Where should I go that's close (flight wise) to Manila?
Hong Kong, Singapore...? I want somewhere to stay a week en route to Philippines.
Bonus for cheap western quality airbnbs, safe, relaxed atmosphere. Just somewhere to chill in comfort for a week

Singapore is very safe, loads of good cheap food and a really nice place if you're staying for a short period.
Not sure how the airbnb prices are.

Hong Kong is better than Singapore in nearly every way. But if you really insist on "cheap western quality airbnbs", you might as well just go right to the Philippines.

It's the most amazing city I've been to. Best skyline in the world, half the city is protected parks with beautiful nature, great infrastructure so you can get anywhere within an hour, outlying islands to explore, little alleys in kowloon going to little shops or up a tiny staircase and find yourself in a mall. Everything is just so interesting in HK, there is so much going on everywhere and so much to see, east meets west.
singaporean here, fuck singapore.

Depends how close you need to be. I find that Taiwan hits pretty much all of those even if it's a bit further away than some places, but it's still only a couple of hours which is pretty much nothing. It's clean and as safe as Hong Kong, as well as being a lot cheaper, plus there's quite a few nice day trips from Taipei. The biggest drawback is that there will be more of a language barrier, but especially in Taipei you can get by pretty easily.

Any interesting stories? Recommended things to see?
Kind of want to go for the cyberpunk atmosphere, glowing neon etc. Is it really like that?

It is, not as much as it used to be but exploring Kowloon at night is amazing
