuck but at the same time a disgusting freak that no man could ever want. She's shrewd and cunning but also naive when the plot demands. This is the most inconsistent character I've seen in a very long time. She's -everything- simultaneously. This is just some weird self insert from a sad narcissist, not a character.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. Don't watch this show. Don't believe the hype. It's not good.

I also watched this show for a few episodes while expecting it to get good, which it didn't. In a way it was like watching Girls again, there was something that made me so mad while watching the show but the same infuriating feeling compelled me to keep on watching and keep getting madder. With Unreal it didn't really happen, it was like a copy of something else, so muted and shallow that you'd think that you're watching the behind the scenes of some reality tv show that has an incompetent staff.

Yea, I decide to watch the first season to see the praised and you're right. It's just really bland and the whole concept itself is dated and they don't see to be trying anything new with what they have.
