How to get phone service while traveling for a few weeks internationally(america to greece)?
My phone service doesn't have coverage at all in europe (virgin mobile) so how can I get service or wifi? It seems like a pretty serious topic that I couldn't find anything about from google. thank you.
I always just buy a local sim, as it's cheaper than roaming. You can use skype, google talk, facetime etc to stay in contact by VOIP. There are "International Sims" but they are never as cheap as the local carriers.
However I believe T-Mobile offers a really good international data service on their plan. It's not that fast overseas, but it's an alternative to changing your number.

Yep. Voice is .20 cents a minute, but text and data is no charge. It's a great deal.

Regarding Greece, go into a shop with a sign like pic related. Buy a cosmokarta sim card. It costs 10-15 euro. Have your passport with you.

Buy a local sim card. Ask a local or whoever you're staying with where to buy one. Just look for a store of whatever the major telecom is in the country you're visiting.

1. Land in country
2. At the airport one of the companies will have a booth
3. Give your phone at the guy + some money for the service
4. He'll set up your shit

I have the same question, I've never had much success with this.
Supposedly my carrier, Sprint, has a partnership with MoviStar, so I was able to eventually get my phone to work in Mexico, but this didn't work in Thailand...everyone said "just get a SIN card" I did. It didn't work. They said phone was locked. Paid Thai guy to unlock phone, he said he couldn't, it was impossible.

Your phone may be shit. 99.999% of phones can change sim without being locked.

I think some phones in the u.s don't allow sims other than the initial carrier it was bought from, they even have specific models for specific carriers. I think they would need to contact the carrier to see if they could unlock their phone either by paying a fee or they might allowing temporary unlocking when they travel overseas
