I just noticed we didn't have one of these up. And that shit ain't right.
Welcome to QTDDTOT.
Got a brief question that doesn't warrant a whole thread's worth of discussion? Instead of sending one of out fabulous threads about ladybois or NEETs who have never left their parent's house but want to go to Japan to the archive, post it here.
Obligatory first question: I am looking for suggestions for things to do in southern Portugal. We'll be traveling for two months and Portugal will be our most relaxed leg and the one chance to enjoy the beach. With that in mind, where should we go?
>>1250413
Evora is good, but southern Portugal is full of drunken working class British package tourists. Lisbon and parts further north are much more interesting. Visit Tomar, about 90 minutes north of Lisbon, and Porto is a gorgeous city to wander around.
>>1250415
Plan was to stick to the south because we will already be there for an artist residency my girlfriend will be doing. But I suppose we can always traverse the country after that. However I am generally skeptical of posts like yours with claims like
>Don't go to Y, it's been ruined by people from X
Taking a trip starting this week (leave on Friday from the west coast of the US) and flying to Zurich (staying for a few days), then into Germany for a few days, then Belgium for the rest of the time. I have an extra day of buffer before I would really want to be home and go back into work Monday on 05JUN. Flying Icelandair and they will let you stay for up to 7 days or something like that at no additional cost.
Planning on staying in Iceland for a single night, fly from Brussels, get there in the afternoon, hang out around Reykjavik for the day/night and next morning and then flying back home. Is it worth it? I figure why not since I'm there. I know that is nowhere near long enough to spend there but figured I was there so why not?
Heading over to Hannover on Sunday until Wednesday.
Is there much nightlife there, or during the week.
Anything you would recommend in Hannover?
Also looking for footwear recommendations for a backpacking trip in summer, something thats comfortable to wear walking around but thats dressy enough so I wont be turned away at bars
Hey anons, I need your advice.
Do you think that a budget of 1,900 usd will last two people for 7 days in Tokyo?
Flight and hotel accommodations are already taken care of. What I'm worried about is the travel, food, and activity cost while in Tokyo.
Thanks in advance!
Oh, and if it helps, we're going to stay in Ueno from may 30-June6.
>>1250436
Yes, it is possible.

Well if accomodation is already paid, the budget should last.
Transport in Tokyo/Yokohama area is not that expensive. For the meals in between check out the massive shops on every corner of FamilyMart and 7/11
I'm a US citizen traveling to Japan next year. I've never flown internationally. Should I get a passport before booking the flight, to make sure the info matches up? Or would it be okay to book before that?

>I'm a US citizen traveling to Japan next year. I've never flown internationally. Should I get a passport before booking the flight, to make sure the info matches up? Or would it be okay to book before that?
Next year? It's all a little early yet. If you think you need to book your flights now, for some festival window, massive travel holiday, group tour...then I guess do that. It's not exactly hard to get a seat to Japan. But, it should take less than a month to get your passport. I'd get the passport first and enter in all your information during your purchase experience. In in the US, it takes 5 minutes to get a photo at CVS pharmacy and fill out and mail the US Passport application (available at any post office or online). If you are weird and don't have a bank account or checking, you might have to buy a money order for it. Big deal though.
>>1251141
Friend wants me to book soon so I don't flake and I feel the same basically.
What should I do on my bicycle tour through mexico? I'll be entering from Laredo.
Should I get travel insurance going to Japan for two weeks from UK?
>>1250627
Less than that lasted me for a month, and that's including accommodation, flights and plenty of intercity travel.
You'll be absolutely fine. 15k yen a day per person is a lot of money, especially if it doesn't include the beds. Japan might not have an upper spending limit, but you're way above the minimum.

Is Esperanto actually any useful as a language?
I'm learning it because it's apparently one of the easiest languages to learn. I probably won't stop trying to learn it even if it's totally useless, but I just want to know.
>>1251561
It is absolutely and completely useless. You'd probably get more mileage out of Klingon.
In what advane is best to book flying tickets? I plan to go to Bangkok in Feb, right now the tickets are 530 eur. Or should I wait?
>>1251561
I actually had to google it to even know what that is. Wikipedia says it has between 0.5-1million speakers. That's nothing.
If you are good at english already go for spanish . It's easy as hell and the second or third most spoken language in the world. According to a spanish mate you can even communicate with italians and portoguese people more or less.
>>1251675
That's a tough question to answer.
It's certainly true that the longer you wait, the higher the prices.
But every now and then, some stupid fluke happens and the price decreases dramatically.
If it were me, I would buy the tickets now, as long as a refund or price protection is possible. Then if something lower comes along, I can refund the old ticket & buy the new one, or try to negotiate a price match for the ticket I already have.
If you only had 2-3 weeks to travel, and you wanted to travel to the Schengen Area in Europe, how would you plan it?

Anons I want to go to South America this year and don't know where to go. Right down I've nailed it down to Chile or Bolivia. Which one is better? Or should I go somewhere else south of the border?
Realistically how difficult would it be to go from say, Normandy in France to say, Vietnam travelling through each country on the way. I have about £30,000 in the bank (This is all my savings so I'd not like to spend all of it, but it's available if I need it).
I'm currently in the British army and have been for nearly 4 years now so I'm can deal with pretty shitty conditions and can comfortable live under a poncho just walking around with a 30kg bag on my back (can also drive everything from car to arctic truck/lorry), ideally I'd like to at least have a bit of security from the weather at least most of the time (hostels and shit)
I can take a gap year from the military to take the trip I'm just curious as to how difficult it actually would be for someone that can if worst come to worst could comfortably tramp it up for a bit. Has anyone ever undertook a trip that large before? Anyone done anything similar?
Opinions, advice, people telling me how retarded this is and how flawed it is all welcome.

Burger here. I only have experience traveling across the US so far, but I'm finally getting to the point in life where my finances are coming together. Regular out of country travel will be a real possibility within the next year or two. I've been doing a lot of reading on just about everything I can get my hands on to get ready.
From what I've been told, what I've read, and what I've experienced in person, though, people as a whole kind of suck. Are there any tips or tricks I can use to not let a handful of assholes ruin the experience?

I came to Japan for an entire semester on an exchange programme but I basically booked a single flight here due to some constraints regarding the timing of the study finishing.
How would I possibly find the cheapest flight back to AMS around a time between the 29th of july and the 10th of august? I'm in Osaka so my main choice of airport would be KIX but I'm open for any kind of detour and even staying a week or so in another region of Japan if it means a cheaper flight
(also what are the risks on booking a return flight and using it as a one way?)
I get standby flying on United airlines and I want to take advantage of it. Does anyone know any low demand routes? I like planes (autistic hobby, I know) so I recently flew on the 747 in business.
>>1250413
Will you have a car available?
The thing with Southern Portugal is public transport is sparse as the area isn't densely populated so you're a bit out of luck if you aren't driving. The best beaches are in more isolated places like Sagres and that's quite far from Faro where the airport and main rail station are.
Faro, Albufeira, Portimao and Lagos are the main cities in the Algarve and you can generally find good night life in all of those if you're there in summer. If you're arriving before July though you may find the places a bit dead.
Judging by your picture I assume you are more interested in nature tourism, if that's the case I strongly recommend going to Sagres and surrounding area. It is enclosed by a beautiful natural park and you can find all these secluded empty beaches scattered throughout the coast. As a general rule, the further west you go on the Algarve coast the more pleasant it becomes.
I am very tall and hate using wheeled luggage. I am looking for a medium-thin hard luggage case without wheels I can carry along with me.
I love to relax. To take my time in an area, enjoy the nice weather, fresh air, scenic walks, regional foods, and talking with friendly locals. What are some areas that I might enjoy visiting?
I'm flying to America this summer! I'm so excited about this. But this is just my second time flying and my first time flying alone. Aaaand I might've fucked up with the luggage.
So I'm looking at this screen where I have 2 flights. The upper one has the bag icon and it says I have checked baggage for that flight. However for the one below it doesn't say the same thing. How do I fix this? Which page do I need to go to? The one I bought my tickets in or the one which provides the flight?
>>1252171
Spain, South Italy
>>1252175
You should go to the page of the company you bought the ticket from.
Were the tickets sold separately or as a single flight? If they were bought as a single flight, it means your bag is already checked for both legs of the journey.
Regardless, you should confirm this at the check in desk in Stockholm.
>>1252145
It's called a rigid or semi-rigid backpack.
>>1252175
along the same lines as this question, if i'm doing an international flight, with one connection flight (detroit to philly to italy) on the same ticket same airline, will my bags need to be claimed and rechecked or will they just meet me in italy?
>>1252171
Southern France excluding Marseille
Italy
Southern Spain
>>1252264
>on the same ticket same airline
The bags will be checked through to the end. If not, they'll tell you when you drop the bags off in Detroit.

Yes it only costs probably like £20, i have year all round insurance though
How do things like Air Miles and Frequent Flyer Miles work?
I never gave a shit about them before because I used to fly very rarely. Now that I see myself flying a lot more often, I think it's time I start giving a shit. But I don't quite know where to start. I never really learned about this thing before.
>>1252614
It's very simple. When you book using your FF account, you get miles for those flights depending on the length, number of segments and other factors. Using the airlines website, you can then use 'book with miles' or something. Enter the trip you're interested in and you'll see how many miles that trip would cost.
Example: I got a round trip to LGW for 60k miles. Last week, I flew domestically and gained 1.4k miles.
>>1252614
So start by making an account with a big airline in your country. Do research on which global cabal they are a part of. That will be important because (I assume you're an Americunt) Southwest may be the cheapest domestic airline, but they don't have any international partners so you can't use their miles to go abroad. My parents made me an American account when I was 12, so I racked up tens of thousands of miles as a kid. So when you're booking flights, use kayak or whatever, but also the website of your FF airline. It may be a bit cheaper to fly Southwest, but consider if it's worth it to spend more and get miles by booking Delta or whatever.
>>1252623
I'm actually >a fucking leaf-cunt. Majority of my travels for the foreseeable future will be to Asia & Europe, however.
Is the Ariana Grande /trv/ anon alright?
I just read a headline, and thought of him.
Okay, maybe I'll read the actual news piece now.
>>1252644
Well AirMapleleaf will still have programs. The only thing is, if you don't make frequent (probably domestic or at least Can-US) flights, there isn't a big opportunity to get miles in the first place. On the other hand, you get more miles from longer flights, so if you find that Air Canada (or whatever) flies to Heathrow/Frankfurt/Nippon, fly that airline every time. It'll probably take over a dozen trips, but eventually you can get a *free* (you'll still have to pay maybe $150 in fees) transcontinental flight.
FF is ideal for people who travel frequently for business. The flight is paid for on the company card, but the individual gets the miles and can cash in big on personal travel.
>>1251910
they still have that weird thin border but all of the stupid exclaves were fixed
So I've been looking at overseas flights, and am wondering something. Hypothetical. cities can be replaced with any variable.
Let's say I want to fly to Beijing, from Chicago, itineraries are $2000, usually with a connection somewhere on the west coast.
I have found that I can book, like $500 cheaper if I do each leg separately, ORD > SFO (round trip), SFO > PEK (round trip).
Is there any reason why I should not do this, assuming I leave ample time for connections, and only have a carry-on??
How bad/good is WOW air, and why did they pick a name that sounds like a thinly-veiled scam?
Are vaccum bags worth it or are they a meme. Traveling for 4 weeks coming up and would like to not have too many bags while doing so.
>>1252721
A small addition: he doesn't have to fly the same airline, any flight with a SkyTeam member will get him the same miles he would get with AirCanada.
>>1252779
This isn't usually the case, but go for it...
Just make sure you have a good insurance, in case something goes terribly wrong with any first leg.
How difficult is it to get around in Japan? I know enough conversational Japanese to shop, ask for directions and grab a meal but I'm worried about getting lost at the stations and missing trains etc. by not being able to read the ticket or signs.
I was going to comiket but my friends cancelled on me and my vacation days are already set in stone for 3 weeks in august. My plan is to find a 1 or 2 week group tour with guide and then stay on my own for the rest of the time.
>>1253004
There is a good amount of things in english in japan, and most people know enough to help you get buy just buy asking them politely
>>1252779
If the tickets are unusually cheap, you will be top of the list to be kicked out if there's overbooking.
Airlines don't prioritize passengers based on how early they booked a ticket, but on how much they paid for it. If it is a busy domestic route with several flights a day, there is a very high likelihood the flight will be overbooked because most passengers would prefer to be put on the next flight rather than taking the compensation+hotel+meal and losing a whole day.
Due to certain circumstances of my visa, I had to book a one way to Osaka Japan (entered from KIX). However now I have to book a flight back at the end of July (so 29, 30 or 31 and maybe a few days into august)
The problem I'm running into is that the only flight from Japan to AMS that's kind of affordable is NGO-AMS with etihad (but even then it's still expensive)
My question is, can I somehow find cheaper flights by for example staying the night in a country in between my location and my destination, and if so is there a site I could use to find flights like that?
(And my second question being if anyone could of course find a cheaper flight from Japan to AMS on that date but I won't assume people will find my flights for me)

REALLY basic question here, forgive. Haven't been travelling in my life, last holiday was about 5 years ago when I was 7.
Besides a school trip to Germany on the coach, the last time I was outside the country (or even outside my city) was going to Turkey as a small child.
Just had my passport renewed and want to a bit of travelling, but I'm wondering how experienced do you have to be to get away with using just carry-on luggage?
Going by myself or with a friend, for a few days at most in European cities. I've got no qualms with wearing the same trousers a couple of days in a row, and you can always buy while you're there.
Wondering if an Adidas gym bag would be large enough, and then about sizes. Small is 50x25x23, which seems to fit with pretty much all airline requirements.

>My plan is to find a 1 or 2 week group tour with guide
For what porpoise
Japan is piss easy to travel in. Almost everything you would ever have to concern yourself with is either transcribed in Romaji or just in (broken to various degrees) English, especially warnings and train timetables/directions. I don't speak any Japanese beyond "b-b-baka", traveled by indirect local trains and highway buses and I had absolutely zero issues. The rail network is super dense, you can change trains for free and pretty much anything going in the vaguely correct direction will work. Missing trains is a non-issue. It's more like a nation-spanning subway than traditional rail in how it feels to use.
The only thing you need to worry about is catching the last train home - all public transport stops around midnight, so you could get stuck till 5 or so.

Nice try, little Timmy.
I'm currently planning a trip for next year, consisting of 5-6 nights in Japan and 4 nights in either Frankfurt or Hong Kong. I've been to Japan before, but never to Hong Kong or Germany, and having trouble deciding where to go.
Timeframe would be mid September or late October/early November.
Interests are mainly history and nature, so hiking, architecture from earlier eras, museums, and so forth. I'm not very social drinker, but I do like to try craft beer when traveling.
Tl;dr, Frankfurt or Hong Kong for an introvert history hiker who likes craft beer?
>>1251909
The practical parts are no problem, the start of your trip is through Europe which is easy tier. The major choices you'll have to make are which route you want to take. You can take several routes to get there, some of them with strict or weird visa requirements. An interesting trip would be down through the balkans, then Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, ferry over the Caspian, through the -stan countries, then China and either directly to Vietnam or through Nepal, India and south east Asia. Biggest issue will be those visas.
I'd say your trip is easily doable, even for someone as myself who's been out of the army for just over 10 years now. If you have a full year to spend you can actually do it extremely cheap and sleep and eat with locals if you're of the outward and sociable type.
I'd say fucking do it and share your experience with the world afterwards. Just make sure you plan the time you have in each country and check out visa requirements for each country you'll visit before you actually set out.
>>1253908
Why would you do Germany and Japan on the same trip with that little time? You'll lose a major chuck out of that one and a half week with the major travel and jetlag from traveling around the world.
Skip Germany and HK for this trip, spend the entire 1.5 weeks in Japan and visit Osaka/Kyoto instead while you do Tokyo. You'll get time to see much more and actually be awake enough to enjoy it.
>>1253405
In one trip I did Enthusiast, Pro, Veteran, Max Level, The Collector, Border Hunter, New Horizons, Seen It All, Lederhosen, Mountain Goat, Magellan, All-terrain, Time Traveler, Hemisphere Hopper, Daredevil, Imitator, The Consul Will Understand, What's Chinese for PETA?, Poseur, All Out, Kindness of Strangers, Cattle Class, Mercantile, Beer and Ramen, Cheap Ramen, Dumpster Diver, Victim, Has That Been Sterilized?, Making Friends, Lasting Friendship, Smooth Talker, Got a Light?, Local, Small World, Polyglot, Translator, Lone Wolf, I used to be an adventurer like you..., Terminal Velocity, Ramblin' Man, Seven-league Boots, Centurion, Level 20, Land, air, and sea, Thumps Up, Stunt Driver, Sparky, Cheese Steak Jimmy's, Infidel, Fuck the Police, Groupie, Conservationist, FFS, Incognito, Local Knowledge, and Fries with That?.
I also did X marks the spot, On the Road, Spiritual Enlightenment, and Mona Lisa Smile as a kid, but I probably won't make it to 69.

Was in Japan for 3 weeks in April and saw did the main tourist route along with some lesser-visited places. Not planning to city hop this time, just spend my time in one area that I didn't visit last time. Is it actually possible to do this while avoiding warzones/high-crime areas? Don't get me wrong, I totally understand why some people would be interested in these types of countries, and this list is intentionally designed for the adventurous type, but it would be interesting to know if a person with bland tastes can achieve this.
>>1253943
We should have a separate thread for this one day. It would be interesting to see what we come up with.
>>1254021
>but it would be interesting to know if a person with bland tastes can achieve this.
Sure, do entire, europe, the big Japan - SK - SEA to india trip, AUS, NZ, Canada, US are simple ones anyway, then it's down to south and central america (again completely safe if you don't go full retard), pick up some Caribbeans and the rest is picking up the easy africans (SA, Namibia, Botswana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Gabun, Congo, all that stuff that is clustered around the equator on the west or down south below DR Congo)
There's not one really sketchy place on the list, one you're more likely to get robbed, the other more likely to get scammed others I would advise against going out of the large centers... Who cares.
If you have a ok tier passport and some money do it like I do, play the drunk booking roulette on Thursday/Friday and just go to places, I'm atm in the air to Buenos Aires just because why not and a great steak is always worth it, last week it was Cyprus and the week before Valencia.
I'm flying to Europe with family for two weeks. I want to stay longer but I have to let them know how much longer soon so they can book the flights. I'm very interested in the outdoors and am interested in going to eastern-central Europe (Czech Rebulic, Slovakia, Hungary, etc.) for another 10 days once they leave.
What does /trv/ recommend?
I've already been to Salzburg/alpine lakes region near the Germany-Austria border.
Are there any Bhutanese tour operators that are based in Phuentsholing?
Reason I ask is that I do want to go to Bhutan, but instead of flying to Thimphu like most tourists, I want to take a bus/car/etc. because I already plan on going to India anyway.

>>1252171
This is definitely country-side Japan. Tohoku, Hokaido. Anything away from maddening Tokyo.
>>1253997
A lot of the costs are going to boil down to your social skills. I've been to many of the potential countries you might pass through, and the locals outside the major cities are usually very easy to talk to and most will be happy to lend you a bed for free or very low sums of money. If you hitch a ride between cities it's also possible to travel for almost no cost. Just note that in many countries it's expected that you pay a bit for gas. If you preffer hostels and guesthouses and take the cheap and frequent minibuses going everywhere you can easily sleep and travel for £10-£50 a day depending on country and time of year.
How much you want to see and experience along the way will influence costs a lot. If you want the trip that's easiest to do you can go through Russia, Mongolia and China and simply use train to cover the longer stretches between sights. A more interesting trip would be Balkans, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, SEA. Average salary in those countries is extremely low so you can easily travel in decent style for less than £20 a day.
>>1254163
You'll have to explain what you mean by checking-in, but no. Why would it be different?
>>1254239
>You'll have to explain what you mean by checking-in
He probably means checking in luggage with your airline, like you would with a large suitcase.
>Why would it be different?
A certain airport in a certain well-off middle-eastern country (I honestly can't remember, it had to have been Qatar or UAE) recently banned the check-in of non-rigid luggage. They will only accept standard suitcases and boxes; they will refuse backpacks, duffel bags, sacks, etc.
Has anyone here used Paypal to pay for a place on AirBNB? Which countries accept it?
does anyone know of a service where i can safely store my luggage for a month while i travel around in London?
How far in advance is usually optimal for booking a flight? Canada to Europe (ideally UK but I'm not picky), if it matters.

As early as possible. The less desperate you are, the cheaper it gets.
Don't be that guy who books a flight literally a week before Christmas.
Best camera for traveling? I hate my phone camera and I want some nice shots. I don't want to carry anything big or very fragile though.
Im spending 2-3 weeks in New York starting next month. Where could I find affordable place to stay?
>>1254532
There's a bunch of good cameras classified as "compacts with superzoom" that will fit in your pocket but still have a 25x or even up to 40x optical zoom. Canon make some affordable ones under the Powershot range and Nikon and Panasonic make some even better ones if you want to spend the money. Have a look at the review sites and make some comparisons depending on what you want to spend.
>>1254532
A very common recommendation in /trv/ and /p/ is the Sony A6000.
>better than a phone camera

>almost as easy as using a P&S
>not as versatile as a DSLR, but does have a few swappable lenses if you're into that kind of thing

I left the US on my Euro passport because I lost my American shortly before and it hadn't came in at that point. I just figure that nations would share this kind of data with each other.

It always depends on what you want. You usually look for
-Close to airport
-cheap but okay quality

However, when I was biking through Europe, when I flew into Dublin I actually looked for hotels on the edge of the city so I could leave safely in the early morning and get ahead.
Always look for reviews, and don't pick the absolute cheapest since you don't want to get bed bugs or whatever parasites and shit on you.
>>1254981
>Close to airport
Wut, no. The opposite. Airports are usually in boring locations. Plus can bring serious noise.
People generally look for a hotel as centrally located as possible within their budget.
Should I be worried about anything flying from LAX to Paris? I am scared of flying and 10 hours seems like an eternity
Also, I really hope the Paris memes aren't as bad as pol or whatever makes it to be. I'm going to be spending most of my time in Lyon but I will spend a week in Paris as well

Paris is good, don't spend all your time around gar during Nord but go to area around Odeon. Lovely place. Go to buttes Chaumont to escape the crowds. Go to chez gladines for south west style food. Go to musee d'Orsay and avoid the Louvre.
Most people who visit Paris are morons who don't know what they are doing so they end up hanging out at the touristy places full of niggers and gypsy. If you can't enjoy Paris you only have yourself to blame

I know the line outside attracts those who prey on tourists, but once inside it is a world-class museum that anybody who is interested in Art History should see.
Though I can understand skipping the room with the Mona Lisa when the tour groups are going through.

It's cool but I prefer other museums. The problem is that it's rediculously huge and it's easy to be overwhelmed. You can spend hours wandering around the damn place. I honestly think that musee d'Orsay has better paintings and a nicer layout to boot.
If you a want to go, Go the French 18/19th century stuff to avoid the crowds and still see top tier art. The Dutch section is small but decently curated (frans Hal's is the boss) and the room full of Rubens is amazing. The near East antiquity section is great (assyran columns!) and the French large scale paintings such as the raft of the Medusa are cool.
Anyway, rambling aside, there are some good paintings and antiques there but for me it isn't a very pleasant museum experience.
Another good museum is the musee Rodin.

Cheers for the help, realistically though I wouldn't say I had poor social skills (What squaddie does?) but being able to talk yourself into staying at a total strangers house with all your kit? I mean how many people would actually be happy bringing some random bloke with a bergan full of kit into their house to sleep for a night or two? Only way I can see myself getting into someones house is if maybe they're also travelers of some sort and I offer to pay them or if I go on a night out and end up pulling but even then I'd need somewhere to stash all my stuff so I'd need my own place anyway.
How many people here have actually talked their way into some random persons home? Seems unlikely to me.
Should I use a airbnb or a regular cheap hotel?
I'm gonna be in the Netherlands for about a week on my own before attending school there for two weeks, before that I'll be staying with a friend in Belgium. Only time I've been overseas alone was when I was in Japan alone for a day after sending my friend home and it was depressing as fuck with no one to talk to, I was thinkin a airbbn host could tell me more about the place and introduce me to stuff.

You could get lucky with your AirBnB host (depending on where you go, they'll just be akin to a receptionist), or you could go to a hostel. Always people there.

Book online, or better yet buy the Paris museum pass, so you don't have to wait in line at all. I got there first thing on a rainy morning a few months back, walked right in past hundreds of people lined up waiting for tickets because I had the museum pass, and got to look at the antiquities section when it was almost empty.

You will have to go through immigration when you leave the airport, so if you need a visa, forget it. I've scheduled a bunch of intercontinental flights with long layovers at London Heathrow and I've had no problem leaving for the day and coming back. Just be aware that getting through immigration can take sometimes take a long time.

Become self employed
It can be difficult at times but in terms of control over your own life it reaps dividends. It becomes a case of you can do something if you can do something, rather than you can do something if someone says so.
>>1256679
But it totally depends on what you are self-employed doing. Rarely does "self-employed" t mean digital nomad or fat cat living a life of leisure of corporate profits.
Self-employed people usually have trouble separating their work from their private and leisure time, and if you decide to take it easy and give yourself a month's vacation to go barebacking across SE Asia when you feel the urge, you will be cheating yourself.
Self-employed people typically work longer hours than salaried wage slaves, especially in the early days of a business.
>>1256679
I'm an engineer, at the very least I need to wageslave for 4 years to get licensed before I can even legally be self-employed. And I would need much more experience than that before anybody would want me as a consultant anyway.
Also all the self-employed people I know work like crazy unless they're just bullshit """self-employed"""
A flight I've been watching suddenly went from $1500 to $600ish. Before I go all in, what makes this discount happen and whats my window for snatching that price?
I feel like I'm about to make some kind of Faustian bargain.
>>1256989
There isn't always a rhyme or reason as to why it happens. Any reason you can think of is plausible.
>disgruntled employee on his last day fucking around with the prices
>confusion between different types of currencies
>employee making a typo somewhere
>computer glitch
>programming bug
>special sale
>etc.
In these scenarios, prices are usually honored. The only time they don't are when it's too cheap (like a $7 flight or some other stupidly low number).
There's also these scenarios:
>price-finding sites interpreting prices one way
>booking sites interpreting prices another way
I've actually had this happen to me. I saw the exact same flight (airlines, layovers, times, etc.) at slightly different prices. Obviously, I picked the lower one. Turns out the site I was actually booking with doesn't include taxes, and the price-finder didn't pick up on that. So with taxes, I actually ended up paying the exact amount as the higher of the other quoted price (because the other booking sites included the taxes).

>is $1.500 a good budget for the whole trip?(without the plane ticket of course)
Yes, it's a lot. You can live decently with that. If you'll be staying on your online friends' couches, you've probably got more money than you can spend.
>cities or major sites to avoid
No idea, I'm not up to date on German shitholes.
>i have several friends from the internet around the country, would it be too strange to ask to stay with them for a few days? i have known most of them for over a year
That's a question only you can answer. Depends on how close you are with them and their personalities.
>>1257061

>No idea, I'm not up to date on German shitholes.

>>1257064
>where to find cheaper prices?
Read the sticky, there's a list of flight search engines. The key is being flexible, if you're dead set on leaving in the evening of the 5th of September, you'll have a hard time finding a good price.
>or rather what is more realistic?
Something around $500-600 should be ok, but you'd probably do better with an answer from an American. I'm on the other side of the ocean and I find flights for around ~$300 to the East Coast regularly, though that would obviously require flexibility, both with the city of origin and dates.
>well what if i don't stay with them and stay out of 3 star hotels? would that still be enough to eat well and afford train tickets and taxi fares?
numbeo.com. Check some hotels on booking sites and Deutsche Bahn's price list and do the math for a fairly accurate figure. Generally it's hard to estimate costs for other people since everyone has different expectations - my cheapskate's definition of "eating well" is probably very different from yours and I'd only ever use a taxi in an emergency. By my needs, your budget would be more than enough.

>Are the city-run taxis in Mexico City better than Uber? Main concerns are safety and the likelihood of getting scammed.
They have meters, so do two things, already know the price upfront and then ask the price, and once agreed upon, watch them slap that meter into the on position. They don't give a shit about the quality of your ride, and they're known to have horribly maintained suspension. You'll feel every pothole.
Ubers are fine, but drivers see you as well as you seeing them. It's better to have a local call the car for you.
I would trust a quality hotel vetted driver the most. Talk to your concierge, or simply walk into a better hotel and talk to that concierge. They're liaisons for their better friends, with decent cars who will accept a payment. Good hotel cars are like tour guides not just drivers and can actually make or break the enjoyment of your trip, especially out to the pyramids.

>I get standby flying on United airlines and I want to take advantage of it. Does anyone know any low demand routes? I like planes (autistic hobby, I know) so I recently flew on the 747 in business.
Low demand routes? They won't run them. The earlier most annoying flight of the morning, like 5am, is a safe bet that people who booked simply didn't get out of bed in time. Avoid connections, cause the standby passenger can get stuck in them. Nonstop ideally.

>I am very tall and hate using wheeled luggage. I am looking for a medium-thin hard luggage case without wheels I can carry along with me.
Use a brand like Travelpro that has extra long retractable handles. Also, a bag that doesn't tilt, a 4 wheel bag, will save your back, neck and shoulders.
I prefer soft-side, which is rigid anyway, but has more useful organization. If you travel places you worry about that level of security, where people slip things into your bags, then by all means go hardside. But, clamshell opened bags require a big space, typically a floor or bed to open. It's nicer to set a bag on a dresser and at least have the option to live out of it without much more than flipping up the lid.

Pienso que tradujiste esto en Google Translate, es un poquito difÃcil entender. PodrÃas escribir en español?
I'm traveling with hand luggage only and there's a 7kg limit. My hand luggage suitcase is 2.7kg, and my clothing is going to be about 3.1kg and my shoes are 0.9kg. So that's 6.7kg. Add a small towel and it's 6.9kg
So it is possible to do this (I just have to find a way to fit in slippers for the filthy hostel bathrooms) as long as I manage to put my toiletries + electronics in a man purse :^)
I'm still a bit annoyed that this is really close to the limit though, because there's no room for any silly souvenirs or anything.
I worry that a backpack is annoying to pack and unpack and fitting shoes inside might be an issue.
I'm going away for a week. Should I just ditch the pair of jeans in the suitcase? Stuff underwear in my man purse? I don't really feel like spending money on a suitcase that's one kg lighter...
Any tricks? I already looked at removing the heavy parts of the suitcase but removing them would be extremely painful...
>>1258001
What some travelers do is they wear their clothing in several layers to conserve weight. So wear your shirt on top of your shirt on top of your shirt, and put on a jacket.
More advice I can give you:
>don't pack toiletries, buy them at your destination (this also eliminates the hassle with liquids)
>if you're packing anything that comes in a case, box or a glass bottle, try re-packaging them in thin plastic bags/bottles instead
>consider taking a backpack with you instead of a hardcase (they're lighter and more flexible)
>>1258008
thanks for the tips.
I feel like a backpack would be annoying with the 20cm thickness requirement though (which seems so silly because the shelve things are always much bigger than the requirement). And if I bring a nice shirt it would definitely get fucked up from being in a weak backpack...
I did find this tho:
in addition to main hand baggage the following items can be carried in the aircraft cabin which the passenger did not place into the hand baggage and has them at hand:
1 handbag or purse;
paper folder;
printed reading material to be used during the flight;
baby food to be used during the flight;
1 umbrella or walking stick;
1 overcoat;
1 small camera or binoculars;
1 personal laptop;
1 pair of crutches;
airplane baby bassinet (for an infant up to 1 year of age).
The total weight of these items shall not exceed 5 kg.
It's so fucking annoying that I can't just move some of those 5kgs into my hand baggage. Is Ukraine Airlines International the only one with these retarded requirements?
>>1257214
Talking to other backpackers is basically the easiest thing in the world. Almost everyone you meet with be in the same situation, they are all traveling. So ask where they are from, where have they been, where are they going next, must see places if they have been in the city longer than you. Those are just the basic questions. Then you can eventually get into why are they traveling, what do they do for work/school, shit like that.
If you're a person with English as their first language you can start talking to other English speakers simply because they are speaking English. Most backpackers understand and will typically have a conversation with you.
From there just go with it, if both parties enjoy each others company then ask if they want to find a good place to get local food. Or see if they want to go to a museum or sightseeing. I personally find it a lot easier than talking to random people back home in a bar or something like that.
>>1258021
This guy knows what's up. It's not even that weird to ask people to go get something to eat with you around dinner time. Everyone is basically in the same situation. Other people who are also traveling alone will probably like doing things like eating, walking through a city etc. together. Most people will love to tell you about their experiences and you will probably also like to tell people stuff (which can also help them).

Might be a better question for the japan general but here it goes.
Going to japan in July, I fly a lot never had an issue with anything but never flown OUT of the country. My question is how long does customs take and what are some expirences you've had.
Just planning on bringing back some shirts, trinkets, maybe a manga(or doujin) or two of an anime I like. Nothing that I really wouldn't be too being seen by customs, nothing certainly like "my little sister can't be this slutty, can she?!?!?".
Hear stories of people getting shit on by customs coming back from japan about entering the us. Things roughled about shit broken, etc. Might just be paranoid about it all but eh thought there wasn't any harm in asking.

a language isn't just a way to communicate ideas with others, it's how you interface with another cultural and way of living. if you learn esperanto you gain the ability to interface with a couple nerds whose culture entails meeting periodically at event centers to feel pretentious

Anyone flew with their bikes before without a proper carrier?
It's just going to be a one-off for me... Wondering if it's possible to avoid having to wrap it in a box, and just wrap it in large trash bags/some other light wrapper?
thinking about cancelling my gym membership for a while and focus on cardio/bodyweight stuff
i'm 6'1 223 pounds and i've hit a wall with SS and ive deloaded several times already and can't progress anymore.
My goal weight is about 190-200 currently so I figured it would be more beneficial to just focus on losing the rest of the fat with cardio.
Is this a mistake? Or could I do a split or something to start filling the inevitable loose skin? Can I even make any real gains while eating at a deficit? Thanks in advance for reply.

I have a flight that's 17:45 NY time departure and 7:15 Spain time arrival. I'd normally fall asleep about an hour before arrival, so what's the best way to make sure I get some sleep on the plane? Is it a good idea to get very little sleep the night before the flight?
Im interested in backpacking in europe. whats the rundown on costs and shit in hostels how long should a trip ideally take if i have 10000 aud
>>1251882
Not a bad choice, however it can get a bit boring/tedious on the long drives between cities, assuming you go the primary highways. You'll get to see a bunch of nice little places and towns though.
>>1258380
That's a fuckton of money for EE.
>>1258380
You should be able, from what I hear a lot of those countries are relatively cheap. Try booking hostels in advance though to get a rough idea of cost, you can always cancel.
Where are you from?
>>1258595
Booked a good few hostels for my first trip recently. average is about 20-25 a night. Thats in the more expensive parts mainly so some of the eastern cities probably cheaper
>>1258595
Depends where you go, but it should last you about 2 months of living comfortable

Similar question; Ill be in the north of Portugal in july, do you lads know of anything thats really worth visiting there?
Also, how viable is travelling from a village in eastern Portugal to a village in western Spain (roughly 100km apart), are buses an option or am I fucked?
>>1258704
It depends what you're interested in. You can go south and party with drunk British slags on package tours or visit an old crusader castle in Tomar, north of Lisbon, or visit the wine region in the Duoro Valley. If you're interested in history and culture Braga is a good day trip, the Bom Jesus is an interesting site to see, and so is Guimarães. Porto you can happily spend two or three days just walking around.

Is Las Vegas/Nevada still worth going to if you're not into gambling or prostitutes?

There's a whole lot of shows at the casinos, but you need pretty popular tastes, I think. In any case it is a sight to see, including flying in and seeing the lights in the middle of the desert. You can get a good hotel room cheap, if nothing major is happening in the city, and you can always do the regular American relaxing activities like gorging on buffets and shopping.
>TL;DR: Passport control from Bularus to Ukraine by car.
Two days ago at work they decided we needed to go form The Netherlands to Ukraine by car with a small crew. Everyone has a passport except me. I thought a European ID card would suffice but we need a passport.
It's already too late for me to request a fast passport at the government. I'm not sure if I'm willing to risk going there with just an ID card.
Do they check at the border if you have a passport?
What are the penalties if you don't have a passport besides you needing to leave the country?

well, I recomend just going with a bankcard in both countries, no need for cash realy, and the small you get out in cash you can spend on the borders (or taxfree boats) buy alcohol in denmark and snus in sweden, cary sig from outside (depends where you are from ofc)

I plan on spending at least 4 weeks in Vietnam, traveling from north to south including rural areas. How important is it to get certain vaccinations and boosters before I go? I know most doctors would recommend it, and I'll definately get them if its necessary, but I fucking hate them.
How exactly does one plan a vacation?
Deciding where you want to go seems simple enough but how do you figure out the details? What site do you buy the plane ticket on? How do you decide what city you'll go to and what to do in that city? How to get around and where to stay?
Do you have to plan it all out in advance or can you just buy a one way ticket to wherever and just "wing it"
>>1259862
>Do you have to plan it all out in advance or can you just buy a one way ticket to wherever and just "wing it
You can wing it and there are those here who would say its much better than to planning every detail
As to how to plan, first set yourself dates you wanna leave and come back on, then set a rough budget on how much you can realistically spend.
After that its really up to you, decide what countries/cities you wanna see and then look at the easiest way to get between them and fit them all in in the time youve allotted. I found actually writing on a calander the easiest way to keep track of time when planning.
as to
>What site do you buy the plane ticket on
I use skyscanner and kayak to check deals then book directly from the airline
Booking.com is a good place for booking hotels/hostels and alot of the time you can book and cancel for free

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to sneak into a hostel over night which my friends were staying at. There was a key code that they knew to let me in. There was no one at reception because we didn't get in till late so I couldn't book a bed. I'm awkwardly sat in the common room for now but how are these places if I explain the story to them? Will they try to charge me extra for sneaking in? Can my friends get in trouble? Should I sneak out before someone shows up?

Hitchhiking is fairly common, but definitely not in the north east. Megabus is probably cheaper than any carpool situation. Can be as cheap as 10 to 20 for an all day drive, plus you get comfy seat, power, bathroom, stretch stops.
What areas do you want to see?
Easiest place to get laid for a single guy in his twenties 5-6/10.
Don't wanna pay for sex

Don't even consider. The prices are ridiculous like 100 pounds for a one hour long ride. Only bus.

In the US, are "eco-friendly" hotels legit or a cheap excuse not to give you fresh towels every day? The hotel stay for a weekend would have been $600
Hey /trv/. Making preliminary plans to visit Italy (specifically Rome) with my GF in December. We've never been anywhere in Europe before. Couple of quick questions.
1. Is 5-6 days in just Rome overkill/should we go somewhere outside of Rome? If so where do you think?
2. Flight cost excluded, what would roughly be a good amount of money to think about bringing?
Thanks!!
>>1260964
It depends on what you want to do. If you're interested in history and culture then 5-6 days is not going to be too much at all. The Vatican museum can easily take up a full day, for example. Go to Ostia if you want to get out of the city. Look at the Rome entry on the website Numbeo to see the cost of living.
>>1260492
I'll definitely look into Megabus. Thanks for that
I don't really have any particular locations in mind, just want to see the states. But if I would say something interesting in the area it would be the state forests. Plus other bigger places like Washington, Chicago etc. I really don't have anything definite.
>>1260993
Chicago is a good bet. I'd say get down to New Orleans so you can see a radically different part of America, but I understand that's a big drive. If you like nature, you should really find a way to stretch yourself to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, those kind of states. Will take all your breath away and you'll suffocate a painful beautiful death.
>>1260933
Dude, the only difference I can think between an eco hotel and regular hotel would be the way they wash the towels and the type of lightbulbs they use. Just go to a regular hotel and only use 1 towel and only use 1 light.
I'm a German national, insured under a public health care provider at home and I'm going to the US(NY) for about 2 weeks. I'm a bit scared about the whole healthcare thing(never been to a country without universal coverage before), buying a private travel insurance and health insurance abroad in general.
I already have a basic private travel insurance that is like a reimbursement if I understand it correctly.
So if something happens, will I get treated, get a bill and then phone my provider to reimburse the costs or will I expected to pay for everything out of my pocket (or otherwise denied treatment) and then go to my insurer to get the money back?
>>1261118
Depends on your insurer.

I've only ever used a debit card to pay through the Airbnb system, but if the airbnb system itself accepts it, why not? The main thing is not to pay for an Airbnb rental outside the website and the system itself, unless you know the person (e.g. informally extending your stay). That's how you get scammed. All the money goes through Airbnb, because they take a significant cut, so there's no reason why an individual host could reject paypal.
I'm going to Tbilisi in two weeks and I'm looking for the honest and simple bars that aren't written about on Tripadvisor that only old local men would know.

What are some good 1-week destinations?
More specifically, places you can visit for roughly 7 days (maybe more, maybe less), and either see most of the culture, or at least be reasonably satisfied.
Something other than Hong Kong, please. I actually really like HK, don't get me wrong, but not only have I already been there, it's also the most common suggestion (and even then, I beg to differ; I think 2-3 weeks is more ideal for HK).
