What has this board come to?

>90% of threads are /adv/ material made by people who visit here just once for us to give them free 'places to go' or 'tips'

Other 'general' threads are full of shitposters and idiots asking the same 5 questions over and over again.
I used to love coming here but can't you guys see what for a fucking shithole this board has become?

let's brainstorm and share some ideas on how we can improve /trv/
>>
>>1259636
No more sex tourism threads
No more Japan-shilling in Korea threads
No personal blogging
No more threads about non-pleasure travel (work, study, residence/immigration, teaching English, etc.)
>>
>>1259720

I hate to say it, but I largely agree.

While I don't have any problem with threads about 'non-pleasure travel,' I wish people would stop responding to those who clearly won't go anywhere farther away than their own backyard.

For instance, there are always a handful of threads along the lies of, "I hate my life and want to run away / teach English in / start a new life in Country X. What can I do?" or "Is it possible for a 19-year old NEET with no social skills to take a 10-year long trip to Madagascar?"

Clearly those folks have no intention of going anywhere and just want to fantasize. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that, but I've noticed more and more "fantasy-travel-wank" threads over the past couple years.

A lot of people just ask a question or two and disappear. Usually it's pretty clear they just have a tangential interest in some place and aren't actually going there.

Definitely more /pol/ and /int/ here than before, too. I frequently contribute to India threads, and it's more and more "rape lol!" and "POO IN THE LOO!!!!" than in years past.
>>
In other words, Make Trv Great Again
>>
>>1259720
I agree with these.

Also the clear race baiting threads, there are a few on the front page right now.
>>
>>1259636
Just update the sticky with a google doc or pastebin of commonly asked questions honestly.

You could reduce most of the commonly asked questions with just making a pastebin of common questions and answers for most generals and such.

My biggest issue with trv threads is the
>I just booked X what do I do lol. Figure it for me
>Going to X, dunno what to do when I get there, please make my schedule
>Where should I go?
>Where can I go for Drugs?
>I have a less than 12 hour layover in X, what can I explore at in X city?!?!?

>>1259720
>No personal blogging
I don't mind if they are interesting and have insight into their travels, what annoys me is threads that are. GUYS I SAW BIG BEN! GUYS I SAW TOYKO TOWER GUYS I SAW RANDOM BEACH SOMEWHERE! LOOK AT MY SHITTY CELLPHONE PICS!

>No more threads about non-pleasure travel
be okay if it was just like a working over seas general or something. However, I do agree some of the work threads are stupid when the OP only tells people after 10 posts "oh btw I only have 1 day free and no car lol"
>>
>>1259720
Half of those are part of /trv/. Your list is pretty shitty. Nothing wrong with sex tourism or non-pleasure work as long as you're not an idiot about it.

And why did you, on purpose, leave out the one main problem right now, which is the /pol/tards shitposting? /trv/ can be improved again by taking a zero tolerance to /pol/tard posts. Every time you see a "hurr durr sweden france durka durka jihad blown up" grade post, report it.
>>
Agreed, I haven't been here for that long, but I feel like it's gotten really bad during the last couple of months.

It's sad to see all the interesting destination threads go unanswered, while people love to talk about Japan or Paris.

I really want to read a lot about different aspects of travelling and exciting destinations, but can't really get that from /trv/. r/solotravel and r/travel are pretty much shit, and while the Thorntree forums are great, I feel that they're a bit too fragmentized because of the country specific forums. That's great when you're actually going somewhere and need some info, but it makes it harder to just browse for inspiration. Would love to hear recs for other good online forums
>>
>>1259866
I agree with everything here.

Rules need to be enforced but really it's as always /pol/ shitting up everything.
>>
>>1259866
>>1259924
It's not that /pol/ shits up stuff, it's people get so easily baited that every single "babies first troll thread" gets bump to the bump limit, every single /pol/ copypasta gets 5+ replies and will derail a thread and every single legit concern gets "le pol lelelele" replies because if there's nothing else to contribute at least you can be offended.

This is 4chan, you won't get virtue signal bonus points from your FB friends, you can't build a reputation and you can't show off your post history or how much of a oldfag you're.

>don't ask what anyone else can do to improve /trv/ ask what you can do to improve /trv/.

Don't reply to the obvious shit threads, don't fall for the fucking stupid one line bait posts, stop being offended for the sake of being offended and finally if you can't make a quality contribution don't post or at least use sage to not bump the thread.
>>
>>1259636
also /pol/ and /int/ invaded /trv/
fuck this shit
>>
>>1259932
And report the /pol/ and /int/ shitposts and hope they get deleted.
>>
>>1259932
tl;dr: newfags.
Whether it's /pol/shit or getting baited by /pol/faggotry, it's newfags who refuse to lurk moar and learn what to ignore.
Fuck every single tard who went "sekkrit klub xD"
>>
>>1259866
>Half of those are part of /trv/.
And maybe that's the problem. I don't want to open up the /trv/ catalog and see yet another thread about some dude asking for advice on where to find the best ladyboys in Pattaya or whatever.

>And why did you, on purpose, leave out the one main problem right now, which is the /pol/tards shitposting?
I don't deny that it's a problem, but it's an external factor. I'm more focused on the internal failures right now. I'm here to discuss what's wrong with /trv/, not what's wrong with /pol/ (which is beating a dead horse, really).
>>
Things aren't getting worse. Lazy OPs and repetitive threads have always been an issue. The sticky hasn't changed at all in over 4 years, so it's no wonder we get the same threads and arguments all the time.

Also, /pol/tards and bait threads aren't becoming more common, people are just too easy to troll so threads which should get at most a few smartass sages instead get 100s of replies.

/trv/ doesn't need tighter moderation, it just needs a more up-to-date and user-friendly sticky which covers common destinations and beginner travel questions.
>>
>>1260153
/pol/tard replies are definitely more common now. And they absolutely should be addressed, no one gains anything from brainless shitposts by edgy teenagers. No one is trolled by them and no one replies to them, but they just shit up threads by wasting space and replies.

I happen to like those threads.

FYI I have been non stop traveling for about 8 years. A person who has never been abroad may start off with some lofty idea they can never achieve, but they might be steered in the right direction through some good advice.

This thread is horrible, travel has some bullshit on it, but overall it's a slow board. There may be one or two semi troll threads every week or two, and they are all contained in those few threads. What is the problem with that?

Should I go on about the assholes that rain on every parade here. The people that say to use google or give snarky non answers to questions? The regular internet just doesn't have the answers you need for a lot of developing countries, and it's actually full of a lot of erroneous information. Why is it such an issue is a discussion happening you don't like if you don't have to take part in it?

Making Japan generals was bad enough, now it's impossible to escape the snot nosed japanophiles that like to explain how it's such an impossible destination that requires years of research to enjoy. I don't even bother scouring them for information, I just go elsewhere.

I have quite a few daydreams that turned into actual trips, and was considered a flake when I was younger because I was constantly brainstorming about visiting places most people I knew didn't even think about. I really don't see the issue with discussing that type of stuff, and I hate it when boards just read as instruction manuals.

I fucking hate paris, but paris threads are fun because it's such a touchy subject. Are people suggesting paris threads just get deleted or something? What exactly would a good /trv/ board look like?
>>
>>1260236
This
We need to purge the pointless board /bant/
Also /int/ is pointless as well
/trv/ is good for talking about positives of countries, /pol/ is good for talking about negatives of countries. /int/ is the bastard in the middle that shouldn't exist
>>
>>1259989
Guess which board attracts the most newfags.
>>
>>1259866
This.
>>
>>1260148
Entertain the possibility that we will have some things here that you don't particularly want to see.

On topic posts, related to travel, are not the problem. You can always skip the ones that do not interest you, hide them if you can't even stand to see them in passing

Shit threads are part of the problem. Do not reply to them report hide and move on.

Shit replies to decent posts are the rest of the problem. Repot them, hide them and move on.

Do not feed trolls. Do not reply to crappy shitposts.
>>
>>1260443
That would be /trv/, /sp/ and /int/ as they're the most newfag friendly boards without any kind of intimidating stuff.
We are the board where every fagbook or rebbit newfag feels comfy to take a shit as there're at least 20 even bigger retards to take the bait and bump shit like
>how can I be hobo in japan
to 300+ replies.
>>
/trv/ is a slow board -- WHO FUCKING CARES?
If you don't like the content in the threads you see, don't participate.
If you see shilling and blogposting (that seems to happen somewhat frequently), report it.
If we continue to lessen the amount of available topics, the board will only become slower.

Threads about travel should NOT be deleted, whether they are sex tourism, seemingly simple questions, etc. It's clear that there is an audience for these topics.
However, there should be generals made for those topics. We already have general threads for easy/random/one-off questions, which should be given more spotlight.

Something this board needs is a "degeneracy general" thread for issues regarding sex tourism. Rather than try to unsuccessfully stamp it out, it should be contained and regulated, just like prostitution.

One major problem this board has is a sense of elitism. People often think this board is better than /int/, while in reality, I could go to /int/, find a specific thread with natives where I'd like to travel, and get much better answers.

I'm certainly going to trust the opinions of /brit/ or /fr/ posters who are natives for advice over some random, slow posters on /trv/. Moreover, I can say from experience from experience they are generally more helpful and friendlier.

t. someone who started used /trv/ well before /int/
>>
>>1259845
You are probably one og those anon whi thinks any time anyone who mentions a race other thsn white, or that they are female, is baiting. I have been ashamed as a long time /trv/ler at the respones these threads get. I thought trv was better than that.
>>
>>1259866
It's a damn shame when /gif/, porn board, has a lower tolerance for racist/pol/tard posting than /trv/
>>
I use a lot of boards and I think this is the most interesting and on topic of them all. That said, if you want brainstorming, sharing more stories is probably the answer your looking for.
>>
>>1260482
It's easier to categorize porn vs politics than it is when compared to talking about international travel.
>>
You guys who constantly cry about "/pol/" shit are worse than those who post it. This new-wave normie shit of throwing a bitch fit every time you see a post that "triggers" you is ridiculous. Ignore it and move on (hell, report it if that makes you feel good about yourself), but if you don't respond to those threads or posts then they will die and people will stop making them. The truth is that this board is too slow to really function and relies on a certain amount of manufactured drama to keep it going (bait threads/posts/etc) to keep most of you normie-short attention spanned guppies happy.
>>
>>1260480
>we need more generals
Yes, I can tell you're an /int/ poster.
>>
>>1260480
You forgot to say how /trv/ should have flags, you /int/ shitposter. Stop trying to make this board into /int/ 2.0.
>>
>>1260498
You're one of those newfag shitposters obviously. The problem is not that anyone is triggered by or answers the underaged /pol/tard poor quality shitposts. The problem is that they don't get deleted, when they clearly should. They add nothing of value, and only provide high schoolers with fap material when they can feel edgy about themselves.
>>
>>1260480
>I could go to /int/, find a specific thread with natives where I'd like to travel, and get much better answers.

I've tried that, didn't work that well
>>
It's pretty fucked up a mod saw fit to delete the black anons post. I really don't get the BS posts that are allowed to stay, versus the legitimate posts that are pruned
>>
>>1260495
Let's say there is black male/asian female porn thread. On /gif/ they will prune racist responses, and pass out warnings and short tern bans to deter the behavior.

On /trv/ they ignore the racist comments or delete the whole thread. For what professes itself to be such a mature board, as a woman, or person of color, you can't have a thread on /yrv/

see >>1260589
>>
It's not so bad, but we DO seem to have a growing problem of people making threads with no content.
Just coming here for advice and shitting the place up

Sex tourists need a containment thread, or should just be banned.
This is a work safe board

Blogposting is pretty bad too, i think most of the people who do it don't realise, I've done it a few times.
Mods really have to delete these self help threads quickly to stop the trend

People making fun of those on smaller budgets happens

Part of the problem i think is that the sticky which used to be a wonderful resource wasn't updated, so everyone seems to ignore it

Agree with most of what people are saying, especially:
> /pol/-tier comments are cancer
> sticky should be updated, in part to stop the lazy "in X wot do?" threads
The solution to both of these is for mods to take a more active role, and for us to help them out by reporting /pol/-tier nonsense and not responding to it, and politely pointing lazy OPs in the direction of different websites that can answer their questions. For example, I feel like a shill when I direct people going to Central and Eastern Europe to the "In Your Pocket" free travel guides site, but it really is good.

I personally don't mind the sex tourism threads because they're actually very rare. It's more often that some anon brings up Pattaya or FKK clubs as a joke that OPs actually ask about them. An updated sticky should direct people to the International Sex Guide forum, though.

I would like to see more constructive threads about people's travel experiences, rather than just questions. There was a guy here a few weeks back raving about Malta. I'd always overlooked Malta but it got me really interested and I'm planning a trip for later in the year.
>>
>>1260617
>It's not so bad, but we DO seem to have a growing problem of people making threads with no content.
I think it's more so because there are more users making more posts, rather than before where there was a smaller community that made less (and perhaps more useful) posts.
>Part of the problem i think is that the sticky which used to be a wonderful resource wasn't updated, so everyone seems to ignore it
I'm willing to bet 10% of people who ever visited /trv/ read that thing at most.
It was always a big clusterfuck.
>Sex tourists need a containment thread, or should just be banned.
Sex tourism is travel related

>>
>>1260671
>>1260671
>That thread was terrible and full of shit. You can't possibly say with a straight face that there were genuine responses there

And that's just the issue. The OP had a legit question. You may not think so, but I have seen it too many times to not know that is a legitimate concern/goal of a lot of middle to upper class blacks when it comes to travel and relocation.

The responses were shit, I agree. And in response the whole post gets deleted, which is part of the goal of the trolls/shit posters. They got the post taken down. Moderation like that emboldens them, unlike the aforementioned /gif/ posts where the individual posters are dealt with. I have seen well over 50 posts pruned from /gif/ threads in one swoop. 50 is probably a conservative number.
>>
>>1260617
>Sex tourists need a containment thread, or should just be banned.
>This is a work safe board

I think you may need to look up the defination of SFW. It doesn't apply to written content, only images. Or else this very thread, with it's drug references, is less SFW than sex tourism threads.
>>1260617

So what type of threads would you like to see here? As you basically, just eliminated all of the threads on the board.

what follows, is this place is far better source of information about stuff to do around the world, than most of the internet. I would totally prefer to ask here instead of read some bullshit blogs from shillers/ attention whores
>>
>>1261333
>There's always a thread that asks a question that could simply be found on Google.
Google isn't a perfect solution.

1. With every search you make, kikes profit off your information.
2. The results could lead you to some inaccurate/outdated information.
3. The results may not be relevant to your needs (who the fuck wants to listen to some white college girl talk about what she packs in her purse for a weekend at Disneyland?)
4. Your searches are more likely to yield saccharine leftist views.

Because there's no need to mention it. Beside some very special occasions there's absolutely no reason to bring it up, well there's no reason at all, because you can google those special cases.

The sticky could be updated -- but of the guys who wrote parts of the current one, don't expect people will read and follow it.
>>
The only thing I agree with is the sticky needs revision for more useful info and implementation of some things. The sticky could have:

>Don't make threads about going to X without any research
>Don't ask /trv/ to make your travel plans for you
>Don't post a thread asking about things to do in X location without stating any interests
>Search the Japan/country general before asking about going there
>Review and revise the links in the sticky, add some information as to what the link is useful for
>Basic do's and don't of traveling that can be applied to anything
>Airbnb/hostel/staying for cheap FAQs, because those threads are always shit
>Don't make threads about sex tourism without searching for a thread related to where you are going
>Don't ask about bringing drugs through your airport

Aside from that I don't see any issue with the state of /trv/
>>
Why are people whining about the sticky? Seems like everyone wants it to be updated with the equivalent of "here is a list of things that aren't allowed because they trigger my butthurt". Bunch of special snowflakes who want to be mods and decide what belongs here.
>>
>>1261557

Honestly I don't see the harm in updating the sticky with some more relevant links or information. There are pretty obvious thread topics that keep getting reposted all the time. Some revision into the sticky wouldn't be a bad thing honestly. Right now the sticky is just a bunch of links without very much insight as to what you are clicking on or need to look for if you are researching a trip.

>>
>>1261782
you are a girl->nothing much happens to you, no matter what you wear.
Of course don't try it in the districts with some bad fame about them (but then again you should never go to those places, no matter what. Unless you know exactly what are you doing).
Also, don't wear clothes too skimpy, but it's again the global rule - just cover your boobs and possibly the bellybutton and nobody should rape you.

if you are a guy, things are more complicated, as you may be attacked by the hooligans (kind of similar to russian gopniks). So just stay in the tourist places or wear normal clothes, not hinting at your foreign ethnicity. Especially nothing that is known to be muslim/jewish.
Also, don't show you're gay.
Having brown skin isn't too wise either, black isn't that bad and yellow is probably fine.

poland is pretty safe country anyway and you shouldn't worry much. My advice is to be followed if you feel a bit paranoid.

Updating the links would be worth doing. Editing it to make it shorter would be worth doing -- people are more likely to read it and maybe learn from it if it is shorter.

I am suggesting that as far as I can tell no Mod lurks here, nor any janitor.

My experience has been that reported shit that is way out of line gets deleted pretty quickly. Maybe I just don't report stuff that is not so bad that it has already been reported lots of times, so a higher percentage of what bothers me gets dealt with than is your experience -- I don't know.

But I am very sure that just waiting for a Mod to stop by and notice stuff won't work here -- we need to proactively ask for help when shit gets posted.

They'll get yelled at for blog-posting, though.

To me, best bet is -- if it related to travel, and obeys the rules, it's fine. If it does not interest me, or even if it irritates me, I can hide and ignore it.

I personally have no issues with what doesn't get reported, like these threads >>1261465, my issue is more with their counterparts, and other innocuous threads, that do get reported and thus deleted for no reason. I do think mods blindly respond to reported threads here, so it's easy to troll certain threads to get them deleted.

Advertising and begging for money is usually deleted sooner-or-later but the /pol/ and /int/-style shitposting is not, and that's a major problem because it encourages it and people respond to. That's going to wreck the culture of the board faster than some poor kid who runs out of money on vacation or someone who wants us to watch their youtube channel.

We should focus on what we want to see more of, instead of rules on what is not allowed. .
I like to post ama threads when I return from a trip.
"Just spent a month in countryX ask me anything"
Or if I'm planning a trip, give rough itenerary and ask for suggestions and tips from either someone who has been there or a local.
The focus should be on details.. logistics, costs, sights, comparisons,

Gear threads are interesting too.

If people want to ask about sex tourism thats fine.
But if a thread is lazy, or not serious. don't reply to it.

Dude weed
>>
>>1262505
This unironically. I want real traveller destination threads and less /pol/, but would love to see more in-depth discussion of weed and other drugs

i rather this board have a tinge of /pol/ tier than reddit tier... I understand constant shitposting in /trv/ is annoying. I come to this board to provide input and learn from other people's experiences travelling. However, I rather not have this board heavily moderated and banning people for stupid shit. For the most part this board doesn't have a huge problem with shitposting and I like the diversity of different topics.

hitchhiking is boring as fuck, you can find enough hitchhikers at places where you hitchhike though.
>>
>>1263589
when you don't know what to look for, anything can be boring.
and no, you can't really find them on the way. They are already going in different directions at this point
>>
>>1260431
and /bant/ (my home) is the gutter that washes away the runoff from those boards
>>
>>1260431
/int/ is the light hearted bantzy /pol/. /Bant/ is just the red board version of /int/. They coukd have accomplished the same thing by making /int/ a red board, vice creating /bant/
>>
We need a /sexual tourism/ general
Not that I personally care, but it would serve as a containment thread for all the "Where is the easiest place to get laid?" Threads
>>
>>1263771
the sticky, and its wise ass pic related, should have handled that, but #KidsTheseDays

>>1262403
>but the /pol/ and /int/-style shitposting is not

Maybe you and me and everybody else needs to get more serious about reporting it when we see it, and not getting baited by it.
>>
>>1260263

underrated post
>>
>>1261498

wow with those changes this board would become boring af
You're literally banning every thread that has teh potential to generate some conversation

>>1260431
I don't get what the fuck they're even trying to do with /int/. First they create /his/, effectively isolating half of /int/'s decent content. Then they let /pol/ and generalfags run wild, driving away everyone even remotely sane and leaving the board to normalfag meme forcers and blogposters. Then they create /bant/ which pretty much is the exact same thing modern /int/ is, except it defaults to Yotsuba instead of Yotsuba B.
What the fuck is going through the minds of the mods is beyond me.
>>
>>1260532
You're the real newfag mate, calling someone a nigger isnt being a /pol/tard, it's been part of 4chan a lot longer than /pol/
>>
>>1266012
oh yeah, bump the thread all the way up, in response to a week old post

and you calling *somebody else* a newfag?
gtfo and lurk moar. next time learn to sage

>I could go to /int/, find a specific thread with natives where I'd like to travel, and get much better answers.
I encourage you to try that and report back with the answers you get
