So people can get a general idea of how much money to bring,
How much did you spend on your trip too japan ? (Excluding flight and hotel price. Strickly spending money)

*lets try to get an average cost for 2 weeks in tokyo, also please describe the type of lifestyle you lived, like going clubbing any chance you got / drinking a ton or just enjoying the tourist areas and not having nights out*

Why the Hell would you go to Japan and spend the entire time in Tokyo?

Climb some mountains and visit the generic Higurashi village. You can go clubbing in wherever you are right now. The women won't get better and neither will the alcohol.

>Excluding flight and hotel price. Strickly spending money
Well do something like this:
>take number of days you'll be there
>figure out how many you'll be drinking and how many you'll be visiting the generic tourist areas
>ask some Japanjin how much a drink costs
>decide how much you want to drink in a foreign country where you have absolutely no allies
>figure out how much you'll be spending drinking B drinks at C en each for D days
>find out how much admission to these tourist areas are
>total that shit
>add in some extra because you might get stabbed or something
>add in a bit more because women are expensive
>add in a bit more to buy a hooker because we both know you aren't getting laid
>you can survive two weeks without food, but procure a drinking hole and defend it with your life
>alcohol on an empty stomach is dumb so learn how to fashion a bow and arrow to hunt the local wildlife
>travel coast to coast across Africa becoming a legend for the hundreds of tribes you will encounter, achieving apotheosis and ascending to the next mortal plane
>take the next mortal plane home

because Tokyo
>>
>>948921
Cities are so much better than the country side
You can look at trees back home. People are the best part of traveling. Talking to new people is great. Not to mention a city as huge as Tokyo has a ton of places to go and eat.

Also the women in Tokyo are amazing.
>>
>>948921
I am planning on going to Japan in the near future and I absolutely can't wait. I don't really like Japanese food at all though, actually I hate it. Are there western restaurants in cities besides Tokyo? I'm kind of a nature freak and I want to go on long hikes, but I'll probably just stay in the city if I can't find a mcdonalds or something like that. I know this sounds pathetic, but I plan on staying as far away from the foul smelling soups and whatever as possible. Are the fast food restaurants cheap there too? Or is that something that will bust my budget? I don't want to spend any more than 1500 yen a day on food. If I have to I might get some take out from Tokyo and go on day trips or something.
>>
Heading over to Otaru tomorrow to check out the town and hopefully have some great sushi. That said, does anyone have and recommendations for restaurants?

I'm also the same guy in the last thread traveling around from Australia with his gf. Was asking about nice smokes at one point too. Found a place that sells synthetic incense yesterday in sapporo if anyone is into that sort of high.
>>
Anyone know of a free place to study and use your laptop. I was going to cafes but that gets expensive if you go often enough. I joined a library but they don't have wifi and very few outlets.
>>
>>948889

>>

>>
>>948939
If you haven't been to Japan before, you haven't really had Japanese food. There's more to it than shitty california rolls and chicken-flavoured instant ramen.
>>
>>948976
All ramen is different. I want that exact ramen.
>>
>>948985
Standard pork miso ramen.
>>
>>948921
Tokyo is awesome. Nothing wrong with spending the most time in Tokyo. In saying that with how quick and easy it is to get around the country it makes no sense to spend all your time in Tokyo. Kyoto is awesome too.
>>
>>948939
>but I'll probably just stay in the city if I can't find a mcdonalds or something like that.
I went to McDonald's once on the first night because I was intimidated by ordering without speaking Japanese. It's no easier at McDonald's than it is at any other restaurant. Many have an English menu or at least pictures on the menu. Just point. No point going to a foreign country and eating the same shit you would at home the whole time.
>I know this sounds pathetic, but I plan on staying as far away from the foul smelling soups and whatever as possible.
Dude the food is awesome.
>Are the fast food restaurants cheap there too? Or is that something that will bust my budget?
Very reasonable. And the food tastes better than any fast food I've had from any Western country.
>I don't want to spend any more than 1500 yen a day on food.
That will be easy.
>If I have to I might get some take out from Tokyo and go on day trips or something.
Grab a bento box or two if you're going on day trips.
>>
>>948960
Your hotel? Fucking nowhere in Japan has free wifi.
>>
Anyone have experiences with prices at hostels/cheap hotels in Japan? Should I book in advance to get it cheaper or is the difference negligible? How much should I expect to pay for a night at a cheaper place?
>>
>>948960
I live in Japan, but I can never study efficiently in the same place that I sleep.
>>
>>948939
It is impossible to eat non-Japanese food and eat cheaply. Most people complain about the food prices in Japan because they try to eat like they do back home instead of like Japanese people.
>>
>>949067
I know a guy who went to Japan (friend of a cousin who lives in TX). After 4 days there, his first time out of the USA, he kept posting pics of McDonald's and saying things like "FINALLY, some real food!!" I don't think he liked the country or cuisine much.
>>
>>949074
The food is an acquired taste, everything tastes very different over there.

They also cannot fucking bake decent plain bread at all, always tastes weird.
>>
>>949077
What exactly is an acquired taste? Sure there are a few things like sushi (A food everyone has eaten), natto, and umeboshi, but pretty much everything else is nothing out of the ordinary except for being a unique combination of ingredients
>>
Sakura house. Would you recommend it? Any experiences? If not, any other share house? (planning to stay in Tokyo for one month)
>>
>>949087
japanese food is very plain, salty, and heavily preserved.

it simply lacks a lot of fats, vegetables, and variety in terms of spices.

I like it for its simplicity, in that they use the same ingredients (pretty much always rice) to create salty, sweet, sour, and savory tastes.

it's art in the sense of mastered simplicity. but for people who crave a lot of flavor or richness, it simply doesn't have much to offer.

also the above anon is right. their bread is fucking AWFUL. then again, whenever I go into a huge store, there's like, 5 loaves max. so it's obvious most people never even touch it.
>>
>>949077
>They also cannot fucking bake decent plain bread at all, always tastes weird.
White bread's like that in Asia generally. The bread's always far too sweet for some reason.

Best bread I've had in Asia was some absurd desert in Korea where it was inch thick, deep fried, super sweet, white bread and the worst was a fucking awful pizza in Tokyo that used disgustingly sickly and soft brioche for a base.
>>
>>949074
>After 4 days there, his first time out of the USA, he kept posting pics of McDonald's and saying things like "FINALLY, some real food!!" I don't think he liked the country or cuisine much.
Damn that's just sad. He didn't try MOS or Lotteria atleast?

I knew an English guy sort of like that. Wasn't keen on a lot of the local food but so just ended up trawling round a few curryhouses eating tonkatsu all week.

If you can't handle the food, stay the fuck away from traveling.

Japan is one of the easiest countries to travel in when it comes to food. If you have shit taste and can't eat anything but meat, Japan's got your back etc.

Grow a fucking spine or stay at home sucking on those big macs.
>>
>>949190
How abouts you fuck off?

I got plenty to eat, it was for the most part delicious but it does have a distinctive taste, also its a fucking meat eaters paradise, good luck getting the vegan option over there.

>also I don't eat McD's, even at home
>>
>>949190
That's uncalled for, I want to go hiking and I want to go hiking in Japan. It's not my fault they make bland, simplistic, overpriced dishes. If that's your thing then do your thing, but Imma do my thing.

>>949024
What is a bento box? Is it Japanese food? How much do they cost?
>>
>>949194
I never ever eat McDonalds back home, but I used to atleast once when traveling for an extended period because McDs and Coke are the most consistent foods in the world

I also never understood the hype about Mexican coke, I've never specifically had that kind but Coke in other countries taste the same to me as back in America.

Now Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Dr Pepper all taste drastically different.
>>
>>949263
You have a shitty palette and you do realize that Japanese food is going to be the cheapest food because you know you're in Japan. Is this baby's first trip out of the country?
>>
Moving to Japan in 5 weeks. Had lunch with a japanbro yesterday and he was telling me that they're hardcore on prosecuting people for torrenting. After some research I saw some suggestions of using seedbox and/or a VPN.

I didn't try Lotteria while I was there but did try MOS. Not sure the size of the burgers would satisfy your average burger scoffing Texan Joe.
>>
>>949146
I ate curry and cutlets like six or seven times when I was in Japan. I loved it. That and Ramen were my staples.
>>
>>949316
Mos is easily the best burger chain in all of Japan. The patties are a little small if you get the standard Mos but thats more than made for with that amazing Mos Sauce they top it with.
>>
>>949190
whoa dude, how about you chill. stop trying to prove how worldly and multicultural you are to a bunch of fat nerds on the internet.

I wasn't talking about good or bad. I was talking about LIKE or DON'T LIKE. and I was giving you a chef's perspective on japanese food.

there's a reason a lot of people don't like japanese food, or find it remarkable. it has a very narrow taste profile

jesus, kid
>>
>>949335
I believe there is no food that people in the world regularly eat that is actually bad, you just aren't used to the flavor and simply have to eat it enough to get used to it. My aunt teaches mostly kids from other countries. Most of them hate pizza when they first arrive, but after a year or two of eating it at parties they all love it.
>>
>>949339
again, that's NOT what I was saying

where do you people come from, with your inability to comprehend short sentences?

Japanese food has a very limited taste profile. Some people, irrespective of what they're exposed to, or what they are used to, just like MORE flavors and more variety.

particularly what is lacking in japanese food is fat and spice.

You know some people are genetically predisposed to prefer fatty food, right?

I'm done with this topic
>>
>>949339
oh, one last thing before I leave. some food really is just bad.

african food in particular. most of them overcook the meat to the point where it is tough and stringy, and just throw spices into a pot without letting juices simmer or marinate.

different cultures have strengths and weaknesses, but some food is just bad. and the idea that diversity means everyone hsould like everything is just stupid.
>>
>>949313
I've actually been to a few countries before and I really liked them. My method is always to ask for advice before I go. Unfortunately most of the posters here don't seem capable of giving basic tips.
>>
Wut. You can get good bread in Japan. Even in bfe tottori where I used to live all the bigger grocery stores had bakeries with gold stuff. Sure, the off the shelf stuff isn't great, but whatev, go to the bakery.

Cheap Italian is pretty easy to find, and usually pretty decent. Ive had some really good pizza in Tokyo.

Dunno what you mean by "Western" food though... There are "western" eateries but its still a Japanese thing...probably because there really isn't truly such a thing as western food.
>>
>>949263
You say Japan has bland, simplistic and overpriced food, yet you don't know what a bento is?

How about you stop shitting on something when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Japan is one of the most food-centric countries in the world. Everything has something to do with food there. They know their shit. Japanese food has more to it then rice and raw fish, if you'd bother to learn about it you'd realize there is nothing bland and simplistic about it. Don't judge the whole cuisine by one dish.
>>
>>949340
>genetically predisposed to prefer fatty food
HAES retard detected.
>>
Though i do enjoy various japanese dishes. I must admit that i, too, find most of their food rather bland: Lack of spices is a thing. I ended up cooking most of my own meals whej i was there. There are some godly dishes i ate when visiting locals for dinner; i regret not learning how to cook any of them.

Is this the best possibility within my budget (around 600-800€) for staying one month in Tokyo though? Also is there some sort of community life between the people who live there? I mean I guess that depends on the house but still. I remember a lot of people were talking about Sakura houses before we had Japan generals but I always just skimmed over the information posted since I didn't have any intention to stay in one and now I can't remember what the overall consensus was.

I'm that way too. Unfortunately you pretty much have to pay. I just go to Denny's and get the drip coffee. ¥215 or thereabouts for unlimited refills. If you stay there for a couple of hours, ¥100 an hour doesn't seem so bad for internet.
>>

I'm going to be moving into a sakura house soon. From what I gather it's just a regular backpacker/guest house place. they're reputable and won't rip you off.

I can highly reccommend Juyoh Hotel. I've been living here for the last 2 months. it's about ¥80,000 per month, clean, private rooms, free wifi and always someone to chat to downatairs.
>>
>>949527
With that budget, yes. You might get luck on airbnb but I wouldn't count on that. Check out Oakhouse too, some of their places are cheaper than Sakura houses. Dormitories can be a bit cheaper but I'd rather pay a little extra for my private 9 square meters.

Community stuff sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't. Depends on the location a lot too, sometimes you don't ever even see anyone else and sometimes there are parties all the time.

Have fun!

I'm going to stay in Tokyo for 3 weeks in summer. What kind of budget do I have to calculate for basic survival? I'll be staying at a dorm, so I gotta buy all my meals.
>>
>>949642
200k jpy (around 1500€)
You can survive quite comfortably with that. You can easily go over, but you can easily go under also.

If you eat cheap and don't buy any stuff, you can get by with 1500-2000 yen a day. That's around 500y for travel and the rest on food (konbini food/donburi-chainrestaurants). Don't torment yourself too much though, you're supposed to enjoy traveling and in Japan food is definitely a big part of it. Save up a little extra so you can afford to eat something else than onigiris ja beef donburis for three weeks.
>>
>>949723
1500€ would be way too much for me. I was thinking about 400-500€ roughly for food and transport. I will most likely be cooking myself too. Where would you suggest I exchange my money? I'm a bit reluctant to get all of my yen at home because the exchange rates from the banks are horrendous.

Been from Charlotte, with layovers in Chicago, San Fran or Denver.

At one time, it was cheaper to buy about a month out -- or at least, everyb0ody believed it was. This seems to no longer be the case. Prices do tend to go up shortly before the departure date, as the people buying at the last minute tend to be ore motivated to buy, and so willing to pay more.

Other than that, they tend to fluctuate slightly.

Trying to catch the absolute lowest fare is too likely to leave you dangling around until the fares start to go up -- best bet is to identify what fits your budget, and if flights are at or under that go ahead and grab a ticket.

I don;t use the Travelocity-type sites, if one of them has a low-fare guarantee or something, that might be right up your alley.
>>
>>949771
Atlanta and Chicago are the most common routes for people on the east coast.

It takes a long time and you book using the rule of 3s. 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days. Atleast thats what I hear, my uncle is a pilot so I only pay for gas
>>
>>949750
I suppose the dorm is paid then?
Anyway as I said, you can get by with just 1500 a day. But that would definitely be the absolute minimum. We're honestly looking at 400 yen each for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That's the lowest you can go even with the cheapest donburis or konbini food (an onigiri is about 80 yen). Cooking yourself won't be much cheaper, if at all. Travel is anywhere from around 100-400 yen per direction.

With 1500 yen per day we're looking at a bit under 250 euros. Depending on what you do, that will be 2-3 small meals a day and no any kind of sightseeing that requires entry fees. 500 euros is definitely doable, but you don't leave much room for deviations. Summer is quite a few months away so save up!
>>
>>949780
Yeah, the dorm is paid, we're just talking food and transportation. I think I'll stretch it to 70k yen, should be alright. I was in Scotland last year and we spent like 15-20€ a day, if at all. I can be frugal.

>>
>>949802
Yeah, sorry, I should've been more specific. What I actually wanted to know was, if drawing from ATMs is cheaper than exchanging money beforehand(and maybe if it's unproblematic).
>>
>>949804
As far as I know it depends on your bank. I withdrew 30 000 yen on three separate dates in December and it always showed up as 215 euros on my statement which is pretty much in line with the eur-jpy at that time (~140y to 1 eur). No extra fees or anything.

I know that some banks do charge for international transactions and I'm not sure if the rate used is also determined by your bank or what. So I guess you'll need to find someone who has experience and the same bank as you.
>>
>>949808
I think I'll best go and ask my bank about that. Thanks anyway!

>>
>>949819
I know this. But this dude seems like he wants to be super cheap.
>>
>>949820
Is 70k for 3 weeks super cheap though? Like, at home I could very easily get by for a month with that kind of money. It's not like I wanna go for a fancy dinner every day.
>>
>>949846
See this >>949780
250 (around 32000k) would be _super_ cheap. Travel alone can eat up around 10k in the 21 days the other guy plans to spend. 70k is far more reasonable but if there's any unplanned costs you're easily fucked.

Having a bit more to spend generally makes traveling/vacationing more enjoyable since for those few precious days or weeks you spend away from home you don't actually have to worry about money since you were a smart guy and saved up.

But as always, we're all unique snowflakes so what works for me isn't what works for everyone. I consider myself a pretty cheap traveler but even I think 70k is a bit low for three weeks.

Just for food and travel? I thought that was like total spend including souvenirs and stuff.

Well train travel will run you at MOST ¥1200 a day. That's taking the trains to Odaiba which are really expensive for some reason. Otherwise if you're spending a full day somewhere within Tokyo you'll be paying between ¥340 ~ ¥700 return.

There's a simple rule for food in Tokyo: Posh lunch, cheap dinner. Most nice restaurants have excellent deals during the lunch period where you can get a set meal for about ¥1000. Those same places will then charge 3x the price for dinner. Of course there's plenty of other restaurants and chains that can do super cheap food all the time. Hidakaya is a great place to get a filling ramen and gyoza for ¥500.

>>949846

There's seems to be quite a lot of budget questions in here lately.

I pretty much saved all my receipts on my last trip so if people are genuinely interested I could decipher some of the squigglies and post some real prices in here. Unless there are lurkers who are in Japan right this very moment and could provide more up to date info (or maybe even do requests?)?

>>
>>949869
I'm here long term so my spending habbits are going to differ from someone here on vacation. Although when I first arrived I could easily spend ¥2,000 a day on food and probably another ¥2,000 on alcohol.

Now on an average day of eating at home my food budget would be around ¥400.

"A whole variety of day passes is available for the Tokyo area, however, most of them are overpriced and/or not very practical because they do not cover all of Tokyo's train and subway lines. Consequently, single tickets or prepaid cards usually come cheaper, especially if you plan your city sightseeing in a geographically wise way."

For example Tokyo Free Kippu 1590 yen, unlimited travel for one day. Not worth it. Going anywhere on the Yamanote line costs 190 tops for example (of course not everything is along yamanote). You'd have to make at least 8 trips of over 20 minutes during the day to come even close. Just get a suica and plan ahead so your destinations for the day are within walking distance.

I gotta get to my school every day, so I will be using one line constantly. The Suica sounds really good though, I think I'll get that.

hyperdia is your friend then

I'm thinking about visiting Korea for a week before the summer exchange thingy I'm going to Japan begins. What is the best way to get from Seoul to Tokyo/Osaka? Flight seems ridiculusly expensive or am I just looking at the wrong places?

Peach has pretty cheap flights from Seoul to Osaka.

Looking into living and working in Japan--actually have a Skype interview next week. While most of the company's locations are in Kanto, and subsequently the Tokyo region, it seems to be flexible of where you want to live and work.

I've been taking a look at apartments, and besides the more obvious features and commodities--no guarantors, utilities, etc. I really don't have much to go off of, my only really preferences is that it would be nice to live near Adachi-ku (have family that lives there) and that it's under $900 or 90,000 Yen (I know it's not the equivilent, but it's what I've been going off of for what I've been looking so far).

Any tips or recommendations of where I could live and what rental companies I should look into/recommended?

With Suica you can add a commuter pass for single destination journeys over a month which will save you even more again

im going to japan soon. How do i find a wife? or at least Megasluts into white dudes

Go to a gaijin club, all the women in them are after gaijin cock.

Checked that out. That's really good. How does the card know which fare to deduct for specific destinations though? On Youtube, people just swipe their card at the gates and they're done.

Look under Suica Commuter Pass for instructions with pictures.
>>
>>950062
Yeah, I already looked up how to set up a commuter pass on the card. I meant when I decide to take a line that's different from my daily commute. Are the gates specific to the lines and it just deducts just the amount for one way on that line, or how does that work?
>>
>>950065
I'm assuming there's 2 balances on the card. Your pre-paid commuter pass and just a regular cash balance for travelling wherever else.
>>
>>950065
Ah yea, you swipe it once when you go in and swipe it again when you go out. When you go out it checks where you swiped in then calculates and deducts the fare automatically.

Ah yes, that makes sense. Thanks.

My flight comes in at 10:45pm at Haneda. Can I still catch a bus or a monorail to central Tokyo or am I fucked? According to the timetables, the last monorail departs at around 12pm. Seems like a close call.

The hotel bath tubs are freakin' too small even in decent middle sized hotels. If you really wanna stretch you legs or stay at those cheap hostels, y'might want to try out these public bath places. It ain't so bad as it looks on the outside.

Thankfully the prices are same everywhere (unless it's one of those SUPER BATH PLACES)
>>
>>950086
Haneda isn't that big. If your plane isn't delayed too much, you should have no trouble making it.
>>
>>950116
I find Japanese baths better than western ones, I don't mind that they are usually square as they are so wonderfully deep.

Any bath I use here in the UK tends to be just wide enough to be uncomfortable and I still can't stretch my legs out (I'm barely 6 feet so its not like freakishly tall)
>>
>>950086
Say you'll get out of the airport at 11:15PM. it's like 20-30 minutes to tokyo. If you let your hotel know ahead of time you'll be checking in late you'll be fine, otherwise you might be better of having a nap at a manga cafe until morning.

Never mind. Took a different flight, arriving at Narita at an earlier time now.
>>
>>950153
When you go to the subway at narita you'll see a bunch of chumps aiting in line for the N'ex. Go straight to the empty skyliner counter. avoid the queues, get straight to the city. yee-haw!
>>
>>950166
Isn't the skyliner more expensive though? I was planning on taking the Keisei and then the JR
>>
>>950169
It's more expensive than the evening liner. I should have just said take the keisei.
>>
>>950184
>>950166
I don't have to deal with the counters though if I just go ahead and get a suica right away, right?

How long have you stayed in Japan and enjoyed the experience?

Flight prices are cheap right now, I'm thinking about going in Mai or June.

I am not sure for how long though and I am also unsure about the cost of anything else.
Are Hostels/Hotels expensive? How about travelling from for example Tokio to Kyoto?

I realize these are noob questions and I'm not familiar with the board culture here on /trv/ so sorry in advance.

If a link answering this question is in the sticky I apologize again and I would be glad if someone could point me to the specific link, their large number was a bit overwhelming to me.

I stayed for three weeks, seemed about the right time for the standard route (Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto-Hiroshima) with a few extra stops like Hakone or Kamakura in between (and Okinawa instead of Hiroshima).

Hotels and Hostels gonna be the same as in most parts of Western Europe and the US, maybe a bit more expensive or even cheaper depending on the way the currencies will move.

check hyperdia for information on train fare and consider getting a rail pass for a week or two

Going in a couple of weeks to Osaka and Kyoto. I have around 8~ days before I take a plane to Seoul.

Is there anything I shouldn't miss in either city or the surrounding area? I don't have much planned, so I'm up for anything.

I'm mainly looking to explore food, shopping and history, and I'll be with my mom (who has the same interests) if that helps at all.
>>

I'm not 100% sure as the last time i took the nex was 3 years ago, but i'm pretty sure you still need a specific ticket for the nex.
