Hello, I'm planning on studying abroad next year and am trying to decide between the University of Kent, in Canterbury, and the University of East Anglia, in Norwich. Anyone know anything about these universities, cities, or regions? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
They are both full of insufferable lefties, I'd recommend Canterbury if you want more nightlife and connection to London. Norwich is more English and out of the way

>They are both full of insufferable lefties
Do you mean the cities, or the universities? I think the simple fact that they are universities implies that they'd be full of lefties. My university in the US is no different unfortunately.
>Norwich is more English
Could you elaborate on that please. Is it the demographics of the university? And speaking of demographics, which city has the least muslims?

Live in Norwich, went to university in Canterbury and I say go for the UEA. Canterbury is a nice place to visit, but it's a complete fucking hole to live in as a student as it's just too small and quaint.
Norwich is great tho. In my opinion just as pretty as Canterbury but with so much more in terms of pubs/things to do (it'd be difficult to find a small city that's better for pubs than Norwich). Clubs are a weak link in both, but at least Norwich has a good deal of bands that visit, Canterbury gets sweet fuck all because of how small and close to London it is. Also, I kinda feel that people in Norwich are more friendly than people from Canterbury but that might just be the accent so YMMV.

Thank you, that was insightful. One thing I did like about Canterbury though was how close it was to London. Not really for London itself, but because London is a transportation hub that I could use to travel to the rest of England, and to the Continent. How easy is it to travel from Norwich? Also, what is there to see/do in the surrounding area?

Demographics and general culture.
Norwich is close to the broads which is well worth a visit
>>1270132
Thanks, that may make a big difference for me. If I'm going to England, I want to experience English culture and meet English people
>>1270093
Basically the difference is that to London it's a 2 hour train journey from Norwich as opposed to a 1 hour journey from Canterbury. Norfolk's reputation is that it's a boring inbred backwater which isn't really accurate, but it is rural and public transport is limited. The coast around Norfolk is really good and the Broads are always worth a visit, and you can do day trips to places like Cambridge and Ely as well as picturesque towns and villages on the coast like Sheringham and Southwold by bus and train.

How's the public transportation in Norwich, and to the surrounding areas? I'm guessing there's buses and trains around. Also thinking about bringing a bicycle or buying one over there and using that to some extent.
>>1270314
Norwich is small enough that you can walk everywhere really, and there are semi reliable buses/trains to villages (as long as they're on the right line). A bike is a good idea in Norfolk as it's pretty flat (Norwich is comparatively hilly tho)
I don't know about Cantebury but UEA always does very well for student satisfaction. I'm from Norwich also. It's a beautiful city, possibly the most beautiful in the UK. Few foreigners although that population is growing. It's quite English middle class, a lot of well to do places. It's a small city but offers a lot of good bars, restaurants and eateries. Plenty of things to do in the city and things going on. Independent cinema, bands. It can be a little hipster. You have some of the most beautiful coast and nature on your doorstep. Everywhere in the city and in the region there are places full of history.
Transportation within the city is fine, but outside is a little poor. Trains are ok but expensive. Busses will take you to more smaller places in Norfolk, you'll struggle to explore Suffolk though which is equally as beautiful. We have an airport, it might only really take you to Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Tenerife but they're all worth a visit.

Thanks! How are the prices of airfare from your airport compared to taking a flight out of London?
>>1270818
>>1271006
For Amsterdam, the actual flight is more expensive but factoring in transport to either a ferry terminal or Stansted (nearest major airport) it works out roughly the same.
Flying out of London just involves getting the train down to London and working it out from there. So basically as annoying as it would be if you lived in London+two hours.

>Demographics and general culture
This is weird but one thing I like about Norwich is that there's a mosque right next door to a gay bar. Dunno why but I find that pretty funny
>>1271148
Thanks, I'll have to look into them
>>1269510
If it was me I'd pick Canterbury, you are close enough to London because of HS1, you are about an hour and a half away from the continent, and you will be living in god's county, the garden of England.
>>1271504
What's the demographics like in Canterbury, and Univ of Kent?
>>1271018
Do you have to switch trains a lot, or is it easy to get right to the airport?
I've done some work at UEA, the university looks like it's come into money, looks very modern compared to some others in the UK.
Also considering you're a student, Stansted; the nearest airport to Norwich, is basically cheap airfare central considering mainly Ryanair operates out of it.
>>1271528
Heaps of foreign students, to an even greater degree than other universities. Canterbury itself is pretty white, tho there's a visible Turkish minority.
>>1272831
That's on of the reasons I'm leaning towards UEA, I'd rather be around more English people
>>1272787
From Norwich you'll arrive at Liverpool street
stansted: stansted express from liverpool street
heathrow: tube to paddington and get the heathrow express, or just stay on the tube all the way to the airport, changing once
gatwick: tube to victoria and get the gatwick express
>>1273025
For Stansted it's easier to go to Cambridge and change there
>>1272849
Norfolk people have a weird accent which you'll probably find funny/difficult to understand. Just remember that not matter how much you think it does, they don't sound like the people from Hot Fuzz
All I know is
the Higsons come from Norwich
and they eat a lot of porridge

>>1272800
Thank you, I'll be sure to check Stansted out.
>>1271018
can fly to amsterdam from norwich infact.
>>1269510
An ex of mine went to UEA
Not the best uni but seems sociable enough, nightlife is very good.
Lots of foreigners though.
If you meet a short South Korean studying Medicine in now second year make sure to hit on her, she's easy af :)
>>1273408
>Lots of foreigners though
In UEA or Norwich?
>If you meet a short South Korean studying Medicine in now second year make sure to hit on her, she's easy af :)
ha, thanks, I'll keep it in mind
>>1273452
The foreign population in norwich is small and most are eastern european and white, so they don't stand out.
>>1273452
At UEA. I've never actually been there myself but all my exes friends seemed to be Eastern European.
UEA definitely seems like a fun uni though. Transport is also a thing you should have a look at, idk which place is cheaper & faster to get to.
>>1272800
>Stansted; the nearest airport to Norwich
Other than Norwich airport
>>1273408
>nightlife is very good
In terms of clubs its actually really not, prince of wales is shit, other places like lcr and waterfront are ok but most students are wankers anyway. Still decent pubs but ofc they close at 1 latest.
>>1271528
I imagine the exact demographics are on Google there are a fair few Somalis that seem to hang around but overall it's pretty white. Kent in general is a pretty comfy white home county outside of the city in particular.
>>1273949
I'm not too into clubs, pubs would be more my scene. Any local ale specialties in Norfolk?
>>1274761
Yes, lots of local ales in East anglia, just explore them
>>1273553
I really have to worry about as, we will cut ur head on the street in the name of religion. Wake the fuck up.

What's the transport like around the countryside?
