*Info on prostitution*
Please try to refrain from asking questions about prostitution.
Japan's sex industry is almost completely inaccessible to foreigners who do not speak Japanese.
What is available can generally be found in the following links
>http://rockitreports.com/category/sex-in-tokyo/
>http://erolin.net/

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Please refer to the old thread while it's still up: >>1288526

I already asked this on the other thread but no one aswered.
Is a one day Kyoto trip worth it? I'm staying in Tokyo for two weeks and already booked my stay there, I wasn't really planning to stay a night or more in Kyoto so I wanted to know if it was worth visiting and then returning on the same day. Or will I be rushing too much and not actually seeing anything? even if I take an early train and go back by afternoon.
>>
>>1292343
I'd say no, the cost of a train alone makes the trip not worth it. Then after that you could probably hit one of two districts but they're probably not worth the hassle either. I enjoy Kyoto as kind of a peaceful large city but it's a bit lacking in wow factor.

It is a good idea to exchange dollars at Narita airport? Is there any kind of "limit" on how much money I can exchange?

Citibank card or any card with no transaction fees. 7/11 ATMs take international cards for a fee of 220 yen. Your withdrawal limit will be set by your account.
>>
>>1292373
I wouldn't recommend exchanging cash anywhere abroad unless it's a dire emergency. Just order some cash through in your own country prior to departing.

Or, just withdraw cash when you arrive (I always do this). There are a few ATMs in both international terminals at Narita where you can withdraw cash with a foreign card.
>>

If you're wanting to visit some traditional temples and stuff around Tokyo, here is a list of some decent day trips: http://zoomingjapan.com/travel/day-trips-from-tokyo/

Try Airbnb or a hostel, I stayed at Len Kyoto and it was awesome. The bar is great.

>>1292388
I quite liked Kamakura and Nikko :)
>>
>>1292388
Seconding Nikko. Can be crowded, and Rinnoji temple is under heavy restoration, but Toshogu and Taiyuin are both jaw-dropping works of craftsmanship.

How's the Ice Arena? I wouldn't mind catching an Ice Bucks game if there happens to be one when I'm there.
>>
>>1292400
Don't know. I was there for 2 nights, and spent all my time at the shrine grounds for the Yayoi festival and up at Lake Chuzenji.
>>
>>1292387
The issue with that is I'm traveling in a group of 6 people, who said "no airbnb", and "no hostels"

hostels and airbnb look decently priced but these fuckers are "hotel only" and "everyone must have their own room" and "must be close to a train station"

I'm traveling alone next time.
>>
>>1292426
Hotel only wouldn't even be that bad if they would buddy up 2/room, but this is just being retarded.

You don't exchange currency at an airport unless you book it in advance.

Not the anon you're replying to, but you can make exchange orders in advance and pick the cash up from the airport. The fee and exchange rate are a lot better than just exchanging on the spot.

Tip for getting laid or dating in Japan in general: Most girls will fawn over you for doing things that are considered normal courtesy in the west (opening doors for them, taking the bill on the first date(s), making sure they're walking on the right side of the door etc.).

Why do people say that Tokyo is expensive? City's less expensive than where I live (Sweden).

Sure, Scandinavia is among the most expensive places in the world unless you go full-on luxury but I hear this shit even from Scandinavian brethren. Only thing I found expensive was the subway. Food, hotels and such are all cheaper in Tokyo.
>>
>>1292602
>Why do people say that Tokyo is expensive?
It used to be crazy expensive a few years back but the yen went down and euro went up so it got reasonable.

For a while, it was slighty more than Norway level cost of living.
>>
>>1292602
Tokyo is far better than other cities because you can be a poorfag and still easily eat well and sleep well.

Discount bentos, Matsuyas, cheap ramen places will fill you up. Sleeping in hostels and shared airbnbs are way cheaper than any other country. On the other hand if you wish to spend $1000 a night somewhere, nobody's stopping you either and you can eat at the best places in Japan while sleeping at the most expensive places in japan.
>>
>>1292602
You're Swedish. Everything is cheap compared to places like Sweden. The Scandinavians you've been talking to probably went to Japan with a general mindset that Asia is a cheap place generally speaking.

You could try to talk them into a cheaper ryokan or guesthouse. Find the kanji for guesthouse and then walk around looking for a building with that kanji on it. Go inside and see what their rate is. Some of them will house you for a cheap price, and they are basically a japanese hotel.

>>1292561
If I happened to move to the Japanese countryside how hard would it be to meet a girl? I know that sounds like a funny question but I have lived in a rural area where aside from hooking up occasionally it was literally impossible to meet a woman unless I drove to a city. I'm wondering if Japan is the same. Are they super conservative people that would frown on me having over 3 different women spend the night at my place over the course of a few months or what?

Of course I'm focusing on women, but anyone that can clue me in on life in a Japanese city that is withing 2 hours of Tokyo but has less than one hundred thousand people, I would appreciate it. Just the ups and downs, pros and cons. Shit that grinded your gears, etc.

I'm admittedly getting really tired of Japan.

I can't speak the language, so I can't get a job, and even if I could I'd work under gaijin conditions.

After 7 months I feel like I've seen what needed to be seen. I'm seriously considering just heading to Australia already, since my visa just came through. Tokyo was so underwhelming, even though I've wanted to visit the city for 10 years now.

It's impossible to make friends my age. My best friends here are alcoholic oji-sans who are fed up with the Japanese society.

Give me some reasons why I should stay in this country.
>>
>>1293015
Why are you living in a country and not trying to learn the language. If Mexican immigrants can learn English and integrate into society you should be fine
>>
>>1293020
I'm on a working holiday visa. I've been trying to learn the language through living with the locals, and while I can get by somewhat, it's nowhere near enough to get a job.
>>
>>1293027
Not him but why don't you teach yourself the language instead of learning passively through day to day life? You can learn hiragana and katakana in 2 days, after that some basic kanji and vocab should be enough to at least get you started. An hour a day can make a huge difference.

>I think you guys know jlpt is required to get a job
The school that I will be attending soon works with employers that hire gaijin without having to take a the JLPT. It really depends on if you go through a program or by other means. When I was searching for a way out there I found multiple job postings requiring no prior testing or certificates showing your proficiency in the language. Hell, most of the time the only requirement was that you currently resided in the country, no degree, no tests. If anything most places that accept gaijin will only say that they "prefer a candidate with knowledge of the language", you can still do interviews and what not. It seems to me that you aren't trying very hard or looking at all of the possibilities at hand to find a job. Since you have a working holiday visa you're already a step ahead. If you really wanted to stay and work in the country you would put some actual effort into the process and apply to every job you can and accept the first offer, that way you would get a foot in the door and have a stable income while you improve your proficiency in the language and look for a job that you enjoy or can make a career of. Also, friends should really come second on your priority list, I understand full well that it is nice to have people you can hang out with and what not but there is a huge difference between wants and needs. I'm only 21 so my world view may be shallow or you may disregard this whole post. if you are serious about staying in Japan and becoming an actual member of their society than you need to make use of every resource you can find. Even if you get a shitty job you just need to suck it up until you can find something you enjoy and become stable. Put some effort in ffs.
>>1293020
>If Mexican immigrants can learn English and integrate into society you should be fine

Hello frens

I'm going to Kyoto in late November/December, just looking at some sites to visit now.

I'll be doing a day trip to Nara and Himeji from Kyoto, but I wanted to know the best sites to see/things to do/places to eat etc. in Kyoto itself - in particular, I notice there is Saiho-Ji or something that is a moss covered temple a little out of the way, or there is also Gio-Ji, another moss covered temple closer to some other sites (Kameyama-Koen and Arashiyama).

If anyone has been there and can comment on whether it's worth visiting both or if Gio-Ji will satisfy my moss fetish, that would be helpful. Hoping to do the few temples around Arashiyama, see the monkeys there (is it even open in November/December?) and figure out the rest from there.
>>
So, I'll have a lot of days off this october/november, and thought about a trip in Japan for dem delicious autumn leaves. Travel length would be at least 10 days, max would be 15.

Already did the usual Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima/Miyajima on a previous trip.

Planning on returning to Kyoto again, but what other places should I go to? I'm definitely a nature guy and I like old stones/history. Not a fan of modern cities/clubs/bars and things like that.

I want to go to Japan for the first time from America. My plan is taking a non stop flight that would be 14 hours towards Japan. Anyone got any tips for a first timer trying to do this?
>>
>>1293079
JR generally isn't worth desu, especially in your case. you're going to be better off just buying the separate tickets since 1. you're only there for 5 more days and 2. you're only going to Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. When I went start of this year it was like $10 to get from Osaka to Kyoto, and a flight is often cheaper between Tokyo and Osaka than the trains. A 7 day JR pass is what, 200-300$? More? not worth.

If you care for history and will be going to Kyoto, an amazing place to vist is over in Shiga on Lake Biwa. You could spend a couple of days in Otsu seeing the history Museum, Miidera, Sakamoto, up on the cable car to Enrukuji, then up the east side of the lake to Hikone Castle (one of the few original castles with museum and below an amazing Japanese garden. Hikone is a whole day) and there's also Azuchi with he castle ruins but don't miss the archaeological museum. If you'rte up the east side and also have time Taga Taisha is a magic little place but not easy to find.

All my "heavy" smoker friends were like "maaaaan, there's not even a proven case of addi- wait what were we talking about?"

Except they were fucking miserable without their daily smoke, they would be pretty obvious with their red eyes and slurred speach and wouldn't manage to sleep without a fat joint before going to bed.

However I have also known a few professionals who were able to enjoy a joint after a hard day's work and keep it at that. Those who have 100% quit all admit they are better off the stuff though.

Flying out early tomorrow morning (boarding at 5:35, take off at 6:15) for a semester abroad in Machida. One stop in Detroit then I'm on my way to Yapan. This is a dream come true.

Would it be a cop-out to join my school's English speaking club? I'd like to make friends with native students, and was thinking if I hit it off with someone there, they could help me practice my Japanese outside of the club. The dorms are also integrated and appear to have holiday parties and things throughout the semester, but otherwise I'm not sure how to keep myself from gravitating towards the other foreign students. I mean, I guess that's inevitable, but still.

Sorry, I'm pretty nervous. Any general advice for a first time 留学生?

For someone that has no degree and works minimum wage at the moment, but has a considerable amount in savings. Is going to a japanese language school a viable option? just to stay there for 9 months and maybe get some job afterwards that would allow me to reside in the country for much longer?

>>
Flight and accomodation excluded how much money would i need for a comfortable 7 night stay in japan?
>>
>>1294698
Depends on your accomodation.

hostel < cheap ryokan < business hotel < fancy hotel < fancy ryokan
>>
>>1294697
> good job
There are no good jobs in Japan. English teacher salary is shit there, and working for Japanese companies is hell on earth. The best case scenario would be working for a foreign company that has an office there, and to do that you'd need a skill that'd make you worth hiring, not Japanese.

If you just want to go for a while though and don't want the hassle of teaching then a language school will hook you up with a student visa to stay in the country longer than a 3 month tourist visa.
>>
>>1294721
thanks for the advice, so basically work as much as possible and save up fuck tons to move there to learn the language? I see no way o f making money once in the country if I were to just be with the school. The website says they'll help you find part time work and it also doesn't say how much time is spent in the language school learning the language
>>
>>1294722
If you've never been, I'd really recommend going on a tourist visa and spending several months there before you commit to moving there and learning the language. Japan has a reputation of being a dream-killer, seeing as 90% of people who think they want to move there get sick of it and leave after a few years.
>>
>>1294725
From what i've read that does seem quite apparent, i'd spend a few weeks in rural japan exploring and seeing the culture and also seeing tokyo or osaka to get a real look at life there before deciding. A holiday basically before i decide whether I would truly want to spend almost a year there.

Yeah I know but I was wondering the exact outrageous demand they want.
I know some words like slave, ~1million yen. Have house/land.

Honestly hoping the NK situation makes everyone scared so accommodation is cheaper.

My bad, i didn't have anything to gauge off of...

>Will stay in Tokyo or travel around?
Tokyo is a must but I'm planning my trip as follows tokyo>kyoto>osaka or tokyo>ryoken>kyoto (haven't decided). Tokyo will most likely take up the lion share of my time

>Do you like to eat out,
Yes, but not necessarily fine dining, street food is what i usually go for on my travels

>or are you going to try and eat konbini meals as much as possible?
Dont know what that is bit if its street food related than yes, this will be my primary option

>Will you be going out drinking?
Not a big drinker but i do like to go to bars occasionally maybe 2-3 days max

>Do things more expensive than shrine-seeing interest you, like Fuji-Q or DisneySea?
I dont know what any of these are but both sound interesting, my main reason for visiting japan is to see mt. Fuji and if possible to climb it
>>
>>1294337
My ass made it to the airbnb safely, give me a few days to get my bearings, and then we should be good to go
>>
>>1294960
yeah if you want to go to thredbo with better snow, go to niseko. you can take the cheapish shuttle buses from sapporo/chitose to furano.

tho im not sure about general public transport in furano, there are taxis but I never used them.
>>
>>1294766
Go for a smaller trip and save £2-3k.

Almost all the forest around Kyoto is cryptomeria plantation (Japanese cedar) but nevertheless there are some marvelous hikes. Ones I recommend in order of accessibility:

Just to the east of the city you can cross the range of high hills to Yamashina by numerous hiking trails which just go up from around Ginkakuji and the road running south against the base of the hills with some smaller temple gems - Honen-in, Anrukuji and Reikanji. There are trails leading up the hills so just keep climbing and you'll find your way. Excellent view from the summit and then Yamashina is vaguely southeast, downhill, you'll find it anon.

Maybe 15km northwest of the city is Takao. Take the bus (half hour). Three very important temples here - Kosanji (World Heritage and where I suspect your photo is from). The southern most of the three, Jingoji, walking around the temple I found a trail leading up the hill and I hiked up maybe 45 mins to a commemorative grave (I assume a monk or something) from where is a splendid view down over Kyoto and the Kamo Valley. Takao is in a mountain valley, and there's also a trail down the river which is about a two hour hike to Arishiyama. Finding one's way going downstream is always unmistakable ... and it's well marked.

My pic is from Muroji - hard to get to but a good day trip from Kyoto. It's south of Nara city at Kintetsu Murouguchi-ono Station and there's a bus 5km to the temple. Here are 1000 year old temple cedars and a wonderful collection of Heian buddhist sculpture. It's a very important temple. There is a hiking trail to the station which I took to reach Muroji but missed a turn and got lost. Confused for a while when the track petered out, but went back and found my way fine. I'd allowed a half day so took the bus back to the station as I wanted to see the uni museum at Tenri on the way home to Kyoto.

Any questions about finding these places, the tourist info centre at Kyoto Station will assist and provide maps.

>The food

This is such a fucking meme. The food is good no matter which major city you're in; if you find any substantial difference it's most likely due to dining at an overpriced tourist trap on the main street.
>>
>>1295123
Food is noticeably better in Osaka. Not a meme at all, it's what Osaka is known for.

I can guarantee you that if you undertook a blind test of the same dish from Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto you'd have no idea which was from where.

If my kids and I live near Orlando, are the Disney and Universal parks in Japan worth taking them to, or is it pretty much the same shit?

Disney is pretty much the same shit, so its not worth it.

200-300 yen just on the trains
Food budget from 10 to 30 yen a day.
Buy chuhai strong 9% at konbini for a buck fifty and get plastered on the street instead
Bring at least 10000 for climbing Fuji if you're doing the walking stick. Each stamp is 300 yen and I have almost 30 on my stick.

I spent like $2000 in two weeks but I was splurging on shopping too. Spent like $200 at akihabara, $300 at DisneySea (Plus $100 on tickets) and another $200 at Nakano Broadway. $100 on baseball souvenirs. $100 At the Tokyo Flea Market. $200 on clothes in Harajuku. $100 on a Tokyo Wide pass to get me to Fuji and Takaragawa Onsen. Realistically you COULD get by with $500 if you're not doing any heavy shopping, crazy eating or crazy travel. But since you're going out of Tokyo your travel budget will probably crank up.

As a mega Disney fag DisneySea is the most impressive theme park I've ever been to. Definitely go it costs like $100 for a two day pass. Tokyo Disney is pretty much the same as any other Disney but Sea is fucking amazing. If you skip Tokyo Disney Id still recommend the two day and just spending both at Sea
>>
>>1295250
Is going the evening to Disney Sea in the middle of the week a good idea? I only want to do the main attractions and the ticket is 30 or 40$.
>>
>>1295255
Middle of the week is the best time. Evening tickets are after 6 right? Only thing id be worried about is getting everything done in time for the last train. You can't really leave at like 1am like most other Disney parks. Fast passes will stop being given out at that point so you're potentially looking at hour+ waits still. If you're only doing the big things then it still might be worth it but their shows are awesome and Sea is worth just exploring for the architectural work and themeing. I went all day and found I was able to Fast pass Tower of Terror and immediately jump on Journey then immediately on 20,000 Leagues, Tower, Fast Pass the rollercoaster (meh) see a couple shows including the main pirates summer event, Fast Pass indy and then see Fantasmic. Hardly any waiting and I hit everything I wanted to do including time to shop and admire.
>>
>>1295259
Thanks for your answer.
So one full day would be better so we don't run everywhere while trying to get the last train. Thing is my sister would also like to go the Universal Theme Park in Osaka, and since our budget isn't really expandable, we'll have to choose one park or the other. Disney Sea looks awesome, though.

Same here man

Anyone know what's the body temperature limit for getting on the plane?
>>
>>1295272
How well can you fake it? Pretend it's an 8 AM class or you're going to work or school hungover. You can pass out in your seat.
>>
Going to Tokyo tomorrow. Should I withdraw all of my cash for the trip from Narita Airport right away, or just some then get more at random 7/11's I come across?

Just wondering about best rates.
>>
>>1295291
ATMs will give you the market rate but you'll probably take two fees, an out of network ATM fee and a foreign exchange fee.

Probably the only reason to make a bulk money exchange is if upon landing you'll need to start paying big bills immediately. (Like a study abroad and renting a dorm).
>>
>>1295004
Thanks mate.
>>
>>1295293
I've noticed 7/11 charges the least extra fees of all the ATMs I've tried
>>
>>1295293
>>1295353
When I lived in Japan it was always advisable to take out as much as you feel comfortable taking out since for me one fee was fixed and the other was a percentage. Lots of little fixed fees adds up
>>
>>1295216
>How do I life
Uhmmm, what you always do when you have a cold flu? I advise you take a blanket in case that they don't have any on your plane. Turn off the A/C above your head and ask your neighbors to do the same if they don't mind. And buy their soup and tea. Go hit your local pharmacy.
>>
>>1295415
>turn off the A/C
Don't
While annoying is is far better for you than the regular circulated air in a plane
Unless you're in a 787 you should keep your A/C on
>>
>>1295415
Theres no such thing as a 'cold flu' you twit.
Theres a huge difference between the common cold an influenza.
>>
>>1295429
Is this true? What difference can this make?
>>
>>1295457
The A/C air is not only filtered (even if recycled) but the force of the A/C blows away stale air which accumulates in the plane
If you don't you will either be breathing stale air or second hand from someone else's A/C which is far more likely to actually make you sick
