I'm going to be in Kyoto on the 19th and 20th. I was planning to check out the Fushimi Inari Shrine, the Golden Pavilion, and maybe Katsura Rikyu. However, there's supposed to be thunderstorms on those days.I feel like this completely fucks up my plans. What would be better to do in Kyoto with this weather? If it matters, I'm 22, male, and traveling alone.

Going to Tokyo on a limited budget for two weeks next summer. I'm there as a dumb nerd, culture and food lover and below are all of the attractions I'd like to check out. Gotta pick some off the list, as I'm not gonna be able to save up as much as I had hoped for. Recommendations appreciated. Some of these attractions are free, but they're either super out of the way or I just can't figure out myself if they're worth it (judging from photos/videos).

Some I've got noted down because they're famous for cultural stories or ghost stories, some for their beauty, some for the fact that they're not very well-known so you don't get tourists everywhere. How's a good way to narrow this shit down?

Do you think I'd have more fun in SEA than in Japan? I guess Japan would be interesting to see just for its wiredness and the novelty factor of visiting a place that's so different from where I'm from.

Ghibli Museum is a must IMO. The only Ghibli film I saw before going was Sprited Away so I'm not really a huge fan. If you have even the faintest interest in SG, you'll love it. Only thing is, you have to purchase your tickets outside the country and have no chance of buying them in Japan (if my memory serves me correctly).

I never went to the National Museum of Nature and Science but it sonds like something I'd love, however, I went to the National Museum and it's probably the most comprehensive and impressive museum I've ever been too. Going to the St. Petersburg Hermitage next month though so it might take the number 1 spot.

Hotels can be found for a little as $50-$60/night/person, nice ones too.
Good inexpensive food is also easy to find.
The JR Rail pass is an outstanding value if you plan to use the bullet train a lot to see lots of places.

$4000 should be plenty. My 3 week trip cost about that much or less in 2008, but the currency exchange then was in my favor.

There's a lot to see in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara on the side, and more further south, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Himeji...

Within Fukuoka; Ohori Koen and surroundings (Fukuoka Castle ruins), Nakasu and Nakasu Kawabata, leading to Canal City. The ramen stadium there is indeed lame. If you want ramen, head to Ichiran Ramen in Tenjin.

Then around Fukuoka you should go to Sasaguri, and Dazaifu really is nice.
If you have enough time left, you may want to move to Aso-san, a volcano and fuckhuge caldeira in the middle of Kyushu. Kumamoto castle is in pretty good shape if you're around, cool to see.
Nagasaki is fairly uninteresting, it's has a strong chinese and western influence. Well, you could go to the chinatown if you really want, after the bomb museum.

Does anyone have any experience snowboarding/skiing in Hokkaido?
I'll be in Tokyo from October through late January and would love to visit either Niseko (Annupuri specifically) or Rusutsu for a few days while I'm there. If anyone knows better places for trees or powder that would be great to know. I live in colorado and have been snowboarding for about 7 years so experience isn't an issue.
On a related note, are there places I can go to rent equipment? The resorts only have park board available for rent and I plan on spending 99% of my time in the trees/powder.

I went to last year's Daimonji (more common name for Gozan no Okuribi.)

Honestly, the crowds were MASSIVE and getting a good view can be difficult since not many places have sight of more than one of the characters. People were pushing like mad and I had to save a little girl from getting crushed. I had a nice time in the end because I wandered into a dance party right off the street and then met this guy who bought me shit in exchange for chatting in English awhile (quite common occurrence in Japan... personally I don't mind it once in awhile)

What I enjoyed a lot more was the Nara To-kae, which is a lantern festival that runs every night from the 5th through the 14th. It has that amazing Japanese festival atmosphere that Daimonji kind of lacks due to its overcrowdedness. Basically they light tens of thousands of candles and you walk around the city at dusk eating shaved ice and shit. Will post a pic of that next.

Whereabouts will you be and do you want to stay in that area? You could just jump on a local train at the start of the day and jump off wherever looks nice, walk around a bit, get something to drink and eat, then jump back on the train and repeat. Once the sun has set (around 7:30pm) start heading back (start heading back a bit earlier if you're pretty far out).

You can find lots of scenery jumping off at smaller stations and just walking around the town. See a hill not too far off in the distance? Jump off at the next station and see if you can climb it. Train go over a nice looking river? Get to the next station and walk back to it.

Did this for 4 days when I got the 5-day Kintetsu Rail Pass, it paid itself off just going from Nagoya to Kyoto on the first day, then for the other 4 days I had the pass, just sat on the trains and snooped around the countryside.

I've climbed in Spring. Only 4 people were on the mountain that day. Off season is the way to go. Unfortunately, it might be difficult to hike at night and do the traditional watch the sunrise from the summit.

If you are experienced, you should be fine. Bring crampons and expect to make you own path as the the normal path may be snowed over.

I've used interpals for this.
