So I managed to accidentally book a flight to Sofia, Bulgaria this week

what...what is there to do there?
Is it going to be a headache if I can't read crylic?

I heard Sofia itself is a bit of a wash out, but I'm not sure

Sofia local here. Why did you book a flight here if you don't know jack shit and you can't properly research on your own?

Of course it's going to be a headache. Other than city center where street names are dual, everything else will be Cyrillic.

Don't be a prick and be respectful and I'll help you with questions.
>>
>>1290962
I was going to book a flight to romania, but I was drunk and accidentally booked to Sofia, hence my lack of research

do you know any resources for pronouncing crylic, my attempts at study have been fruitless and I don't even have a mobile phone to translate.
I will try to get a phrasebook in sophia

do you know the best places for hiking?
which are your favourite citties?

I hear most tourists are greek, turkish or russian so I'm not sure how far english will get me

I know right

it's not even the first time this happened to me.
A few years ago I got drunk in spain with some hungarians and came to my senses in budapest airport arrivals lounge with only half my baggage and no idea which country I was in

No point in learning Cyrillic if you're not staying more than a month. You don't need a phrasebook either. Stay at Hostel Mostel and you will find English speaking people to hang out with. I can show you around as well.

Hike mountain Vitosha (2290m). It's actually in the city.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherni_Vrah

Do lake Pancharevo, also just outside of city limits.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Pancharevo

Both are accessible by public transport (0,80 euro cents per ticket).

My favorite cities are Sofia and Plovdiv. Add Veliko Tarnovo to your trip and you can basically see good parts of Bulgaria and then on your original way to Romania via bus. Plus all 3 cities are touristy so you will have some ease with language.

Tourists are varied. I wouldn't say greeks, ruuski (exception is beach, where they can be a majority alongside brits) and turks are a majority in terms of tourists.

Non-Sofian who lives there for the last 5-6 years, why do you come here? Its s meh city, outskirts are gommie block central and the inner city is yoir average european capital so aside for clubbing/shopping/going to bars theres no much to do.Its summer so you dont get the benefit of skiing at Vitosha either. You can go hikin i guess, but there way better places in Bulgaria to do so.
My advice is to go to some other comfy city like Plovdiv(its relatively close, less than 2 hours with car) once you are at Sofia, or go to the coastal/mointain areas or historic small towns and cities

No, i meant to Sofia exactly, there are amazing places to visit in the country and tourism is huge here, but Sofia is just a meh place to visit imo.
Then again, i live there for 6 years and im bored of it already, but i just dont see much to do here aside for clubbing and visiting bars/restaurants/shops/etc

Hey OP, I've been spending the last two weeks backpacking through bulgaria, I'm the right guy if you need Infos about Sofia

- you can try to book at hostel mostel, it's a very cool place, but it will probably be full
- do the free walking tour, it starts every day at 11 in front of.. some building with lions
- the main church is really cool, the others are quite meh
- visit the archeological museum, it's really worth it
- go to the vitosha boulevard at night for parties

ALSO LEARN FUCKING CYRILLIC, it makes everything so much easier and it's not difficult at all, it will literally take you 2 days and just makes your experience in eastern Europe so better
>>
>>1291138
>Rhodopes/Rila/Pirin
thanks anon

>>1291270
thanks also
Trying to learn crylic, it's not so hard actually but the pronunciations are harder.
I'l probably talk like a neanderthal but that's OK I guess, better to make the effort

Did you get to southern or central bulgaria at all?
>>
>>1290951
do NOT book randomly a flight to romania .... use couchsurfing... it is better and a lot less savage. Romanian local here
>>
>>1291272

Apart from Sofia, Plovdiv is an amazing city, smaller than Sofia but much better in almost everything, in terms to things to do and see. It's probably the city I liked the most in my trip, and it's like 6 hours of bus from Sofia at 10-15€, so if you have the time, spend a couple of days there. Look for the Hikers Hostel, amazing place.

Then I visited Burgas and Varna, nice places with lots of beaches but not that much to do. The nightlife here is a bit trashy and there are German and British teenagers everywhere, but it's still nice.

Other places that I didn't visit but are quite good are Veliko Tarnovo, a small medieval city in the north, Ruse, another small town on the border with Romania, and then some small very picturesque villages on the coast like Nesebar and Sozopol, one of them is also a World Heritage site so they must be cool
>>
>>1291272
> I'l probably talk like a neanderthal

you learn Cyrillic so you can read, not to talk. Talking with locals will be impossible anyway if they don't know English, but being able to read road signs or to know on a map where is the hospital, the pharmacy, the restaurants, those are useful things.
>>
>>1291284
It's not really 6 hours by bus to plovdiv, is it?
>>
>>1291285
ah, I see

when I was in china I used a paper and pen because I could write phrases even if I couldn't pronounce them
>>
>>1291290

I was surprised too, but it actually was. The highway is in very good condition and there was almost no traffic so the trip was quite short, I'd say 5-6 hours.

Another advice, stay away fromtrains, they are terrible. Always use the buses. Also in Sofia becareful with taxis, the best companies is Ok Taxi, also Panda Taxi is fine. Always check if they have a taxameter on board, if not, then ask them first how much they want to carry you there. Consider that a 10 minutes bus ride in the city centre shouldn't be more than 7-8 leva or around it.

Sofia to Plovdiv is 1 hour 15 minutes by bus. You are smoking something. If you drive more than 5 hours in Bulgaria in any direction you will leave the country.

See the attached train schedule, the slowest one is 4 hours, the fastest is 2 hours. Buses are 1 hour.

I recommend the 2 hour trains though, half the price and you get a very good scenic route. Plus it's guaranteed transport, buses get full and don't carry extra people. On trains you'll always get a ride.
>>
>>1291315

> If you drive more than 5 hours in Bulgaria in any direction you will leave the country.

Then I'd like to know why it took me 9 hours to go from Varna to Sofia by Bus

Or why it took an amazing 15 hours to my friends who were travelling with the night train and doing the same route

To OP, dont listen to this illiterate nignog and stay away from trains, half of them are still from the soviet era and always have delays or some broken shit. Use the bus or blablacar, and always add some 1-1.5 hours to the time they say on their website, due to traffic/bad roads/ fucking or donkeys sheeps crossing the streets

this is a nice website to see the timetables and to have a general idea of the price for bus and train tickets

Cause you're a shithead, lad. Buses and trains stop at various places to allow people to get on/off. There is a mandatory break period for journeys longer than 2 hours and they don't drive as fast and probably don't even use the highway. I traveled Odessa - Burgas - Sofia recently, and we didn't use the highway in BG.

I did the Sofia - Burgas run with a car for 3.5 hours. I don't know and don't care about your friends. OP, do whatever the fuck you want.

Me and a dude friend came unprepared to Bulgaria east once back in the day. 10 days.

Literally nothing to do in the balkans except for shitty turbofolk "parties" with cheap alcohol, and that's only a selling point if you're a filthy degenerate or a poorfag. If you meet anyone who doesn't like turbofolk, it's because they prefer american or spanish pop music, or 80s metal music. There is absolutely nothing worth buying either. Locals will flock to you once they realize you're a foreigner, out of some deep seated yearning to prove they're also "westerners". Either that or because they're secretly after your money. The "culture" scene is tied together by the absolute lowest common denominator. "Classical" is the same as "opera", "jazz", "swing", "country" and olden folk music to those people. Once you've gotten past the subject of comparing countries and political smalltalk, there's nothing to talk about with anyone and they just start dissing their governments or their fellow countrymen, unless they're pass-out-drink or high out of their minds. There are some qt's but only the ugly bitches speak English. If you meet anyone who reads, it's always just stephen king and terry pratchett. ALWAYS. Autobiographies of local criminals are also very popular for whatever reason, it's almost like Mexico in that regard.
If you're visiting the balkans for hiking, it's pretty much the same as everywhere else in europe in that regard.

>>1293177
Girls are really fucking hot, but if you are visiting a big city like Sofia or Plovdiv, most of the girls are smug cunts and suffer from the "daddy's princess" syndrome. If you go to Sunny Beach/Golden Sands/whatever popular resort youd most certainly score unless you are incredibly autistic or remarkably ugly.Dont advice you to go there tho, its crowded, full of shitty clubs and waster Brits/Danes/Swedes/Germans/Ruskies that cant handle their alcohol

>>
>>1293315
how would you describe the girls there? i have a hard type figuring out the typical bulgarian woman physique.
>>
>>1293559

Slavish with a light Mediterranean flavour. Sometimes it's the opposite. They all dress really nice and are very slim, but so many of them have those line shaped eyebrows that imo give them a really sluttish and cheap look
>>
>>1293559
Ive been to the Balkans twice and their girls are fucking hot.Imo the second hottest girls in Europe after Ukrainian girls, especially the Romanian and Bulgarian chicks. Its mainly because of how diverse they look, if you take a walk in Bucharest or Sofia you can see girls looking from borderline Nordic/Russian/Baltic/etc to girls that could easily pass as south Italian/French, Spanish or Greek. Its like USA but without the nigs or spics.
Avoid the gypsies tho, they are basically the niggers of the balkans, but less violent and just beg/pickpocket/steal.I havent seen many tho, from what ive heard from the locals they rarely leave their ghettos unless they need to go "make money" downtown
>>
Failed my hike in Rila before I even started

nobody outside of Sofia seems to have maps, and literally every tourist center is closed.
Lesson learned

staying overnight in the monastery is fantastic though, really glad I did that.
But it turns out the hike to the seven lakes from here is 8 hours, and while I can handle that I have literally no idea if I would be stranded when I got to the lakes

is there ANY information about getting around out here that isn't in crylic?
wikivoyage has fuck all, and lonely planet is paywalled

Also learn fucking Cyrillic man, it will take you literally 3 hours of practice and makes everything easier

I was there a couple of months ago. You have to park some distance away from it, and walk there, you don't want your car seen near it.
There is also a nice Russian church very close to it, and a big historical monument from the Russian-Turkish war.

The dish itself is just full of garbage though, in the early 90s a lot of punks went there with actual hammers to break everything in protest against communism, all the floor tiles and wall plaster even.
>>
>>1295088
If you are in Sofia and like abandoned buildings research Cherveno Zname sports hall. The building itself is massive, entrance is easy, you just have to do it during the night and you might find some nice souvenirs such as sports medals to take back home. I've been a couple of times and there are no junkies, just the occasional group of teenage explorers. Tip: bring a flashlight with lots of battery, you dont want to get lost in the dark on the bottom floors and wherever you see stairs leading down, follow them, although the massive pool on the first floor is an amazing sight, I find the lower floors a lot more interesting to wander in.
>>
Got into the dish monument last week

had to go underground but it wasn't too serious, but the walls are prone to collapse and there are holes in the floor you could fall through

it was really cool inside though, some of the murals are still there.
Tower is totally blocked, rumours there are cameras too

There was security blocking the way in, but you just wait them out; there is only one road up so they can't sneak up on you
sometimes they take the name of intruders, but nobody gets arrested normally
