Any stories of just spontaneously traveling abroad? Maybe you just needed to get away or there was a sudden shift in plans, etc
How did you deal with it? How did it work out?

I had just got fired from my job and decided to stop putting off travel and go to Alaska. It worked out pretty well, I met cool people and saw beautiful things. Beforehand I had this image in my mind that if I traveled I would just get to the hostel and wouldn't know what to do, have an anxiety attack, freeze up and just stay in the hostel. But I was able to push myself through it.

Still, I wish I had planned how to deal with my anxiety/stomach problems beforehand as they made things a bit annoying. Bottom line is know yourself and your limits.

>browsing /trv/
>see thread about dude who drove from France to Afghanistan and back
>dude asks if anyone is retarded enough to join him for motorcycle trip through West Africa in 3 months
>said he'd found his idiot
>end up spending >3 months in Africa instead of 6 weeks like intended

Wasn't bad.

My summer holidays hadn't been approved until very late, so plane tickets were outrageously expensive.I used google flights map to check for cheapo tickets from the closest airport.
Ended up going to Uzbekistan, tickets were unbelievably cheap.

It was worth every penny, had some great expeditions in the desert, some rowdy nights in post-sovietic clubs, some Uzbek cutie flirting in hostels, etc.

Sup anon!

What would you recommend doing Uzbekistan? I've been interested in Central Asia for quite a while.

Many many things, it's on the Silk Road and the culture is a big mixture of Arabs, Persians, Mongols, etc. it's quite fascinating. It's only one of the few multi-racial country whose ethnicites span over multiple races. It's quite unique.

Older cities like Samarcande, Bukhara and Khiva are mind blowing. I let you check the pictures on the Internet.
Khiva especially has a downtown completely built of solidified sand. Going outthere at sun rise brings you a millenium back in the past, it's truly is a magic atmosphere. At sunset, people would throw buckets of water in the street to cool them down, so you'd see clouds of steam rising all over the district, while you're perched on the 10 meters-tall fortified walls.
I was lucky enough to go there while there were few tourists (too hot for most). It's not overridden, but there are quite a few tours, so some places feel a bit fake. Parts of Bukhara especially.

You can find Turkish baths everywhere, they are quite an experience.

Food is meh, too much mutton (boiled, fried, baked...) and shashlik.

Nightlife in Tashkent is weird as fuck. It can be quite rowdy (pole dancing in clubs and all that), girls will flirt with you heavily but won't get too close. Men just hammer down vodkas.

Ethnic Uzbeks are generally cool. Russians are racist pieces of shit.

Uzbekistan is great for its Silk Road cities, but nature is uninteresting, except maybe the desert. If you have time, you should check Kirghizstan just next door where it's the exact opposite : meh cities, fantastic outdoors (mountains mostly).I met many people who had trekked in Kirghizstan, to finish by some more regular sightseeing in Uzbekistan.

Can confirm, been to Uzbek,Kyrgyz, Tajik and Kazakhstan a year ago and they're all a blast! if you're going to Uzbekistan in Tashkent i recommend topchan hostel, the owner is very chill and just across the street there's a tiny liquor store that if you go into the backroom has a BBQ grill and 2 seats, you can get awesome shashlik there for like 0.5 to 0.8 dollar a skewer and it's big!
