What are some fun things to do in Detroit?

urban exploring in Detroit is overrated, try it in some cities in NJ. Camden, Trenton, Newark

Michifag here.

There's a quite a bit to do and see around Downtown.

I wouldn't recommend going too far out of your way just to see Detroit, though. Most of the city is just about as ugly and inhospitable as your picture shows it to be.

Having said that, there are some cultural and entertainment options in Detroit. There's an opera house, an art museum (which almost had its collection sold during bankruptcy proceedings), and an MLB and NFL stadium (the Pistons play in a suburb).

Greektown has some nice nightlife and restaurants.

I occasionally go to Mexicantown on weekends for the cheap food and lively scene. While it's not as safe as Downtown, Midtown, or Greektown (all of which have crime rates below the national average), it's not a bad place to visit.

You more or less need a car to explore Detroit unless you're just planning to stay around the waterfront and main attractions.

There are public buses that go to the suburbs, but they're ghetto as fuck.

My ex is Indian-American and lives in Livonia; sometimes she has to commute to her company's alternate office in Detroit. She says the bus ride Downtown isn't bad, but there are a LOT of fucking weirdos, even during the day.

Indian's in Livonia? I thought it was all white people fleeing the negro tide. Farmington is where all curry munchers are at here in Oakland. Guess the more you know.

For OP:
1. Go see the Henry Ford Museum if you can. I'm 21 and I still get the urge to go see it every now and then. Really well done stuff, and they try hard to keep a positive theme of optimistic futurism.

2. Downtown Detroit has a lot of hipster restaurants, bars and to some extent shops. Of course this also comes with the hipsters themselves. I will never patronize those faggots with my money, but if you're willing to fund soulless commercialism and vain jackasses, you'll get the best tasting food in the city outside of ethnic family restaurants.

3. Ferndale if you're a homo or some other degenerate. Very strong LGB community and compared to the useless niggers before, they've actually done a damn good job of fixing the city up and making it into a desirable place.

4. Royal Oak, another hipster/douche hub. Lots of decent bars and places to smoke. Restaurants are shit-tier and I won't budge on that. I eat out all the time and they can't seem to get their act together on decent food, which is strange for a hipster town.

5. But Michfag, WHERE do I go specifically?

Bucharest Grill in Detroit
Chicken Shack (local classic chicken) in any nearby suburb of the city
Lafayette or National Coney in Detroit (You'll get some heated debate over which is best, but both are a staple of the city's identity)
Zayeqa in Farmington (I go here compulsively, the Paki's know how to make damn good stuff)
Go anywhere in Dearborn for Mediterranean food, the whole place is a hotbed of arabs/ninja outfits and falafel joints.

Greektown is ok, not that big of a deal. More famous for the stripclub and casino than anything.

Mexicantown is overrated garbage, and I'm saying this as a Mexican. They pretend to at least try doing authentic mexican food, but it's garbage compared to even places outside the city.

Detroit isn't really a good place to vacation, not saying it's dangerous or anything, it's just meh
>>

Does an authentically Michigan / Detroit food exist, and if so, where to sample the best example?
>>
>>1287566
Newark is actually a reasonably safe city if you stay in the East Ward (Ironbound) and Downtown. Outside of that, yeah... it gets bad.

I'd vouch for Trenton and Camden, as well as Chester.

I stayed at the Newark Hilton after arriving at EWR from the other side of the world, during check-in I was told, in no uncertain terms, do not go outside at night, and to take a taxi/uber anywhere. It sure as fuck did not feel safe when I walked across the road from Penn Station, in fact I asked a group of cops for directions and they escorted me to the front door. Fuck that place, I am never going back.

Eastern market, Coney Island dogs. Hammtramack in general??? Idk

whenever i'm in detroit i make it a priority to vote for a black democratic mayor, then blame white republicans 2000 miles away for my problems

I've been in and out of Newark Penn Station dozens of times, late at night. It's not squeaky clean by a longshot, but it's not terrible. And if you were at Newark Penn and needed to go to Newark Hilton, and if you also were scared of actually having to go outside, then you don't have to--there is an enclosed bridge connecting Newark Penn to the hotel.

It was reasonably late, on a Friday evening, the streets were full of the local "wild life", hence the warning I imagine, and it's not that I was scared, but when a local says "don't go outside" to a 6'5" 240lb Australian, I listen. It was late, I'd just flown for 24hrs and was in a foreign city, hence I missed the fucking sky bridge, though used it the next morning to access the station & GTFO of New Jersey.

Michfag here again

If you want authentic Detroit food, you just need to go to any Coney Island or Buddy's Pizza/Jet's Pizza location. That is as authentic as our food gets.

The "New Detroit" is still tossing around ideas for staple local dishes. Frankly I don't think they'll ever succeed, because Hipster Gastropubs aren't fucking unique to begin with.

If I want to eat three leaves coated in olive oil for 25 bucks I'd sooner go eat at my local taco bell and ingest nigger spit mixed with dog food.
