Hi guys. I recently came across a good amount of money and now I want to move. I have a kind of contract that lets me live anywhere in the world and stil work. So I was thiniking about Hong Kong.
Is it very expensive? What wage do I need to live stabil life (middle to upper-middle class life) in HK. Do they have draconic laws in any area? I come from central europe.
I know this is very general but please contribute anything
>>1294633
Middle class live 3 generations crammed into 2 rooms apartments in Quarry Bay or Hung Hom.
If you want to live anywhere remotely convenient, expect to pay more than 1000EUR in rent for a shitty studio.
I have lived in serviced apartments from 2004 till 2008. Rent for a 1 bedroom in TST was 3600 EUR. Prices have doubled since then.
If you have rent sorted out, life can be pretty cheap tho. Way cheaper than any western megalopolis of similar relevance.
>>1294633
>Thinking about moving to HK
Literally why?
>>1294641
> Literally
As opposed to...?
Also HK can be fun to live in, it's diverse and vibrant and as I said above life can be pretty cheap.
So literally why not?
>>1294641
I want to try living in a huge city. Was thinking about Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, New York.
>>1294644
>As opposed to...?
As opposed to any other city even in Asia
>can be fun to live in
Why? Because some 5/10 chinks will sleep with you bc of your BWC?
>it's diverse and vibrant
Any city is now "diverse" (with all that entails) and can be defined as "vibrant". Meaningless terms off your basic bitch tripadvisor or huffpo
>life can be pretty cheap
You said 1000EUR for a shitty apartment studio and 3600 for 1b in TST
>cheap
I get it you had some fun times there, got laid, made some friends but be objective pls
If you want the fag weeb experience to brag about "living it up in Asia" as some sort of cosmopolitan genius then go to Tokyo or Osaka or even some mainland Chink cities pls
>>1294648
Wow you are not only reading impaired, you also are an asshole.
Ok I'll bite:
What do you oppose to "literally why"? "Metaphorically why?"
I said "if rent is sorted out" life can be pretty cheap.
The rest of your post doesn't make much sense so I won't bother.
>>1294662
Don't worry, anon. That poster is filled with hate. If you like HK, then go for it. Only you can decide if living there is right for you. It sounds like a cool place.
>>1294633
>Is it very expensive?
Visit numbeo. The mods should add it to the sticky.
>>1294662
>I said "if rent is sorted out" life can be pretty cheap.
Yea no shit moron if you somehow magically get accomodation for free instead OF YOUR OWN CITED 2000Euros (u said prices doubled) for a shitty studio then yep IT CAN be cheap
Just like Beverly Hills CAN BE cheap.
How stupid are you?
>>1294666
>That poster is filled with hate
Yea what's with /trv/ cucks and being idiotic naive pussies? Muh hate muh angery peace&love bro
kys
>>1294675
>what's with /trv/ cucks and being idiotic naive pussies
This is how your average thread goes on this cuckfest of a board:
>post romanticized idea about a location
>fans will flock to praise it
>someone is critical eventually
>he gets massively shit on by said fans (usually pampered, autistic morons)
>thread dies
>>1294675
He thinks 1000EUR is expensive
>>1294678
>post romanticized idea about a location
>people who want to help, help
>autisto supremo comes, calls names and shit everywhere
>people try to reply without useless agressiveness, to no avail
>thread dies
Housing is small (there are literally advertisements in hong kong stores advertising products who's only selling point are that they can fold to be really small, simple things too, like chairs, lamps and toolboxes).
Literally a few meters are valuable there. Apart from that, I think everyday life is pretty cheap (in the day I was there, I went to a club, a real restaurant, and a fast-food place, and prices were more or less the same as in france where I live), and keep in mind that if you need things like tech, electronics, furniture, clothing etc, and don't care about branding, shenzhen is just nearby and they are all dirt-cheap there(I bought a no-name gtx 780 there for about 3000 yuan 2 years ago, and although it's probably fake, and has problems with some drivers, it still works fine). I would imagine you do need some paperwork to be able to take things back and forth though, so that might add cost.
I'd say if you know you are spending enough years there to make buying all your stuff in China a substantial save of money, you can go for a slightly larger apartment (considered "upper middle class") with maybe 4500 € /month, and most of it will go towards your rent. In SE Asia, such upper-class apartments are usually part of larger complexes where there are facilities like a gym, restaurant or pool where tenants can go for free or with a reduced price.
>>1294684
It's 2000 you larper, and for what I assume is a 25mq shitty studio apt.
So yea it's expensive which I didn't even bring up, your autistic weabo ass said it was "cheap".
You could rent a nice place in central Tokyo (or most metropolis really) for that amount (1k not 2k as stated) not in shitty HK
>>1294685
You guys got triggered by a single word "literally" because you felt threatened by any hint of criticism and honest talk AS USUAL
>>1294689
>4500 € /month
Right this is why this board is worse than USELESS.
Rich pampered autists spouting nonsense nonchalantly.
4500$/m rents you a fucking villa IN THE WEST
>>1294696
You've been here for 2 days, stop acting like you have any idea how this board works and fuck off already.
also you are the one who said 2000, I merely said prices had doubled where I rented, but I know you have troubles with comprehension so we'll let it pass.
>>1294702
>You've been here for 2 days,
Lmao how many posters are here? Is it you ERPing as the 10 different guys talking to yourself?
>stop acting like you have any idea how this board works
You mean safespace larping with no regards to reality or common sense?
>and fuck off already.
Maybe I will, it's honestly embarassing and again 99% of the tourist sites&socials are better
Or maybe I'll stick around and piss your autism off
>also you are the one who said 2000
You said 1000 AND DOUBLED
>>I merely said prices had doubled where I rented
Right soo you meant your specific apartment that for some reason you're checking out 10 years later HAS DOUBLED (meaning a 1bedroom in TST is now 7200EUR (lol)
and by your own words:
>expect to pay MORE THAN 1000EUR in rent for a shitty studio
YET somehow you're here shilling like there's no tomorrow
>but I know you have troubles with comprehension so we'll let it pass.
No, you just write like shit, you can tell you're not a native speaker
>>1294700
>I'm poor : the post
>>1294711
>I'm poor : the post
Right, as I said board is entirely comprised of rich yet autistic pampered normies, thanks for supporting my argument
>>1294713
You being poor doesn't mean others are rich
>>1294708
>Right soo you meant your specific apartment that for some reason you're checking out 10 years later
Yes, because it was quite exciting to live there and I have spent 4 years there so it makes sense to keep an eye on it.
>HAS DOUBLED (meaning a 1bedroom in TST is now 7200EUR (lol)
pic related (lol)
>>1294714
>You being poor doesn't mean others are rich
Again with the childish elitism.
I'm sorry but if you're treating 4500EUR/m for a small apt as peanuts you're either rich, a complete moron with no sense whatsoever or a keyboard larper.
>>1294716
>it makes sense to keep an eye on it.
I know what you mean
>pic related (lol)
Is that supposed to be impressive? I mean it's nice but you can get the same, hell even an actual apt with kitchenette etc for 800 in Thailand, 1200 in Shibuya.
I don't get why the MASSIVE overexpense for accomodation for again, a relatively shitty place like HK, makes me a baddie.
As mentioned, why even post asking for opinions if any and all criticism is met with hostility?
Prices you can look up with a quick google search and apparently they don't even matter by the average trv posters' mentality
>>1294633
I live in HK now. Rent is expensive, apartments are small. Learn to live on Microwave cooking. Boozing out is expensive unless you drink at club 7-11 (see pic) and eating out at western restaurants can also get expensive although McDs and KFC are are pretty cheap. Local girls are mostly of the princess type. The ones that aren't wont talk to you anyway. The ones that might show an interest care more about your property portfolio than you.
The countryside is great. Believe it or not 40% of Hong Kong is protected country park and there are loads of good hiking trails. The city is safe and public transport is efficient. Internet is good, no noticeable censorship and laws are still mostly British.
>>1294633
>moving to hk
kek
>>1294689
>Literally a few meters are valuable there. Apart from that, I think everyday life is pretty cheap.
It's true for daily life being "cheap" but a normal citizen need to carry at least 20 years loan for housing which is not sth too funny, Hong Kong is the most unaffordable the place on earth for housing, even a parking slot worth thousands
>>1294700
Yes, this is why I'm always encourage my dad to sold our apartment after his retirement, our shitty small apartment (about 600ft^2 saleable area) currently worth about 6million HKD which is about 770000 USD, and the price is still raising, everywhere on earth will be considered dirt cheap under my fuckup lens, so good luck for you to find a house
>>1295010
>Learn to live on Microwave cooking
I feel sorry for you bro
>The countryside is great.
but seems like you're enjoying yourself
Hongkonger here, born and raised, 22yo, the current political environment and the insane real estate market makes really me worried about my future, unironically I'm planning to move too, so maybe you can take our flat after we leave, kek
>>1295024
>maybe you can take our flat after we leave
Yeah, rent-free? When my contract expires I will probably move to Bangkok and become a starving travel blogger
Why is /trv/ filled with such vitriol and hate for absolutely nothing? You're arguing house prices in Hong Kong.
OP, is it just remote work? You're limited by where you can legally move, is hk even possible?
>>1295098
Nah just /trv/ being "FUCK BIG CITY" again and Hongkong seems declining, i guess?
This thread has 3 kinds of people, people trying to be helpful, people commenting just to tell that one guy to fuck off, and that one guy who I would bet has strayed from the Japan general trying to call others weebs and sperging out about someone wanting to live in Hong Kong.
>>1295126
This thread has only two types of posters
Idiots that think hk is affordable OR LEGAL for a "digital nomad" and thr realists getting shit on for telling the idiots how little they know
Choose a side. There is no sperging.
>>1294700
>4500$/m rents you a fucking villa IN THE WEST
He's not talking about the rent, he's talking about the salary you could live with.
See.
>with maybe 4500 € /month, and most of it will go towards your rent
If "most" go toward your rent, then there is something else. It's not worded properly, but you still look like a tard to have missed the point.
For OP.
>rent
Obviously, it's expensive, I think it's been covered thoroughly. However, if you're OK with that, you can go live in more remote parts of HK instead of Central, TST, Wanchai and the likes. Rents will just be "expensive" instead of "highway robbery".
No district, but basically the further you go from downtown. There were some relatively affordable appartments on the surrouding island (Lantau, etc.) but it takes you some time to get to the city itself. Also, you'll be in the very chinese parts of the city, which aren't exactly to the taste of many.
>visa
It's easy as a western to get a short term via - it's mostly on arrival - but at some point, you need to get a proper residency permit. If you open a company locally, which is fairly simple and cheap (I remember something 300USD to open a company, maybe less), it will take you some time but it's perfectly doable.
>working permits
You can work without, but if you go through creating a company to get your residency permits, you'll probably have to get one. HK is not a lawless area. Unsure about the details though.
It's a very entrepreneurial city, so I don't think it's hard. Taxes are also VERY low.
If you don't create the company, I'm not sure they'll let you stay forever. You can't stay in a visa limbo for extended periods of time.
Anyway, HK is great. Culture is amazing, so is the food. It really is an electric city, similar to NYC "the city that never sleeps". But the super high costs of accomodation and crowded living might turn you off after a while.
Stick there for some time, and once you're accustomed to Chinese, move to cheaper Taiwan.
I'm also moving to HK in a few days. My company booked me a serviced apartment in Mong Kok, any insight about that district?
How is Hong Kong to visit?
>>1296684
It's the busiest district.
LOTS of locals go there to shop after works so it's crowded and sometimes hard to find a taxi, but the subway is very convenient.
Upside, thousands of food options. Holes-in-the-wall, sit in, chains...
>>1297521
To me it's one of the best cities in the world if you can afford the "fun" things. If you are willing to spend as much as you would in Paris or London, you are going to have a great time, depending on what you're into. If you want a cheap bacpacker's experience, your money would last a lot longer in China, Thailand and the likes.
>>1294633
>Do they have draconic laws in any area?
The word is "draconian" you fucking moron
>>1297521
compact and energetic, you can have a good trip there for 4 days 9 (a godsend cause it's expensive as tits)
fuck disneyland and ocean world, those are for mainland fucks bringing in family
go to victoria peak, walk around the night markets, take a hike in the parks etc
also always give alms to those monks walking around for good karma
