I'm going to Cracow with a friend in Oktober. We've got two and a half days, and haven't thought of anywhere to go or anything to do besides Auschwitz. Any advice?

just do the pub crawl, I did it and it was alright
underground jazz clubs near that big tower someone plays the trumpet off of every hour.

I stayed in hotel wentzel (I think that's spelled right) on the city square and it was a great location. I was there for 3 days and my wife and I visited auschwitz, salt mine, and visited random old buildings. It was a really nice city, especially staying in the city center it made it easy to walk everywhere/get to public transport easy.
Also there is a Georgian retsturant on the square near the church that has really good food.
Wieliczka Salt Mine is a must, google it

>Goes to poland to see Auschwitz
Seriously, why do people do this?
>>1298202
because people like history? I went to Cambodia to see Angkor because of history, same goes for auschwitz.
>except angkor is real
>>1298209
Yeah but
>going to Auschwitz
why would someone want to go to a dumb place where nothing ever happened?
>>1298209
I don't understand people who travel to go to depressing places. Besides, there's literally thousands of other historical sites in Poland.

>Auschwitz
>History
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

For memes, mainly. And to take pictures of obnoxious Israeli high school kids.

Been to Krakow last year and had a great time. My advice from someone who loves historical sites is to skip Auschwitz because there isn't much to see, couple of buildings that don't look like you could gas or burn anything in and few rooms filled with old shoes and hair combs from prisoners. Check the Salt mine as >>1297824
suggested, and some local pubs. Felt like a smaller Prague, very comfy at that time of the year to just chill in a cafe while playing card games with friends on a rainy day.

Hard to tell if that's possible. Humanity's history is long and bloody.

Alright, thanks to everyone who made a good suggestion or shared their experiences. If anyone else has more to share I'd be obliged.

I stayed in Krakow with a local friend. I don't have much to add, but I would advise:
Stay in the old jewish district Kazimierz, it's the hip neighbourghood and it's packed with cool restaurants, shops and bars. Very popular with locals. If you don't stay there, make sure to plan a visit at least. Stroll around and get beer or food.
Castle and cathedral are obviously musts. The museum underneath the cathedral square is also really cool even though not so visited.
The salt mines were not as impressive as I was told but I'm still glad I went.
Czarna Kaczk or the Black Duck was a great restaurant for Polish cuisine, I would definitely recommend having a meal there.
How long should the time between bumps be on this board, anyway? I'd hate to be an annoyance.

Why are you even waiting for new responses? You're asking for basic tourist advice for a very popular city. You could read the whole, free, In Your Pocket Krakow guide or the free bits of the Lonely Planet guide, see the top rated cheap restaurants and bars on Trip Advisor.
I curently live in Krakow (4'th year so in a sense I can call myself a local). Totally agree with they guy who advised You to stick mostly to Kazimierz district. Main Square if nice for one afternoon (see the museum under the Cloth Hall), eventually eat dinner in Ukrainian restaurant on Grodzka st. (exelent food and really cheep). In Kazimierz there is tons of good restaurants and pubs with amazing local beer (stay away form big brands like Zywiec, Warka etc). I highly recomend Zazie Bistro on Jozefa st. (for food) and Tea Time on Dietla street - close to the river and the castle (for beer). If you are on a budget you can also try polish pierogi (never had bad pierogi anywhere so far) or fantastic Pho soup bar on Meiselsa st. Krakow have a lot of grat spots. You can spend weeks and weeks discovering it. If you really are into the WWII tragedy turism, there is a very beautiful park in Plaszow (this is where the German camp from the Schindler's List used to be). You need a good weather for that though. Schindler's Factory museum in Zablocie is also interesting. The modern art museum next to it wasn't worth it though. Last thing. There are free walking tours in Krakow if you really don't know what to do with yourself. Good luck.

I'm not asleep yet :) You may ask if you have any questions.
If the weather allows. Rent a city bike and ride along the Vistula River. Than take a boat bus to Tyniec abby (you can go there by bus but it is less fun than boat or bike). It;s a true historical treasure and.. yes they brew monastery beer. Also it is just beautifull there in autumn.
