As always, feel free to ask about:
>Traveling to Japan
>Living in Japan
>Teaching in Japan
>Joining the Yakuza
>Getting your weeb fantasies crushed

*Info on prostitution*
Please try to refrain from asking questions about prostitution.
Japan's sex industry is almost completely inaccessible to foreigners who do not speak Japanese.
What is available can generally be found in the following links
>http://rockitreports.com/category/sex-in-tokyo/
>http://erolin.net/

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Please refer to the old thread while it's still up: >>1266133

So i've been exploring the second hand marketplace for clothes but i'm looking for a couple of specific things when i go in october.

Firstly, anybody know of neighborhoods with a good used videogame selection? Looking for old consoles and the like but would like to avoid Akiba tourist traps as much as possible.

Also interested in Denim.
>>
Hey guys. I just arrived at Narita. I'm currently using T-Mobile international roaming and it's decent so far. Just wanted to give my input since there are a few people in these threads that ask about T-Mobile international data
>>
>>1268908
>but would like to avoid Akiba tourist traps as much as possible.

what makes you think Akiba is a tourist trap? Just because there are a lot of tourists there? It's primarily geared towards Japanese Otaku, not tourists
>>
>>1268915

Mostly just parroting, i suppose. It's defined as a tourist trap by a lot of people so i guess that's why i call it that. I guess i'm still looking in the Akiba area but for more stores akin to super potato.

Will I have any trouble bringing NHS prescribed ADHD medication into Japan?
>>
>>1268902
Would someone in the thread that can write Japanese please do a quick google to see if there is any show in Tokyo next week with Dinosaurs? I can only find English articles that are outdated and lack information.
>>
>>1268924
They will throw you in jail if they find you with any stimulant medication. They also probably won't check your luggage, but that's a decision for you to make.
>>
>>1268936
Even if it's something that's non-addictive, has no high or anything of the sort, and is prescribed by government doctors to primary school children?
>>
>>1268908
You'd likely have a better chance of finding old consoles at Nakano Broadway than Akiba, but Akiba still has a lot of stuff. I'd only call it a tourist trap if you're only going there for "lol japan so wacky and randum XD". If you're a weeb and know what you're looking for, Akiba's pretty likely to have it. It will be crowded though.
>>
>>1268938
What ADHD medication do you have that fits the non addictive category?

I going to japan for my first time. Hoping to spend 3 weeks there. My plan is to visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Does anyone have experience visiting these 3 places on a single journey? You're going to have to do some research. You need to submit a Yakkan Shoumei if you want to bring your methylphenidate prescription.
>>
>>1268988
a quick google about that suggests I don't need a yakkan shoumei to bring in methylphenidate if it's less than a month's supply, does that sound right?

A while back I started a thread with questions about my upcoming trip to Japan, when I hadn't book anything.

My flights (booked together) are:
08. July:
Düsseldorf - Frankfurt 11:40 - 12:30
Frankfurt - Nagoya 13:40 - 08:20 Uhr +1
09. July:
Nagoya - Sapporo 09:50 - 11:35
14. July:
Sapporo - Tokyo (Haneda) 13:30 - 15:05
21. July:
Tokyo (Narita) - Düsseldorf 11:00 - 16:00

My first stay is in Sapporo
Check-In 9. July
Check-Out 14. July

My second stay is in Tokyo
Check-In 14. July
Check-Out 21. July

This is my first trip alone and to another continent. I hope I don't fuck up anything. I already exchanged 60000 JPY in case my Credit Card (Visa) doesn't work. Another fear I have is, that I might miss the flight from Nagoya to Sapporo.
>>
>>1269091
Just a heads up, you can't buy most things in japan with a credit card, its highly cash based. Even train tickets are all cash unless you pay for the fancy express lines.

So I just bought a round ticket to Japan, and am pretty fucking excited. I'm gonna stay there for about 3 months, but I have some questions that are currently bogging my mind.

I've never traveled abroad. Once I get off the plane, what is the customs official gonna ask me?
Specifically, do I have to show him my bank account to prove I can support myself while in Japan?
This scares me a little, because I plan on staying in hostels and couchsurfing, and spend as little as possible. My parents may give me money while I'm there if things get rough. But I'm nervous that if the official doens't think I have enough money for my stay he might send me back. So, do they ask for evidence of economic supportor not?
>>
>>1269157

Pretty sure if you have a return ticket they don't give a shit. Shit, I didn't and they didn't seem to care.
>>
>>1269159
you went there on a one way ticket? did they ask you for proof of onward travel?

ok buddy, this is why everyone hates weeaboos, I stayed in Japan for 2 weeks and I was ready to get the fuck outta there, Japan is not like people say it is, atleast test the waters before going for that long of a time
>>
>>1269161
Not him but I've been to Japan without a return ticket and they didn't care.

>>1269157
I don't think they're even allowed to ask that, assumin your country gives you visa free entry for 90 days. No fucking idea what you're going to do for 90 days though. Have fun
>>
>>1269165
I agree with this guy, as I said I have no idea what you're going to do for 90 days, maybe spend more money and go to other parts of Asia?
>>
>>1269171
>>1269170
>>1269165
I'm not a weeaboo in the slightest, I'm just interested in the country and it's culture. I speak intermediate Japanese and want to get to know their land as thoroughly and fun as I can.

And I thought almost every country got super histerical about foreigners traveling with a one way ticket, it surprises me that the Japanese of all people don't seem to give a shit.
>>
>>1269170

Of course they're allowed to ask. Why shouldn't they be able to?

>>1269180
>almost every country got super histerical about foreigners traveling with a one way ticket

Depends where you're from (i.e., what passport you carry). If you're from a first world country (or close to it) it's generally OK as they won't suspect you of planning to become an illegal immigrant. If you're from a third-world shithole it's a different story -- you may very well then be asked to show proof of onward travel and/or the ability to support yourself while in Japan.

>>the Japanese of all people don't seem to give a shit.

They very much give a shit. Again, it depends where you're from. If you want better advice, better answer this question.
>>
>>1269165
He can just fuck off and explore other parts of asia if he gets bored and doesn't wanna stay the full 3 months, christ why does nobody on this board have an ounce of common fucking sense...
>>
>>1269184
not that guy, but I'm from Mexico and haven't been asked for POT the few times I've gone to Europe. Never been to Nippon, tho, but I'm saving up for it. Will I be asked for a bank account balance or something?
>>
any way me and my 3 mates (17-18) can visit a bunkasai, i've googled for 10 mins and couldn't find shit. cheers cunts
>>
>>1269225

Mexico is included in the visa waiver program, so probably no. If worse comes to worse, as long as you can show them some cash plus a credit or debit card you'll be fine.

Wrapping up my trip shortly. Best experience among the locals was hands down stumbling into a karaoke bar in shinsekai.

One guy wanted to practice his English and between our shared knowledge everyone was able to communicate. We drank and sang with them then wandered around together. Aside from one of the dudes reaching for my buddy's junk at one point, it was excellent all around.

In Hiroshima one dude wanted a photo with us. Kek

I was just going to go with one of the Japanese data sims you can get from Narita.

How does T-Mobile international compare? I don't already have a T-Mobile sim, I'm on Giffgaff (O2) so I was wondering whether if it was worth it or I should just go with bMobile or Sakura.

I don't have a smartphone, but I feel it might be extremely useful in my trip.
I mostly need to check hyperdia, googlemap and have an access to my mails.

I may also bring a memory card so I can use it to take pictures.

Is it a good idea to rent one since there is a simcard in the offer. I don't want to buy one for myself, and I don't really have the time before the trip anyway.
>>
>>1269274
I see. I was planning to alternate between hostel and manga cafes. I'll guess I'll go full hostel.
Do you recommend renting bikes. Should I just go subway/buses to get around or does anybody recommend cycling in cities?
>>
Haneda Karaoke tonight. Anyone want to join?
>>
Should I worry about getting yen before I go, or can I just stick my card (mastercard debit) in an ATM in Japan and get money out at a reasonable exchange rate without a fee?
>>
>>1269273
That was a weird machine, then.

>>1269274
Capsule hotels are not actually a cheap option. The tend to be about double the price of a shitty hostel. (Their primary demographic is drunk salarymen who missed the last train and need somewhere clean and private to crash, not cheapos who can't afford a full room.)

>>1269282
Don't be so easily discouraged. Try staying in a cafe for a night, and if it's awful, go back to your hostel. Also different ones have different options, so there might be some that are more cozy than others.
>>
>>1269413
depends on the area and season, I sometimes found capsule hotels to be cheaper than a hostel dorm bed
>>
>>1269270
I stayed in one, you only rent the things for hours and not days so if you want a place to keep your shit you'll have to pay for a locker on top of it. Aside from that it wasn't comfy (rubber room with rubber pillows) and it was a bit bright because people still needed to be able to read manga. You'd be better off with hostels for sure.
>>
If I'm already here, and want a Japan rail pass, do you think I could just buy it and get a friend to send it to me? Do they actually check your travel plans?
>>
>>1269409
I would get a small amount just in case. Ask your bank or cc company if they have international ATM fees. Also call them and let them know you're gonna be using it in Japan so they don't freeze your account or something
>>
>>1269409
You could always open a Charles Schwab checking account to pull out your money while you're over there. Free account with no foreign transaction fees on the debit card, they don't charge for out of network ATMs, and any ATM fees charged by the ATM owner are refunded at the end of each month.

Hey guys, about to leave for Japan for 19 days, and just wondering if anyone has any tips about gyms in Japan?
Is it going to be difficult and expensive for me to find a nice gym to train in for an hour or two during my stay?
I am planning to ride the Shimanami Kaido while I am over there to keep myself fit, and climb Mt. Fuji too. But it would also be nice to pop into a gym and maintain my muscle mass while I am visiting. Any advice please, /trv/? Or any suggestions about other activities I can do while I am over there to keep fit and active?
>>
>>1269568

How much muscle mass do you honestly think you'll lose in 19 days? I'll give you a hint, it's fuck all.
>>
>>1269571

my wording was poorly chosen, I simply enjoy training and would like to keep myself in fine form for when I return so as not to lose too much progress. also I don't want to be gaining too much fat, either.
>>
>>1269578

Well, you can go running and do bodyweight exercises obviously and they have a lot of free outdoor playgrounds with gymnastics stuff like pullup bars and rings. You should be fine with that. I'm not much of gym guy myself, but from what I've heard, the gyms in Japan are pretty shitty especially when it comes to weightliftung and I'm also not sure whether you can just walk in.
>>
>>1269571
That's what I say every time the 19 days expire.

Didn't realize it was July 4th here and presented my JR pass at a regular jr station. It expired July 3, clerk told me it expired, I apologized and asked him for how much the fare was, which was only 170 yen.

He never looked at my passport or anything but he did keep the pass. I hadn't entered the station, so I didn't get to actually use it, but I'm still nervous about the possibility of being charged a lot of money for the trips I took while it was valid.

Given the circumstances I just described and me being a foreigner (like all Jr pass users) would you say that the situation is likely going to be fine or that I should expect to be charged a penalty?

Finally got my itinerary mostly together, wanted to share and look for some things I shouldn't miss. It's a bit rushed but I think that's doable:
29. July: Arrive in Tokyo, spend night near the airport

30. July: Move near Shinjuku, do some shopping and preparation

31. July: Get up early in the morning to catch a train at 5-6 AM to Okayama. Gonna be only using local trains so the trip is going to take around 12 hours in total. Depending on time/motivation, see something in Okayama.

1. August: Take the train+ferry to Naoshima and explore the island (+overnight stay)

2. August: Move to Takamatsu, buy Shikoku rail pass, spend day in Kotohira and move to Matsuyama in the evening (check out Dogo Onsen)

3. August Day trip to either Ozu or Uchiko and see Matsuyama castle

5-7. August: Kochi. Not sure what I want to do here exactly but the town seems cool

7-9. August: Iya Valley. Want to do some hiking and exploring here.

9. August: Make my way back towards Tokyo, staying overnight in Kobe

10. August: ??? not sure if I should go straight to Tokyo or possibly stay somewhere near Shizuoka or so for another night. I would like to see some tea fields with a Fuji backdrop but not sure if August is the right time for this.

11-17. August: Tokyo

As I wrote this down, I noticed I have one additionally day in Shikoku I didn't account for. Any recommendations on where I could add it?

Thanks!

You might want to be sitting down for this news.

Cheap places to live are shitty places to live, bud.

Could you elaborate? Is it just that people there don't use tinder, or is it more a problem with cultural differences in relationship expectations, poor communication, etc.?
>>
>>1270069

Both I guess. People don't really use it, and when they do, they seem to miss the point.

There's sluts, no doubt, so why not give it a shot. Just not the range of sluts lime back home.

What do you think about Asaka, Saitama? Is it a good spot to get to central Tokyo at any hour?

I'm covering some similar ground, not quite overlapping with your dates.

Suggestions for Shikoku (will have car, have a night booked in Tokushima), and northern Hyogo (Travelling w/ rail pass - staying Kinosaki)
>>
In Tokyo subways, can you get on the train with your bike (if it's not too crowded I guess)?
>>
>>1270046
I doing my first trip to japan in a week.
I wanted to do a lot of shit including going to Shikoku but in the end I had to scrap that part.
Iya Valley was part of the plan but back then I read that it's kinda annoying to access without a car. I hope you looked into that.

I wishto give the proper time for Shikoku another time since there seem to be plenty of comfy towns all over it.

Hi. This is my first time posting in /trv/. In a month I'll be leaving for Tokyo to study a semester abroad. I'm pretty much ready, the only thing I have left to do is pack.

But there is just one thing I'm left to wonder about: I read earlier in this thread that Tinder isn't extremely useful for hook-ups. I should also mention that I am a lesbian. What are my options for dating foreign/Japanese girls? Should I still try Tinder or are there any other dating app options that are foreigner-friendly? Other than datingapps, what is customary for meeting other lgbt people? Other than the gay nightlife scene, I mean.

Also, is the average Japanese person OK with a gay foreigner?
>>

Faggots don't get a whole lot of respect in Japan. Pretty rare to find some 'out n proud' types I'd imagine.
>>
>>1270105
Yeah, that's what I am thinking. Still looking for dating tips (digitally or irl) from my fellow homos if they post here. It shouldn't be that hard, I hope. I have no trouble landing a date here where I live, just need to be able to adapt.

You just have to keep refreshing, eventually the network will be accepted and will ask you to accept terms.

It's fine.

Hard refreshed a shit ton, only a handful of networks would eventually work and speed was always dogshit on them. Mapping things out while outside my hotel was an exercise in frustration on public wifi.

Just try any place that has a Hard Off nearby.
There are shops called "Book-off" everywhere in Japan that have a decent /vr/ selection, but the best /vr/ related things are in the Hard-Offs, specially in the "Junk" corner. You will find stuff they mark as "broken" but usually it isn't or is easily repairable as far as /vr/ stuff goes, and it is cheap as fuck. They have bins full of games there but it's mostly crappy sports titles and RPGs, which might only be interesting if you can speak fluent Japanese. They do have "working" stuff (consoles and games) elsewhere in the store but most of the stores know their prices, even though it's still much, much cheaper than in Akiba.

Food and shopping. I could have easily spent an extra $100/day but we were travelling too much and having even a small carryon luggage was already a pain.

If you're studying at an international uni, you probably won't be interacting with anyone super traditional. I'd say most people won't care unless you try and make it their business, and in that case they'd be judging you more for broadcasting personal stuff than for being gay.

>>1270217
>Also anyone be in japan during a Typhoon?
Yes, a few. I haven't found them to be a big deal if you're in a city, unless you need to go somewhere --
it's an absolute bitch getting out to Narita when all train and bus routes are closed.
>>
>>1270230
I guess I should go into a bit more detail.

Doing:
>2 weeks at the same hostel in Tokyo so not traveling with additional bags outside a small backpack for day trips I might be taking. Hostels paid for so don't assume it in my average daily cost
>~2200 yen, 500 for snacks/water
>~1000-2000 yen for bus day trips in and outside tokyo
>~4000 yen for trinkets (save anything not bought for next day)
8700 tops

Weekends
>add ~3000 yen for drinks/bar
11700 yen on weekends

I'm not huge on buying tons of stuff either, outside of a few small trinkets(used video games, books, some CD's) and what not I am mostly backpacking + additional carryon in japan.
>>
>>1270245

>Yes, a few. I haven't found them to be a big deal if you're in a city, unless you need to go somewhere -- it's an absolute bitch getting out to Narita when all train and bus routes are closed.

So i'm trying to schedule a trip to Japan in the upcoming months, and i'm finding really difficult to find Shinkansen schedules to see if it's worth purchasing a JR Pass

Is there a gaijin-easy and comprehensible timetable or something out there?
>>
>>1270337
http://www.shinkansen.co.jp/jikoku_hyo/en/sanyou/sdh_tokyo.html

Less than a minute on google. JR pass does more than bullet trains some busses allow you to use your JR pass as well as small trains.
>>
>>1270100

To answer the question for real, Shinjuku-2-Chome is the gay nightlife district, there's likely to be bars and hookup spots there, and the average Japanese person won't care (being a foreigner will be the more defining characteristic). Foreigners (especially whiny beta males) will definitely be angry about it though, especially if you start banging more Japanese girls than they do.
>>
>>1270100
I'm convinced that the people saying tinder doesn't work in japan probably never made a tinder except for japan, uploaded a total of 1 awkward bathroom mirror selfie photo and didn't just swipe yes to everything and actually tried being selective.
>>
>>1270357

Why do you say that? I've had success with it in multiple cities back home, but people just don't use it as much here, and those that do tend to be trashier on average. Not sure what's controversial about that opinion?
>>
Any decent guides on finding cheap/free events or things to do in and around tokyo?

Found a few things but most seem to be old posts that I can't confirm are still around. Going to be in tokyo for about 20 days before using my JR pass to get around to some other places like hiroshima and such

What's the best way of getting from Tokyo to Niigata?

If no other stops, busses can get you there pretty quick and painless for 3500 yen, will always depend on what other stops you have as well

Price? Speed? Comfort?

I am probably gonna jump around Japan with a friend in september for about a month and I am wondering what Ill actually need, thinking to bring 2k for spending/food money since I am staying with my friend in his rooms for the duration of the trip. also how hard is it to find some whores for a stupid gaijin.

I have never traveled outside of the country and I am in the middle of getting my passport.
>>
>>1270445
Depends, do you have a method of transportation with your friends? JR passes are a good value, but that doesn't mean they are cheap. 2k in food/spending isn't a whole lot for the month, but some anon's have reported getting by on half that for the month.

>also how hard is it to find some whores for a stupid gaijin.
Whores? meh, hard if you don't know the language if you have local friends ask them about touristy spots. With 2k though drinking/party spots might be a bit tough. Gaijins? probably easy in September, just look for anime hubs and such
>>
>>1270451
Yeh I would probably end up needing a train pass, I also know a few guys that are locals so they might be able to get us in somewhere I guess. Thanks for the help.

though what is this I hear about them needing to check your bank account? I'll have the money but now Im kinda worried since I'm technically a NEET because all my work is under the table.
>>
>>1270477
>though what is this I hear about them needing to check your bank account?

Pretty sure that is only for people doing extended stay visa's over 90 days or something, they want to make sure you have enough to cover you. Never got asked about anything when booking my month in Japan. Anything else about bank accounts is usually let your bank know before traveling so you can get money out at 711

I visited the Iya Valley by train and bus many years ago. It can be time-consuming depending on where you're coming from and you have to be careful about the extremely infrequent buses, but I found it do-able and pretty low-stress (the journey is gorgeous if there is visibility). Hotel Iya Onsen's baths down by the river were sublime in May (they're not very hot).
>>

I believe you can, though I think it is pretty pricey (~1700y). The logistics of getting there, having a soak, and getting back might be tight. I stayed a night at the hotel.

>Also good to know, any hikes/mountains you would recommend there?
Unfortunately no, I didn't spend much time in the area at all. I do hope to get back there and do more exploring someday.

I'm curious if there's any westerners living the meme of working with games in Japan ?

I have done expat work in some countries so far. Most pay significantly better because of foreign specialist skills. Even in other Asian countries like China or Singapore.

The few people I know that went to Japan for this type of work (both westerners and other Asian) seems to be weeabos that sold out much to cheap. I doubt there is many professionals or even expats other than teachers here but I thought I'd give it a chance to ask.

hey guys, got a question about employment

I'm going to be studying at Doshisha University in Kyoto for a year from September and I'm looking at ways to make some cash on the side if I don't get the JASSO scholarship. My back up is English teaching, as I've been teaching Japanese online for over a year now and know there's good cash in private lessons, but I've heard about opportunities of being a fake priest for marriage photos. I'm 6' 2", blond with blue eyes and bearded, so I figure I fit the image well and sounds like a lot of fun, anyone know if this is still going? I've heard that it was a fad in the '90s and isn't so popular anymore, but I'd like to hear if anyone's had this job or knows anyone who has,or any other fun jobs available for 外人 in Kyoto

Ah damn. I will probably leave Tokyo right when things start to taper off.

don't expect the evenings to be much cooler, and make sure your hostel has A/C in the rooms. I've spent many sleepless nights in a pool of my own sweat in cheap dorms. Other than that, sounds like you're covered.

>>
>>1271016
I happened to watch a TV special on that place - if it's Airin-ku - and similar Japanese ghettoes/transient-worker towns, where people who'd lived there for years talked about it.
Foreigners just don't get targeted at all, is why. They provide money to the local businesses, whether hotels or brothels, and the local yakuza doesn't need international attention when Japanese people have just as much money. It's explicitly because it's such a bad neighborhood that foreigners get ignored on pain of tangling with the yakuza - no local or criminal wants awareness of their neighborhood to turn international and likely bring a raid in time for the Tokyo Olympics.
If you're wondering, the TV special is here.

From what I know, gay guys aren't differentiated much from straight guys in Japanese culture. The only flamboyant ones are 'okama' who really flout it and get some stick for it, often cross-dressing. Women, on the other hand, seem worse off than men in most parts of society due to muh patriarchy, but as keeping such personal things to yourself are so highly prioritised there it shouldn't be an issue. if you get stick, it'll be because you're foreign before being gay

So here's what I got; I'm a jobless, 22 year old American ( of Pennsylvania ) Female that's dropped out of high school, and my dream is to visit Japan, possibly live there for a bit of my life. Every time I've told this to another, they would hint to me that I would have best luck with becoming a language teacher, I would be teaching English, but also I'd be learning Japanese before traveling.
Does that sound about right? I haven't looked much into everything and I would truly appreciate the help I need to fulfil my dream. Whether its linking me to a website to further myself, just telling me what I need to know if you're plenty experienced with this stuff already, or anything else I can't think of at the moment! Thank You!
>>
>>1271183
>Does that sound about right?

No, it's completely incorrect. You cannot get an employment visa in Japan (to teach English) without a college degree. Sorry to crush your weeb dreams, but it ain't gonna happen.
>>
>>1271183
In order to live here, English teaching is probably the easiest route. However a bachelors degree is required to get the visa for such a position, so unless you get a high school degree and then get a bachelors, you're pretty much out of luck.
>>
>>1271183
Show your tits, whore.
>>
>>1271183

You don't need to know Japanese before going there.
You can't get an employment-oriented visa without a bachelor's degree.
You can visit. You can try to get married. You can probably yakuza your way into the sex industry, though that's more common for Russia/SEA and your life will not be pleasant. You can try your hand at one of the 1-2 year cultural experience/etc visas, but you'd need money to live off of. Not much else you can do.

That's the real world for you. Think of it from their point of view: what do they gain from you joining their society? You buy into their social safety net, but what do you contribute? Not trying to be mean but the world's full of closed borders.

Also need to ask yourself why it's your dream if you never went there. Easy way to join the disillusioned directionless weeaboo cohort is to follow the dream blindly.

Gaming is literally the worst area of tech to work in and Japan is literally the worst (first world) nation to work in.

Working with games in Japan sounds like a nightmare, and I love both games and Japan.

You'll have an easier time starting your own company and disrupting all the slow and backwards Japanese companies, but good luck figuring out the Japanese market or making any business deals.

Yea, it was shit. There's nothing good on the conveyor anyways, so you just end up ordering whatever you want like any normal restaurant.

How are the Japanese about swimming in lakes? It's really hot here right now and I feel like I should get out of the city and cool down in a pretty Japanese lake. I need to get to Sapporo; flights to CTS transit through Narita or Haneda with layovers from between 75-100'.

Is that sufficient time to disembark, clear customs, retrieve luggage, transfer from international arrivals to domestic departures, re-check baggage, and then board with a reasonable cushion in case of delays?

I've read that Narita is generally quick (almost everyone transits through in <30'), but I haven't found as specific information about Haneda.

If anyone has general advice for travel and stay though I'd appreciate it. I'll be in-country from September '17 to August '18 on a student visa.

Doesn't sound like you have a whole lot of motivation

Here's what you want to do:

-Travel to japan for a few months, live as a resident and see if that's actually what you want to do; look into WWOOF

-If that ends up being something you want to commit to, find a source of income

-Look into fully testing out of a degree, there are a bunch of resources online

-Get motivated

-Spend a year~ or so working through your degree

-Get your degree, then get a TEFL cert

-Apply as an alt or look for job listings on gaijinpot

-Move to japan and become a living meme

I went to one last night in aki, it was expensive because I went to a popular one because I was already out of time and energy when I started looking for one, but for anyone wondering or wanting to try it out, I'd recommend it, especially if you bathed in the craziness and loud sounds and music coming from everywhere all day, this thing is like a temple, I've never felt so relaxed in my entire life.
There's something about the place what makes it extremely comforting, the drinks are most of the time free and you can stay the whole night for ~2kyen usually, so it's a very good price considering your position.
Some has showers, some don't, some have beds and some don't as well, if you're around 5feet10 you won't have any problem, but some of the rooms might be too short for taller guys.
Concerning the demographic, I've been kinda surprised to see that more than half of clients were actually girls, even overnight.

If anything, I'd like to try out some more, but they are kinda hard to find and the best ones are usually not displayed on googlemaps, if anyone knows some other interesting Manga kissa, especially overnight ones, please let me know.

Tips regarding climbing Mt Fuji?
I'm currently living in Osaka Prefecture. The cheapest way to get to Fuji would be a night bus so I'll probably take that, try to sleep on the bus, then wander around all day and maybe sleep in a park before going to climb at night to catch the sunrise.
I've got good mountain gear, just missing a flashlight. I want to see the stars there although I don't care so much about the sunrise which is why I want to do it at night, but what do you guys think about climbing at night, is it overrated?

Is it best to bring cash in japan?
Should you exchange to JPY before you leave or when you arrive in Japan? If so, any recommendations for good currency exchange places?

Or should you just get a travel money card, load it up, and withdraw a few large chunks of cash every now and then?
>>
>>1271705
just withdraw money at 7-11. they only accept withdraws of 100 dollars or more unfortunately. and the rate of exchange is roughly 1 usd : 112-118 yen these days. its not terrible if you wanna make big purchases. other wise its easy to get some good food and drinks and basic needs stuff like slippers and even knick knacks at thier 100 yen stores in "ginzas" which are basically malls. you can use visa for cabs and stores, but SOME barbershops and 100 yen stores are cash only.
>>
>>1271705
Narita is the one airport in the entire world that won't devastate your anus when changing currency. They have extremely competitive rates. If you have cash, exchange it when you land at Narita. Or, just withdraw money at 7/11 whenever you need it. Same good good rates (whatever your bank charges, basically).

>>1271707
70% of the stores there are also cash-only, and that number goes up drastically when you leave tokyo. Don't let yourself travel without cash in Japan.

I'm planning on going to Japan with a friend (third time for me, first time for him) around New Year's, partially for Winter Comiket, and we were planning on making it about three weeks.
The issue is that both of us are power-weeaboos, and are either not interested in or have already seen the usual touristy sights. I was there last year around New Year's too, which means I know roughly what happens around then and how crowded shit gets.
We'll probably end up having a lot to do between food, drink, gambling, shopping and things that pop up along the way, but if there's anyone who has something they think is a perfect fit for two hardened weebs, we'd love to hear it just so we have time to plan.

We're both young men in our early twenties - skinny computer-repair-store type and Indian-looking guy with big hair. I speak enough Japanese to handle most everyday situations and conversations, though I'm not about to claim I'm not awkward.
One of us is interested in figures, the doujin industry and all stripes of moeshit, while the other is into 48 Group/Sakamichi Series idolshit, Japanese right-wing politics and owarai.
We're not interested in using the gaijin card to get in anywhere - we go where we're allowed to, and if we're not allowed, we're not allowed.
We haven't decided on the exact city yet, and we might either do the Tokyo-Osaka-Fukuoka route or pop up past Niigata first to see a bit more than the backs of tourists' backpacks.
Food, drink, out-of-the-way sights and the like are all welcome.

>>

>>
>>1271810
Not him, but from Germany you can find great deals, around 500-700€ usually.

Quick Breakdown:

I went in the Summer of 2015 for roughly five weeks (June to Early August). The round trip ticket was about $1700 from NC to Narita (Delta).
I booked a decent AirBnB in Otsuka (Tokyo) for the entire duration of my stay ~$950.
I bought the 7 day first class JR Rail Pass for about $340. Traveled to Kyoto by Shinkansen and stayed at a decent hotel for 4 days ($35/night). I used a rented SIM card for roughly $45 and came with 5gbs of data. Used the JR trains countless times around Tokyo ($1.20/one way). Went to Pallet Town and Joypolis (Odaiba) and spent a bit of money for admission fees/souvenirs ($75). Manga Cafes/Internet cafes/Esports-SQUARE/Arcades probably ran me about $200 in total. Budgeted about $30/day for food and daily spending.

My total cost had to have been around $4500 for my five week venture.

You can really make the trip your own though. If you want to live off of 7/11 food and cheap ramen shops you can do that. Skipping the rail pass and only staying in one spot saves you a bit of money. Travel during a less busy time of year (October - January) for great deals on flights. Depending on your location, the flight will easily be your biggest expense. If you are a nonweeb and don't buy figures and go to maid cafes you can save a ton of money. There are a lot of things and places to see for little to no cost. Don't think you will see everything Japan has to offer in your short trip. To sound as cliche as possible, get lost and explore. There are many small shops and restaurants you will never see from the main streets. Traveling with a friend can help reduce cost when choosing where to stay.

For Edo period buddhist and shinto temples/shrines, Nikko has some of the most ornate and intricately detailed architecture that I've seen. Not much to see in Rinnoji as its under heavy restoration, but the rest of the shrines and temples still had a good bit to see when I was there in April despite restoration work. The museum on the grounds also has a ton of artifacts from the temples and also (in the free section) has an exhibit on the restoration process.

I was thinking cargo pants made from poplin.
>>
>>1272128
>cargo pants
You go there.
You see what people are wearing.
You buy something generally similar at Uniqlo.
It doesn't need to be high fashion - just for Christ's sakes try to not look like a goon, because you'll get worse service and so will every other tourist after you.
>>
>>1272157
What happens if me (about 6 feet, about 250) and them (definitely not either of those) are nowhere near similarly sized?

Different person, but I'm going to be staying long-term on a student visa.
>>
>>1272251
First of all, stop saying "they".
Second of all, there are Japanese people in all shapes and sizes. I'm like an inch shorter than you and still spot people who're as tall as me.
Third of all, Japan is a country like any other, and has shops of all stripes for both natives and foreigners. Even if no Japanese person was as tall as you (and you'll be surprised - you're taller than the average Japanese man, sure, but the average of 172cm includes all the elderly men alive in 2010), the country, especially the capital city with the biggest metropolitan sprawl in the world at close to thirty million people depending on where you draw the line, would have plenty of shops for tourists.

If you really, honestly worry about these things, and if you honestly harbor stereotypes like the "big American six-foot man crush puny four-foot limp-dicked Asian domestic abuser and take all women" one, you should probably not go unless you're willing to have to admit you were very wrong.
Do you honestly think Japan is a third-world country where you can't get a fucking pair of pants, because the tiny Japanese dwarves are eclipsed by your American glory and none of them have ever thought of selling clothes to foreigners?
The only reason I don't call you a casual racist is that the expression is overused by casual racists, but rest assured, the sentiment is there.
>>
>>1272270
For a lot of brands I have to wear XXL sizes because I'm a 48-50 " chest. It can be really difficult to find nice clothing in that size, especially for casual wear stuff. I have a jacket that I love which technically fits, but I can't even zip it up because there's literally not enough material to go around my chest (and stomach, which is its own problem).

Same with pants. Getting a 30, 31 " inseam no problem. Getting that inseam in a 38 or 40 or 42 " waist can be problematic, and I'm shopping in my city at stores I know well with brands I'm familiar with. Finding shoes can be a huge pain too. I wear 13/46-47.

I don't think wondering about clothing availability (especially since university correspondence tells me I should pack/bring everything I think I might need because it specifically says men of my height/weight/shoe size are SOL) is particularly unreasonable, so I would appreciate if you didn't give me an unwarranted 'tude.
>>
>>1272278
You do know that a million tourists have asked that before and you're not the first Mighty Whitey to go to Japan and then bitch about being overweight, right?
There are entire stores literally dedicated to people like you, who instead of doing what they can (slimming down for a lot of Americans) or just not coming in the first place, feel that they have the right to be catered to in a country they came to not because of an invitation, but because they thought they had the right to go there for fun.
Search for those. Go there. Buy your special American pants and special American jacket at those stores at a 150% markup instead of at Uniqlo, then go to McDonalds and eat a Big Mac, and then go back to your Holiday Inn and never see any of Japan.
Yes, I am mad. I am mad because even if you didn't pick up on it, every word you write drips with smug, underinformed American entitlement and the snide belief that you are so special that other countries' booga-booga monkey tribes either can't imitate Great America or are hissingly afraid of your terrifying 186cm and 100 superflous kilos.
Do you honestly, from the depths of your heart, think that finding clothes in your size in a thirty-million-plus metropolis is going to be a challenge just because the people there are on average a bit smaller than you?
You're not that fucking unique, and even if you don't think you have your head up your ass, you do. Thousands and thousands of people have come before you and will come after you - everything you have a problem with has already been remarked on by someone else, and if it isn't fixed now, then instead of trying to make every country you go to into Murka, just - you know - fuck off.
If you don't like something about a country, you can either accept it as a part of the country or not come in the first place - because the only thing Japan needs less than one more tourist is one who comes only to try to make it more like home.

What's Okinawa like, guys? For both visiting and living? I've always wanted to move to Japan. I don't think it's too unrealistic of an idea to move to Tokyo and live/work there for a long time (visited many times, working on saving up to move) and retiring in Okinawa

Where can I rent a pocket wifi router, getting it today, in person, and not at an airport? Everything I see from google suggests delivery takes multiple days for delivery and doesn't talk about collection besides from airports. I'm in Osaka right now and when I'm done with the router I'll be in Tokyo
